corn prices have put more optimism in

June 13
Comments: Monday’s regular cattle
sale featured a good run of cows and a
light mix of feeders, with an extremely
strong cow market. Slaughter cows
topped out at $1.09 per pound, a high
we haven’t seen in many years, and cows
averaged 92 cents per pound. Strong
demand leading up to the 4th of July
holiday along with higher demand for
hamburger due to increased prices of
steaks seems to be pushing prices up
for cull cows. I expect prices to remain
strong up to the week before the 4th
before settling back a bit. Slaughter bulls
were also higher, up to $1.23, though
could have been up to 10 cents more on
higher yielding bulls. Not enough feeder
cattle for a good market test, though
there was strong demand for smaller
1-3 head lots for pasture cattle. A good
group of black 650 pound heifers sold
for $1.40.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
June 23
California milk production is steady to
slightly higher when compared to last
week, but down year over year. Con-
tacts say post-peak flush milk volumes
are still plentiful. In-state demand is
surpassed by supply, and some milk
spot loads are moving out of state.
Class I demand is level. Class II and III
orders are steadily strong, with some
dairy processing plants operating at or
near capacity.
Milk flows in Arizona continue to
decline. Class I sales are lower; some
bottling plants are reducing milk orders
due to plant downtime and lower food
service demand. These cuts are freeing
up milk for balancing operations,
enabling some dairy processors to meet
production needs without having to
bring in milk from other states. Milk
demands are steady to stronger for all
other Classes.
New Mexico’s milk output is waning
in the dry summer heat. Bottling sales
are stable. Class II demand is steady to
higher, and contacts say production is
steady, but not stressed, for balancing
operations.
In the Pacific Northwest, milk produc-
tion is level to slightly increasing. Class
I demand is firm. Cheesemaking is very
active, keeping Class III sales elevated.
Although some parts of Oregon are
experiencing drought conditions, recent
reports indicate other areas of the state
have received over 40 inches of rain
so far this year. Soggy fields, resulting
from heavier than average precipita-
tion, are causing some delays for dairy
farmers trying to plant corn and harvest
forages.
Farm level milk output is flat through-
out the mountain states of Idaho, Utah
and Colorado. Bottling sales are steady.
Demand is unchanged for all other
Classes. Demand for condensed skim
remains firm. Loads are available to sat-
isfy contract and spot needs. Some end
users are purchasing additional spot
loads on top of contracted loads.
Cream demand is fairly steady across
the West, but spot availability varies.
In the heat of the Southwest, cream
is tight and some contacts report
limited spot load offers. Farther north,
market participants say cream is more
available, but high freight costs and
limited truck/driver availability hamper
its movement in some cases. Ice cream
manufacturing is seasonally active.
Western cream multiples are holding
firm on the bottom of the range this
week, but the top of the range inched
higher.

214,500
Compared to last week, steers and
heifers sold 2.00 to 5.00 higher. The
supply of feeders was light to moderate.
Heat continued to impact market
receipts, although this is typical as
this is generally the slower time of the
year for marketing. There will be a few
special sales over the next few weeks
as barns hold special yearling sales for
backgrounders that retain ownership to
this point or put together loads of cattle
to make some heavier weight yearlings
to hit the market specifically at this time
knowing supplies are light.
Demand for yearlings is good, calf
demand depends hugely on condition
and health risk. Perhaps not as extreme
as it is when the fall temperature swings
occur, but extreme heat is also a huge
risk to cattle and not conducive to easy
weight gain.
Cattle on Feed Report was released
Friday afternoon with On Feed at 102
percent; Placements at 98 percent.
Marketings were 102 percent.
The June 1 On Feed number is the
largest since the series started in 1996
and the fifth month in a row with the
largest on feed for the data series.
Negotiated cash fed cattle trade in
the Nebraska continues to be at the
forefront of the market with the bulk of
live sales trading steady to 3.00 higher
at 145.00 to 150.00, while the dressed
sales there were 4.00 higher at 234.00.
Live sales in the Southern Plains were
reported at mostly 137.00 unevenly
steady to 3.00 lower than the previous
week.
Boxed-beef prices leveled off some-
what this week. Choice boxed beef
closed the week 1.28 lower at 264.98,
while Select was 1.51 lower at 245.02
for the same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal
inspection estimated at 666K for the
week, 1K less than last week and 6K
more than a year ago. Auction volume
this week included 50 percent weighing
over 600 lbs and 43 percent heifers.
