Receipts: 1297 HD total, 652 HD cattle,
490 sheep, 155 goats
Comments: The feeder cattle were
steady with good farmer interest on the
800 lbs and up cattle. Limited number of
weaned and vaccinated calves this week.
We are moving into the season of bawling
fall calves. The cow market took a hit this
week off $5-10. Looks like big numbers
coming to town have the plants backed
up. They went from being short bought
to having them in pens everywhere. The
high prices just brought a lot of cows to
town. The best of the light lambs sold in
excess of 3.00 a pound with heavy lambs
taking a downturn again.

April 25
Comments: Monday’s regular cattle
sale featured over 500 head of cattle,
with a large offering of cull cows, bulls,
and pairs. Slaughter cows were steady to
lower on average, mostly due to a higher
number of thinner, lower yielding cows
than in previous weeks. Cows topped out
at 98 cents per pound, with an average
of 80-90 cents per pound depending on
weight. Slaughter bulls were similar to
the cow market, slightly lower on aver-
age. Bulls topped out at $1.13, and aver-
aged $1.03-$1.07. Cow calf pairs brought
$1100-$1500, though bigger cows with
calves over 200 pounds brought higher
split. Feeder cattle were lower, though
the difference in quality compared to last
week’s feeder sale was considerable.

Dairy Report

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
April 28
In California milk production is steady
to higher. Contacts report that while
volumes are up over the previous weeks,
they remain below production levels this
time last year. Some processors in the state
are, reportedly, unable to utilize additional
volumes of available milk, due to labor
shortages.
Some processors in the state report that
nearby states, with lighter milk production,
are looking for loads to meet current
market demands. Shortages of available
tankers and truck drivers are limiting the
ability of some processors from fulfilling
these out of state orders. Demand is steady
across all Classes.
Warmer weather in Arizona caused milk
production to decline this week. Milk
output is, reportedly, down year over year.
Processing plants in the region are pulling
in volumes of milk from other nearby
states. Demand for Class I and II is steady.
Milk production in New Mexico is steady
this week, though some producers in
the area say that overall output is down
year over year. Some additional loads of
milk have become available in the state
due to unplanned down time. Processors
report that they can relocate these loads
to nearby balancing operations, and some
say they have moved loads to nearby
states with tighter milk availability. Class II
demand is steady, while Class I demand is
trending higher.
Farm level milk production is increasing
in the Pacific Northwest. Contacts say that
improving weather in the area is increasing
cow comfort. Milk is available, allowing
processing facilities to run busy schedules.
Demand for Class I and III is steady.
In the mountain states of Idaho, Utah
and Colorado milk production is trending
higher. Labor shortages in the area are, re-
portedly, contributing to some unplanned
downtime at plants in the area. Milk loads
are plentiful in the area, and loads are
being actively sold on the spot market.
Stakeholders say that loads are currently
being sold from $3 to $5 under Class IV.
Stakeholders say that they are moving
loads of milk to areas with tighter supplies.
Across all Classes, demand is steady.
Condensed skim contracts are steady
in the West. Stakeholders say that overall
demand for condensed skim has been
strong for the last few weeks. Demand
for cream is steady. Ice cream and butter
makers are running active schedules and
pulling at regional supplies. Some pur-
chasers from other regions are, reportedly,
looking to the West for supplies to meet
current production needs. Stakeholders say
that limited tanker availability is causing
them to focus their cream sales on local
customers.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers
sold steady to 3.00 lower nationwide. Demand
was moderate throughout the country as the
CME Cattle Complex had significant weakness
all week long and cattle buyers were more
cognizant of price this week as cost of gains
have increased this winter and spring.
Fall born calves are making their way to
market this time of year, and Year-to-Date
auction receipts on this report are near 100K
under a year ago.
If the cow sell-off started last year, less
calves would be expected for this fall as well
and the receipt disparity between last year
and this year will continue to widen.
For the week, May through October Feeder
Cattle futures were 7.400 to 8.625 lower. This
sent a substantial message after the bearish
Cattle on Feed from the previous week. The
Live Cattle contracts were affected as well with
the June and August futures 5.775 and 5.100
lower for the week, respectively.
There were 107 total loads tendered for the
month of April with all of those being in the
Texas Panhandle area.
The cash fed cattle trade was steady this
week at 140.00 in the Southern Plains, howev-
er the Nebraska dressed trade was mostly 2.00
higher at 232.00.
Recent rains across a drought-plagued
nation have given some optimism to be able
to turn cattle out on grass this week. Even
though temperatures have been lower than
normal for this time, farmers are working
against the calendar to get corn and soybeans
in the ground to maximize yield. Just a little
extra boost in yield this year will help the bot-
tom line if rains come timely. Hopefully there
is enough moisture in places to get a crop up
out of the ground and running to a profit.
Boxed Beef prices have struggled in recent
weeks after Choice topped around 273.00 in
early to mid-April. Choice boxed beef closed
the week 7.13 lower at 260.78, while Select
was 10.93 lower at 247.97 for the same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal inspec-
tion estimated at 656K for the week, 9K less
than last week and 3K more than a year ago.
Auction volume this week included 54
percent weighing over 600 lbs and 46 percent
heifers.
