Marilee was born on March 23, 1944, in Eugene, Oregon, to Wanda Fern (Todd) and Rex Bernard Bonney. She met and married Gary Buss, of Springfield, and had three daughters: Jenifer, Katrina and Elizabeth. In March of 1967, Marilee fell in love with and married James Christie Lake. They had one daughter and a son, Patricia and Brian. The family moved to Union, Oregon, where Chris taught English, and then moved to La Grande a few years later. Marilee was active and athletic. She was part of the Junior Olympics team in Maui, Hawaii, and competed in diving. She loved playing baseball and softball, swimming and bowling. She loved boating and amusement rides. She loved life. Marilee not only competed in sports, but she gave back to her community. She loved to share her love of sports and knowledge with young people. She taught swimming lessons to children. She coached Little League and umpired the games. She was an avid bowler and won many awards, but her proudest moments were coaching young bowlers and watching them succeed. Marilee was crafty and enjoyed ceramics, embroidery, painting and coloring. She encouraged all of us to pursue the arts. She loved Elvis and dancing. After a successful career, Marilee retired from GTE and worked as a bookkeeper with Don and Larry’s before permanently retiring, to begin enjoying the golden years with Chris. Marilee is survived by her husband of 55 years, James Christie Lake; her children, Jenifer Lake of Mountlake Terrace, Washington, Katrina Mosser of Kingston, Washington, Elizabeth Hudson of La Grande, Patricia Hedden of La Grande and Brian Lake of Gresham, Oregon; sisters, Jerri Saunders of Salem, Oregon, and Nan Harrison of Vancouver, Washington; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and family friends. Marilee was preceded in death by her parents, Wanda and Rex Bonney; sister, Sharon Harper; and grandchild, Michael Mosser. There will be a viewing at Loveland Funeral Chapel, La Grande, on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022, from 6-7 p.m. A graveside service will be held Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at 10 a.m. at the Island City Cemetery. Please dress casually and prepare for warm weather. And if you feel you would like to celebrate Mom’s life and loves, please wear your favorite Oregon duck colors, Hawaiian attire, bowling attire, embroidered attire, funky socks, anything bright and fun. She would love that. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Marilee’s name be made to an Alzheimer’s charity of your choice.
