Cow calf pairs were just above splitting price, with mid age and older cows with fresh calves at side bringing $1050-1150 per pair. Young pairs with fresh calves brought $1150-$1250 per pair. Pairs with bigger calves at side were split. Baby calves brought $200-$475 per head. Not enough feeder cattle for a true test, though 600-700 weight steers brought $1.44, with an average of $1.29, while heifers brought $1.14 to $1.20. Next Monday, May 24, we’ll have a feeder special and we will be off the following week for Memorial Day. Class I demand is down. Class III orders are growing. In Arizona, milk yield is flat. Some dairy manufacturers with available ca- pacity have been supplementing local milk supplies with out of state milk. Class I demand is steady. Balancing plants are active, and cream cheese and other Class III production is picking up. Milk output in New Mexico is level. Class I and II orders are down. Balancing plants are working through steady milk supplies. Milk is abundant in the Pacific North- west. Overbase programs are in place to help keep supplies in good balance with processing needs. Additionally, organic milk that would have been des- tined for a plant damaged by fire earlier this spring is being diverted to conven- tional facilities throughout the region. Some contacts say that this additional milk source has made output seem even heavier. Class I orders are lower, but Class II and III demand is growing. Milk production is strong in the mountain states of Idaho, Utah and Colorado. Some contacts say milk is especially long in Idaho, where it can be found at discounts of up to $6.00 under Class IV. Bottling orders are flat to lower. Limited spot loads of condensed skim are available around flat class pricing, but contracts are steady. Due to holiday plant closures, cream loosened this week. Some contacts anticipate supplies tightening soon, as summer heat begins to affect milk components. In the meanwhile, ice cream manufacturing is absorbing heavy volumes, and butter churns have no difficulty sourcing quantities needed for seasonally decreased production. This week, the cream multiples range shifted slightly lower. Cattle Market Reports Compiled by USDA Market News Service • Oklahoma City-Des Moines-St. Joseph, Mo.-Moses Lake, Wash. NATIONAL FEEDER AND STOCKER CATTLE (Federal-State Market News) St. Joseph, Mo. June 7 RECEIPTS: This Week Last Week Last year 177,300 194,500 305,200 Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold steady to 4.00 higher on this holiday shortened week. There were several markets that were closed due to the Memorial Day holiday and they took time to give their employees a much needed rest as the weather is starting to finally move towards summer temps. Demand was reported as good to very good for both calves and yearlings at auctions that did hold sales this week. A barn burner of a sale occurred on Memo- rial Day at Russell (IA) Livestock Market; their annual special had a top notch load of yearling steers weighing 701 lbs sold at 162.25. On Thursday at Clarinda (IA) Livestock Auction a load of 940 lb steers sold at 137.00 and on Friday at Fort Pierre (SD) Livestock, four loads of reputation steers weighing 829 lbs sold at 154.00. The calendar in the month of May seemed to drag on as cloudy skies and lower than normal temps took its toll on the outlook for growing forages.
