Comments: Monday’s regular cattle sale
featured over 500 head of cattle, including
a light run of cows, and a large off ering of
feeder cattle. Slaughter cows were stronger
after the winter break, topping out at 75
cents per pound, while averaging 66-69
cents per pound. Slaughter bulls were steady
to higher, with a top price of 86 cents, and an

higher this week, especially on good weaned
and vaccinated calves. Off color and non vac-
cinated cattle continue to be discounted by
buyers, continuing a trend since last fall. 500-
600 weight steers topped out at $169.00,

heifers brought up to $148.50, averaging

Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S.
Jan. 13
California farm level milk production is
steady; some producers note that cold weath-
er and rain in parts of the state have had a
negative eff ect on cow comfort. Demand for
bottling is steady, while Class II demand is
increasing.
Milk production is unchanged in Arizona.
Strong demand for milk is present in the state
as processors are running busy schedules to
meet current market demands. Demand for
Class I milk is up.
Milk production is increasing in New Mexico,
despite colder weather. Staffi ng shortages
are causing delays to some load deliveries in
the state. Contacts note stronger demand for
Class I, but a decline in demand for Class II.
Snow and rain in the Pacifi c Northwest are
contributing to a slight decline in farm level
milk production. This weather has also caused
delays to trucks, and some producers are, re-
portedly, dumping milk that is stuck on farms.
Demand for milk is strong across all classes.
Milk production is steady to higher in the
mountain states of Idaho, Utah, and Colorado.
Producers say that inclement weather is delay-
ing deliveries, though supplies are available
to meet production needs. Demand is steady
across all classes.
Contracts for condensed skim are steady
in the West, while cream is available to meet
strengthening demand. Severe weather and a
shortage of truck drivers are causing delays to
deliveries of cream. Western cream multiples
are unchanged at the bottom, while the top
moved higher this week.

No recent price comparison due to the last
couple weeks of holiday-shortened receipts,
however, there was a higher undertone noted
from the last fully reported markets.
Demand was reported as good to very good
depending on how long ago the latest local
auction had occurred while cattle feeders and
order buyers were geared up and ready to
buy cattle.
As tradition goes, the fi rst full week of the
New Year brought a lot of cattle to town.
The supply of feeders was heavy with many
load lots and big strings of reputation cattle
consigned throughout the country.
Picking out highlights was diffi cult as
there was a multitude of impressive sales
nationwide. On Wednesday at Burwell (NE)
Livestock Market, a part load of 808 lb steers
