March 14
Comments: Monday’s regular cattle sale
featured a good run of cows and a light run
of feeders. Not enough feeder cattle for a
true market test, though light calves con-
tinue to be in demand, especially weaned
green calves. Slaughter cattle were higher,
with the best of the cows bringing 85 cents
per pound, with an average price of 77-80
cents. Slaughter bulls were also higher,
bringing over $1.00 per pound on the top
end, and 93-96 cents on average. The bull
market had a higher limit, but was limited
by a lack of lean, high yielding bulls on offer.
The outlook for both calves and cull cows
moving forward is trending higher, both
in the futures and at market, as demand
remains high and overall cattle numbers
are lower due to culling in drought affected
areas. As we come into grass, and hopefully
receive more moisture, we should see calf
prices continue to rise.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
March 17
In California, milk production is trending
higher. Milk is available, but labor shortag-
es are preventing some processing plants
in the state from taking in additional loads.
These additional loads are, reportedly, be-
ing sold at a discount to some customers
in nearby states. Educational facilities in
some parts of the state have spring break
scheduled in the coming weeks, reducing
demand for Class I. Class II demand is
steady.
Milk producers in Arizona say that
production is increasing but is down com-
pared to a year ago. Some plant managers
report that they are taking in loads of
milk from nearby states to meet current
production needs. Bottling demand is
declining as spring break has caused some
reduced milk purchasing from educational
institutions. Demand for Class IV milk is
steady.
Farm level milk production is trending
higher in New Mexico. Producers in the
state say that milk output is down year
over year, but that milk is available in the
state to meet production demands. Class
I demand is steady, while Class II demand
is increasing.
Warmer weather in the Pacific Northwest
is increasing cow comfort and milk produc-
tion. Milk is available for production in the
area, but some stakeholders say that labor
shortages are preventing them from pur-
chasing additional loads. Demand for Class
I milk is steady, while Class IV demand is
strengthening.
Milk production has continued to pick up
in the mountain states of Idaho, Utah, and
Colorado, though some contacts report
that output is below previously forecasted
levels. Stakeholders say that milk is avail-
able, but that inventories are not excessive.
A shortage of truck drivers and labor
shortages are causing some production
facilities in the area to run below capacity.
Demand is steady across all Classes.
In the West, condensed skim contracts
are steady. Cream availability is tightening
in the region. Demand for cream is increas-
ing as ice cream producers are ramping
up production in preparation for spring.
Some butter makers are utilizing cream
loads internally, to build butter inventories,
rather than selling on the spot market.
The regional shortage of truck drivers is
limiting the ability of some stakeholders
to move loads greater distances. This has
caused some cream sellers to accept lower
multiples from nearby purchasers. Western
cream multiples moved lower at the
bottom, while the top held steady.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers
sold 2.00 to 4.00 higher. Demand was
moderate with those most suitable for
grazing and quick weight gain seeing the
best demand.
Backgrounders are sure glad to see the
market move up this week after seeing out-
side influences dictate a market downturn
the last couple weeks, when fundamentals
should be showing a steady to higher
trendline.
With the beef cow herd selling off at a
sharp rate due to drought in the North and
South Plains, one would naturally think
that cattle will be moving to higher prices
in the future.
Spring has officially sprung on the
calendar and weather conditions in many
areas of the country felt very spring-like
with temperatures climbing into the 70s.
Backgrounders are ready for the green
grass to get here and yesterday wasn’t soon
enough.
High costs of feedstuffs this year will cut
into the bottom line. Also, all costs of inputs
have skyrocketed in the recent year. The
Creighton University Rural Mainstreet Index
(RMI) climbed in March from February’s
healthy reading and remained above
growth neutral for the 16th straight month,
coming in at 65.4, up from February’s 61.5.
The index ranges between 0 and 100 with a
reading of 50.0 representing growth neutral.
Negotiated live trading of fed cattle in
the Southern Plains sold steady from the
previous week at 138.00, while dressed sales
in Nebraska sold 1.00 higher at 221.00.
The boxed beef cutout made incremental
gains this week as warm weather brings on
more barbecuing outside. Choice boxed
beef closed the week 3.45 higher at 258.16,
while Select was 1.54 higher at 250.65 for
the same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal
inspection estimated at 644K for the week,
the same as last week, and 15K more than a
year ago. Auction volume this week includ-
ed 57 percent weighing over 600 lbs and 45
percent heifers.
