CORE pesticide train-
ing and credit hours, first aid
classes and forklift training
are highlights of the classes
and seminars featured at this
year’s Willamette Valley Ag
Expo, said Jill Ingalls, the Ex-
po’s event coordinator.
No registration is required
for the CORE training ses-
sions, she said.

Course description: There
is concern about the impact
of pesticides on pollinating
insects, and new state and
federal regulations around
pesticide use and pollinators.
This session will have an
easy-to-apply set of rules to
help attendees judge how to

apply pesticides with minimal
impact to pollinators. Attend-
ees will leave this session be-
ing able to judge the risk of a
pesticide treatment to pollina-
tors from information on the
pesticide label and using pub-
lication PNW 591, “How to
Reduce Bee Poisoning from
Pesticides,” as well as the ac-
companying free mobile app
and take practical steps for
reducing this risk, while still
keeping pests under control.
Speaker biography: Mel-
athopoulos is an assistant pro-
fessor of pollinator health ex-
tension in the Department of
Horticulture at Oregon State
University. He has over 15
years of experience working
with commercial beekeep-
ers and growers to develop
solutions for keeping bees
healthy and crop yields high.
Since 2016 he has been lead-
ing OSU’s efforts to design,
implement and evaluate a
statewide pollinator health
program.

Course description: This
course will cover the impor-
tance of sprayer calibration,
sprayer calibration methods
and dry bait calibration meth-
ods. It will cover step-by-step
examples using basic math.
There will be a best practices
discussion and time for ques-
tions. The course will include
discussing use of sprayer
controllers and monitors but
it will not cover specific con-
troller brands and operations.
Speaker biography: Andy
Steinkamp is a location man-
ager for Valley Agronomics
in Donald, Ore. He graduated
from the University of Idaho
with degrees in ag systems
management and ag business.
He has worked in the ag re-
tailer industry for the last 10
years.
He was raised on a fami-
ly farm near Gervais, where
he first worked with sprayers
in cane berries and onions.
Steinkamp has been involved
in all areas of application over
his years as a grower, appli-
cator, manager and in sales.
He currently holds an Oregon
commercial applicator’s li-
cense.
