Comment: We are starting to see some
early marketing of calves and yearlings
due to lack of moisture. Feeders were
steady with above average volume for
this time of year. Weigh cows and bulls
were very active with an uptick of 8-10
cents.

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
Feb. 17
Seasonally warmer weather is increasing
cow comfort levels in California. With
increased cow comfort, producers say that
milk output is increasing. Some processing
facilities are running below capacity due to
labor shortages. Plant managers say that
these labor shortages are limiting their
ability to take additional loads of milk.
Demand for Class II has declined, while
Class I demand is unchanged.
Producers in Arizona say that farm level
milk production is trending higher, but
that milk output is down year over year.
Transportation delays are causing some
processing plants in the state to run
below capacity, while milk continues to
be available. Demand is steady to higher
across all Classes.
Milk production is increasing in New
Mexico, as some producers say they are
sending loads to other regions to help
meet demand. Contacts report that milk is
available for production. Some loads are
facing delays due to staffing shortages and
an ongoing shortage of truck drivers. Class
II demand is steady, while Class I demand
is trending higher.
Warmer weather in the Pacific Northwest
is contributing to higher milk production.
Contacts report that the number of truck
drivers and tankers in the area are limited,
reducing their ability to send milk to
potential purchasers in other parts of the
West. These shortages are also delaying
the delivery of milk to some processing
facilities. Some plant managers say that
these delays, combined with labor shortag-
es, are causing them to run below capacity.
Demand is steady across all Classes.
As in other parts of the West, milk
production is increasing in the mountain
states of Idaho, Utah, and Colorado. Farm
level milk production in the area is, re-
portedly, down year over year. Some plant
managers say that they have some space
to take on additional loads of milk, but
that they are limiting their purchasing as
labor shortages are causing them to run re-
duced schedules. Demand is steady across
all Classes. Condensed skim contracts are
steady throughout the region.
Contacts say that there is some interest
in loads of condensed skim from purchas-
ers in the Midwest and Mexico. Stakehold-
ers say that they are having some difficulty
moving loads of condensed skim to these
areas due to a shortage of available truck
drivers. The shortage of available truck
drivers in the region is also affecting loads
of cream.
Cream inventories are available to meet
steady demand. Western cream multiples
moved higher at the top of the range,
while the bottom is unchanged.

Compared to last week, steers and heifers
sold 5.00 to 9.00 higher. Demand continues to
be good to very good nationwide this week as
there weren’t any winter storms to disrupt the
marketing flow of cattle.
The best demand was for the mid to lighter
weight cattle that would be suitable for graz-
ing once grass arrives; the calendar has now
moved to the middle of February and turn out
time will be here before ranchers realize.
In many Midwestern states this week, many
light 5-weight steer calves eclipsed the 200.00
mark and 8-weight steers have moved past
the 160.00 level.
The feeder cattle futures for the summer
and fall months are bullish and a higher feeder
market may be on the horizon.
Cattle feeders remain optimistic for the
spring fat market and are willing to chase
the feeder market as they want to have stock
ready to market. In the Northern Plains, this
winter has been open for the most part, which
is allowing cattle to stay clean and grow easily.
After the previous week surge in the CME
Cattle Complex, last week the futures had
difficulty keeping the momentum up. For this
week, the Cattle Complex was mixed with
the February through August Live contracts
were lower with the Fall/Winter months being
higher. The only Feeder Cattle contract higher
for the week was the March contract and that
was only 0.125 higher on the week. The rest of
the listed months were 0.225 to 0.900 lower
for the week.
Negotiated live trading of fed cattle in the
Southern Plains sold steady to 1.00 higher
from the previous week at 140.00, while
dressed sales in Nebraska sold 2.00 higher at
224.00. Cutout prices were pressured again
this week as Choice boxed beef closed the
week 5.29 lower at 274.52, while Select was
8.22 lower at 267.83 for the same period.
Weekly Cattle Slaughter under federal
inspection estimated at 659K for the week,
20K more than last week, and 53K more
than a year ago. If realized, the weekly Cattle
Slaughter will be the largest this year so far
and largest since the beginning of December
2021.
Auction volume this week included 61
percent weighing over 600 lbs and 43 percent
heifers.
