well tested. At San Angelo, TX 8,618 head sold.

Video sold 3,000 feeder lambs in Arizona,
1465 feeder lambs in California and 30 rams in
California. In direct trading slaughter ewes and

Comments: Monday’s feeder special featured
450 head of cattle, with a good run of 600-700
weight calves and cows. Slaughter cows were
up a bit over last week, with an average price
of 85 to 87 cents per pound, and a top price of
94 cents per pound. Bulls were steady, with a
top price of $1.06, and an average of 95 cents
on a light run. Cow calf pairs brought $1325
to $1800. We had an excellent feeder market,
with good farmer trade and commercial buyers
on the market. 400-500 weight steers brought
$2.01, with an average of $192.00, while same
weight heifers brought $1.54 and averaged
$1.34. 600-700 weight steers brought $175.25
at the top end, and averaged $157.15. Heifers
weighing 700-800 pounds brought up to
$155.00, and averaged $146.05.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
April 7
Milk production is steady to higher in Califor-
nia. Contacts report that milk production is fl at
compared to this time last year. Limited tanker
availability is prohibiting stakeholders from
moving loads of milk to other states. Some
production facilities in the area are, reportedly,
selling loads of milk at a discount due to labor
shortages and unplanned down time. Steady
demand is present across all Classes.
Farm level milk production is trending higher
in Arizona, though contacts report that output
is down compared to this time last year. Milk is
available for processing in the state, and some
plant managers report that they are no longer
using milk produced in other states. Demand
for both Class I and Class IV are steady.
New Mexico milk production is increasing,
following seasonal trends. Processors in the
state say that milk is available to meet current
production demand. Class I demand is steady
to lower, as some educational institutions
are closed for spring break. Class II demand
is steady.
In the Pacifi c Northwest, farm level milk
production is trending higher. Spring break at
some educational institutions in the area has
contributed to decreased Class I demand. Loads
of milk that have become available due to this
are being processed at balancing operations in
the area. Demand is steady for Class II and III.
In the mountain states of Idaho, Utah and
Colorado, weather favorable to milk production
is increasing cow comfort and contributing to
higher milk production. Stakeholders say that
spot milk is available and that some loads are
being sold from $2 to $5 under Class IV. Some
processing facilities in the area are running be-
low capacity, due to labor shortages. Demand
is steady across all Classes.
In the West, contracts for condensed skim
are steady. Demand for cream is strengthening,
as ice cream and butter makers are running
seasonally active schedules. Cream inventories
are available to meet current production needs.
Stakeholders say that some purchasers from
other regions, where inventories are tighter,
have expressed interest in purchasing loads of
cream from the West.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers
sold steady to 3.00 lower. Demand was report-
ed from moderate to very good depending
on fl esh condition and area. Buyers were
willing to take on inventory albeit at lower
prices due to sharply higher grain futures and
falling upfront feeder cattle futures. Nearby
Feeder futures were 5.025 and 6.750 lower
for the week, while June Live cattle lost 2.025
this week.
In the grain pit this week, July corn was 0.39
higher and July soybeans were 1.0125 higher.
December new crop corn closed the week at
7.16; 2.20 higher than last year same time and
that has pressured futures this week.
The supply of feeders would be considered
moderate at this point in the season, and Year-
to-Date auction receipts on this report are
only around 44K less than a year ago.
New crop unweaned fall calves have started
to make their way to town as ranchers are
not willing to graze drought aff ected fi elds
with calves this year. Demand was moderate
for those kind and discounts are applied to
those cattle that won’t go to grass and take to
gaining in a hurry.
Most ranchers are trying to hold their herd
genetics together by keeping their best fe-
males. Cows that are somewhat borderline on
production traits may fi nd their way to town
sooner rather than later as input costs have
grown substantially in the last year.
Weather in the Plains continues to be a
roller coaster as snow was seen fl ying in areas
this week only to be followed by a warm-up
into 70s and 80s over the weekend. Due to
the fl uctuating temperatures, farmers are
now itching to get in the fi eld even though
the ground temperature may not be ideal;
they like to look at the calendar when making
those fi rst planting decisions.
Negotiated live trading of fed cattle in the
Southern Plains sold steady to 1.00 lower
from the previous week at 137.00 to 138.00,
while dressed sales in Nebraska sold steady
at 222.00.
The Boxed beef cutout was mixed this week
with Choice higher and Select lower. Whole-
sale buyers will now turn to Mother’s Day and
Memorial Day holidays as Easter ham sales are
this week in the grocery stores. Choice boxed
beef closed the week 3.33 higher at 270.47,
while Select was 2.19 lower at 260.33 for the
same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal in-
spection estimated at 676K for the week, 37K
more than last week and 34K more than a year
ago. If realized, this week’s cattle slaughter
would be the fi fth largest since 2011. Auction
volume this week included 54 percent weigh-
ing over 600 lbs and 46 percent heifers.
