Sheep and lambs slaughter under federal inspec- tion for the week to date totaled 34,000 compared with 33,000 last week and 38,000 last year. Dairy Report Compiled by USDA Market News Service • Madison, Wis. Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S. June 17 Some delivery delays and bottlenecks were reported this week as contacts say that the widespread transportation issues plaguing the country, including steep freight and tanker shortages, are worst in the West. Little to no precipitation fell in much of the region this week, and the West continued to face higher than normal temperatures. Despite these conditions, and despite normal seasonal patterns of declining yield, Western milk is abundant. Many of California’s water reservoirs are at less than half capacity and nearing record low levels. Melting mountain snowpack, which would typically help replenish reservoirs throughout spring and summer, is largely de- pleted. Some water restrictions are already in eff ect: farmers in central California have been warned of potential water cutoff s, and more widespread cuts are expected to come. However, milk output is steady and strong. Contacts report that, so far, June production is trending up year-over-year and down slightly from last month. Class I orders are fl at to lower. Parts of Arizona are experiencing triple-digit temperatures in this week’s heatwave. Milk output is beginning to drop as the weather warms. While some handlers continue to bring in out-of-state milk, those supplemen- tal volumes are decreasing as well. Class I demand is steady. Milk production is fl at in New Mexico. How- ever, milk is widely available as Class I orders are lower, and Class II demand is level. Some contacts say that balancing is a little stressed as busy manufacturing plants are working to achieve equilibrium between high holdover numbers and lower sales. Milk output in the Pacifi c Northwest is strong but starting to dip down in some areas, following typical seasonal patterns. Overbase programs are in place to help keep milk supply in check. Bottling orders are lower, but Class II and III demand is steady. Throughout the mountain states of Idaho, Utah and Colorado, milk production is heavy in the north but is beginning to taper in the heat further south. Some contacts say spot loads are available in Idaho at discounts of up to $5.50 under Class IV. Class I and III orders are strong. Condensed skim contracts are steady. Limited spot loads are available around fl at class pricing. Cream demand is increasing, but supplies are available to meet current dairy manufacturing needs. Ice cream and butter production are mixed throughout the region, ranging from fl at to very active, and cream cheese production is picking up steam. Cream multiples shifted up this week. Cattle Market Reports Compiled by USDA Market News Service • Oklahoma City-Des Moines-St. Joseph, Mo.-Moses Lake, Wash. NATIONAL FEEDER AND STOCKER CATTLE (Federal-State Market News) St. Joseph, Mo. June 21 RECEIPTS: This Week Last Week Last Year 282,300 289,400 240,400 Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher; with the largest gains coming in the North Central region. Order buyers are willing to take on early weaned calves or yearlings off short grass in the drought stricken areas up north. The main driver for the higher cattle prices this week was the falling grain prices. For the week, nearby July corn lost near 30 cents on the week after a limit down day on Thursday. Likewise, soybeans were not fortunate either, with the July Contract down 1.1250 for the week after being near 1.20 lower on Thursday and over 66 cents higher on Friday. The grains complex changes were very much in the red on Thursday only to bounce back somewhat on Friday as many analysts were thinking that the downturn was overdone. The Cattle Complex was mostly higher on the week with only the back 4 months being lower on the week. June LC contract was 2.35 higher on the week and front 6 months of feeder cattle contracts were over 3.00 higher for the week. Boxed beef values have cooled dramatically this week with Choice boxed beef closing the week 14.28 lower at 323.28, while Select was 21.60 lower at 283.61 for the same time period. On Friday afternoon, the Choice-Select spread was reported at 39.67, the largest on record. Negotiated live trading of fed cattle in the Southern Plains sold at 122.00, while dressed sales in Nebraska sold at mostly 195.00. Week- ly Cattle Slaughter under federal inspection estimated at 663K for the week, 2K less than last week, and 174K more than a year ago. Auction volume this week included 58 percent weighing over 600 lbs and 45 percent heifers.
