High demand for quality feeders is making the light heifers bring in the $1.40s and steers in the $1.50s. Patrons of Woodburn Livestock Exchange: It is with a heavy heart we are announcing after 80 years in business the Livestock Auction will be closing its doors. This has been an agonizing decision for us to make as we have enjoyed your patronage and friendship over the past many years. Our last sheep, goat and hog auction will be held on Monday, Feb. 15, and our last cattle and poultry auction will be Tuesday, Feb. 23. In recent months there have been various rumors of us selling the property and shutting down. The property is for sale but is not sold at this time. However, due to continual declining head counts and rising costs of doing business, the livestock portion of our business is no longer viable. Woodburn Auction Yard will remain in business doing online-only machinery sales. Our next one is in April. — Tom and Mary Elder Top 10 Slaughter Cows a/p: 64.31 cwt 50 Top Slaughter Cows a/p: 60.28 cwt 100 Top Slaughter Cows a/p: 56.31 cwt Top Certified Organic Cattle: NT All Slaughter Bulls: 80.00-88.00 Block Hogs: 89.00-92.00 cwt Feeder Pigs: 37.50-80.00 HD Sows: 12.00-51.00 cwt Weaner Pigs: 35.00-40.00 HD Lambs: 40-100 lbs 185.00-204.00 cwt; 100- 150 lbs 147.50-203.00 Small Frame Ewes: 95.00-179.00 cwt Fleshy Ewes: 80.00-125.00 cwt Ewe-Lamb Pairs: 87.50-91.00 HD Goats: 10-39 lbs NT; 40-69 lbs 87.50-190.00 HD; 70-79 lbs 95.00-225.00; 80-89 lbs 180.00- 280.00; 90-99 lbs 205.00-265.00; 100-199 lbs 85.00-310.00 HD; 200-300 lbs NT LEBANON (Lebanon Auction Yard) Feb. 11 Receipts: 253, 246 Cattle, 7 Sheep Comment: Consignment consisted of 65% cows and bulls. Dairy Report Compiled by USDA Market News Service • Madison, Wis. Fluid Milk and Cream — Western U.S. Feb. 11 Strong milk production is continuing in California. Milk shipments and handling are back to normal following the winter storm from a couple weeks ago. Contacts suggest the storm was able to ease some of the immediate concerns of drought within the state. Industry contacts say many dairy proces- sors are running at or near capacity and are unable to take on much more milk. In some cases, milk is diverted to calf ranches when there is a disturbance at the processing facility. Class I sales are steady. Class II demand is solid. Milk production in Arizona is rising along typical seasonal patterns. Class I and II demands are steady and pulling good volumes. Milk intakes are in good balance with processing needs. Manufacturers say they are not seeking out additional loads of milk. In New Mexico, milk production is steady to higher, following seasonal patterns. Manufacturers have plenty of milk for processing. Pacific Northwest milk production is strong, and components are above levels from last year. Industry contacts say disrup- tions at individual plants may create the temporary need to move milk around the region, but milk handlers are able to find homes for the milk without much trouble. A healthy retail demand is supporting bottling sales. Mountain state (Idaho, Utah and Colorado) milk production is strong. The abundance of milk in Idaho has kept milk handlers busy searching out homes for the milk. In some cases, processors are squeez- ing the extra milk into their facilities at $4 to $5 under Class IV prices. In Colorado and Utah, milk production is in better balance with processing needs. There is plenty of condensed skim milk available for drying. In pockets of the region, industry contacts say a few manufacturers are considering dumping buttermilk to preserve dryer time for drying condensed skim. Western cream is plentiful, but supply and demand ebbs and flows daily. There may be a deluge of cream one day but more balanced the next, hence the wide range of cream multiples. Ice cream production is picking up and taking up some of the slack. Butter makers are taking in large volumes. At the end of the week, cream is often more available as processor needs are filled for the week. A few cream handlers are trying to work out arrangements to ship some of the extra cream eastward from the West Coast. Cattle Market Reports Compiled by USDA Market News Service • Oklahoma City-Des Moines-St. Joseph, Mo.-Moses Lake, Wash. NATIONAL FEEDER AND STOCKER CATTLE (Federal-State Market News) St. Joseph, Mo. Feb. 8 RECEIPTS: This Week Last Week Last Year 270,200 292,400 219,400 Compared to last week, steers and heifers sold uneven; North Central and South Central auctions 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher while the Southeast auctions were 1.00 to 4.00 higher. Demand for grazing calves was good as backgrounders are looking to get their orders filled early. These ranchers want to get those flyweight calves into their pens early so the health regimen can be gone through and those calves will be ready when turnout time gets here this spring. An Arctic blast is expected to last a week or more in the Plains states and they are somewhat used to those bitter conditions in the Northern Plains and the upper Midwest. Feed conversion of any calf in the feedyard this coming week will be drastically changed from where it has been up to this point in the winter. The feed bunks will get their daily fills like normal from the feed trucks, however, with bitter cold comes the time when cattle are just trying to survive. They are burning Mega-calories just for maintenance, not for growing and gaining weight. This week, sales of fed cattle in the South- ern Plains were 1.00 higher and sold at 114.00 while dressed sales in Nebraska were steady to 2.00 higher and sold at 178.00 to 180.00. Nearby corn and soybean contracts were mostly steady on the week, however, the CME Cattle Complex was higher on the week as the possibility of physical deliveries is on the forefront of market watchers with the Feb LC contract at 2.725 above the cash price in the feedlots. Even with the rise in cash cattle price this week, packer margins have not suffered much as boxed beef values were relatively flat this calendar week. Choice cutout closed 0.63 higher at 234.58, while Select was 1.91 lower at 220.79. The Choice-Select spread has widened from the previous week and is now at 13.79. Cattle Slaughter under federal inspection estimated at 653K for the week, the same as last week and 22K more than a year ago. Auction volume this week included 58 percent weighing over 600 lbs and 42 percent heifers.
