Pastures are exceptionally dry for this time of year and it’s starting to show in the feeder cattle and the cow-calf market. Less interest in cattle that usually go back to grass. The corn market is really making an impact in the yearling cattle. With the high cost of gain expected to continue they desperately want to buy the feedlot cattle for less. We are now experiencing COVID problems with labor in the packing plants again and it’s backing the cattle up. The organic cows continue to sell extremely well. It’s amazing what competition does for the market. Slaughter cows and bulls were $3-$7 lower on Monday, with an influx of cows coming up from drought stricken California increasing the supply and decreasing demand for cows lo- cally. Cows topped out at 65 cents per pound for slaughter, and feeder cows brought up to 79 cents per pound. The average on cows was 58-60 cents per pound. Slaughter bulls brought up to 91 cents per pound, with an average price of 85 cents. Feeder cattle were lower on an uneven supply, with not enough of any one class for a true market test. 700-800 weight steers were stronger for the local market, bringing up to $1.34, with an average of $1.29, and 800 to 900 weight steers brought $1.30. Dairy Report Compiled by USDA Market News Service • Madison, Wis. Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S. May 6 California milk production is steady. Class I orders are level. Class II is absorbing additional fluid milk due to seasonal pro- duction of ice cream and frozen desserts. In Arizona, milk output is strong, and so is Class I demand. Dairy processors with available bottling or drying capacity are bringing in additional milk from the moun- tain states. Hearty Class II and III orders are supporting active ice cream and cheese manufacturing. Milk supply is even in New Mexico. Bal- ancing plants are working through large volumes of milk, and holdover numbers are decreasing. Contacts report that Class I demand is down slightly, Class II demand is flat, but Class III demand is growing due to increased cheese production. There is an abundance of milk in the Pacific Northwest. Milk output is strong, and regional dairy processors are also helping to clear milk that would have gone to the Oregon creamery that was recently damaged by fire. Class I demand is strong. Industry contacts say that the milk jug resin shortage appears to be resolved and is no longer a hindrance to bottling. Milk production is stable in the mountain states of Idaho, Utah, and Colorado. Class I orders are level. Contracted condensed skim is steady, but local spot load requests, and availability, are reported to be limited. Persistent tanker and driver shortages are a barrier to moving condensed skim into other regions. Western cream is tightening a little, but supply is adequate for current demand. While cream cheese and ice cream production is strong, and butter churns are seasonally active, there is not much excess cream coming into facilities. This week, cream multiples for all classes inched up one point at the top of the range.
