Comments: Monday9s regular cattle
sale featured near 300 head, with a good
run of cows, pairs and older bred cows.
Slaughter cows were steady to higher,
with the best of the cows bringing 96.50
cents per pound, and an average price of
87-89 cents per pound. Most pairs were
split, with a strong cull market and baby
calf market making them dollar out high-
er separately. Younger, lighter cow calf
pairs brought $1350-$1425. Bred cows,
mostly heifers or 2-3-year-olds weighing
1100-1300, brought between $1100 and
$1400 per head. Not enough of any one
class of feeder cattle for a true market
test, though there was good farmer
demand for grass calves.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
April 14
California milk production is steady, following
seasonal trends. The California Crop Progress
report from NASS for April 11, 2022, relays that
wheat and alfalfa are doing well, while alfalfa
crops are being cut and baled in the state.
Some stakeholders report that tanker
availability is tight and that they are having
some dioculty onding trucks to move loads
of milk out of state. Labor shortages and some
unplanned downtime are causing some produc-
tion facilities to sell milk at a discount. Demand is
steady across all Classes.
Warmer weather in Arizona has contributed
to a decline in milk production this week. Some
plant managers report that they are pulling in
milk from out of state to fuloll local production
demand. Stakeholders say that high transpor-
tation costs are limiting their ability to purchase
afordable loads of milk from other states. The
April 11, 2022, Arizona Crop Progress report from
NASS showed that harvest is taking place on
over three-quarters of alfalfa-producing acreage.
Demand for Class III is strengthening, while Class
I demand is steady.
Milk production in New Mexico is steady;
some contacts believe that production may be
approaching its seasonal peak. Milk is available
in the state to meet current production needs.
Some producers report that they are sending
loads to nearby states and other regions with
tighter milk availability. Class I demand is steady
to higher, while Class II demand is steady.
Milk production in the Pacioc Northwest, is
steady to higher this week. Contacts report that
milk production is nat compared to last year.
Class I demand is trending higher as educational
institutions in the area have reconvened follow-
ing spring break. Demand for Class II and Class
III are steady.
Warmer weather in the mountain states of
Idaho, Utah and Colorado is contributing to
increased farm level milk production. Spot milk
continues to be available for producers in the
area. Contacts report that some purchasers in
other parts of the West are interested in pur-
chasing available milk supplies, but a shortage
of tankers is limiting the ability to move larger
volumes of milk farther away. Labor shortages
are causing some plant managers to run below
capacity in the area.
Across all Classes demand is steady. Contracts
for condensed skim are steady in the West.
Contacts report that condensed skim is available,
but that available tankers are limited, making it
diocult for sellers to move loads.
Demand for cream is strong in the region.
Cream cheese and ice cream producers are
purchasing loads of cream as they ramp up
production in preparation for warmer weather.
Butter makers are also busy utilizing cream to
build inventories. Spot purchasers say that cream
loads are available. Some purchasers from other
regions, where cream inventories are tighter,
are looking to the West to meet current market
demands.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers
sold steady to 3.00 lower except for the heifers
in the South-Central region being orm to 3.00
higher. Demand was reported as moderate to
good, with the best demand on the greener
kind that will maximize compensatory gain in
the feedyard or on grass.
The South-Central region steer-heifer spread
had ballooned on their 5-weight heifers to
over 30.00 in recent weeks and buyers realized
that the lighter weight heifers needed to
get back in line with where that spread is
historically. Last spring the highest 5-weight
steer-to-heifer spread was 25.25, while this
year topped 30.00 on two occasions and has
been 28.59 for the last eight weeks.
There was some moisture received this week
in areas that very dearly needed it. But more
is needed, which is keeping some pressure on
the light cattle market that could run on grass
as yearlings. In the Northern Plains, the Easter
holiday and blizzard conditions hampered re-
ceipts. With the Dakotas in the heart of calving
season, temperatures are normally in the 40s
and 50s; however, single digit low temps were
normal for several days this week. Couple that
with 50 mph winds and inches upon inches of
snow that brought hazardous and treacherous
conditions in their area.
No doubt that the recent drought has taken
a toll on the psyche of ranchers in the afected
area. However, if they don9t have but a portion
of their calf crop to sell in the fall, it could be
hard times ahead as replacement cattle be-
come more expensive in the near future, when
cow herd contraction is in full swing.
Negotiated live trading of fed cattle in the
Southern Plains sold 1.00 to 2.00 higher from
the previous week at 139.00, while dressed
sales in Nebraska sold 3.00 to 5.00 higher at
225.00 to 227.00. Choice boxed beef closed
the week 2.15 higher at 272.62, while Select
was 1.43 lower at 258.90 for the same period.
Weekly cattle slaughter under federal in-
spection estimated at 634K for the week, 37K
less than last week and 7K less than a year ago.
Auction volume this week included 52 percent
weighing over 600 lbs and 45 percent heifers.
