Care Forum on Wednesday,
Aug. 24, from 7:45 a.m. to
4 p.m. The theme of the 10th
annual event is “Living Well:
Embracing Life-Limiting
Health Challenges with Dig-
nity.” Participants will learn
more about palliative care in
the VA system through pre-
sentations and discussions.

Wallowa County Chamber
of Commerce has posted a
list of resources for victims
of the Aug. 11 hail storm in
Wallowa and is asking the
list be shared.
The list includes:

a relief fund where online
donations may be made.
• A form to apply for
$500 in recovery aid is
available at Wallowa City
Hall/Fire Department or at

MONDAY, AUG. 15
9:09 a.m. — La Grande
police responded to Birnie Park
on a complaint about a tran-
sient causing a disturbance.
Officers trespassed the person.
10:46 a.m — La Grande
police responded to the 1900
block of Fir Street on a report of
a fight. The parties separated.
10:50 a.m. — A caller
reported someone abandoned
chickens in the area of 61300
Booth Lane, La Grande. An ani-
mal enforcement officer made
contact and explained options.
3:22 p.m. — La Grande
police responded to the 1300
block of L Avenue on a call
about a transient camp. An offi-
cer made contact with the sub-
ject, who agreed to move by
the end of the day.
TUESDAY, AUG. 16
5:22 a.m. — La Grande
police responded to a report of
a person camped near the rail-
road tracks on the 1900 block
of Jefferson Avenue. An officer
found the person had permis-
sion to be there.
8:26 a.m. — The Union
County Sheriff’s Office received
a call from an Elgin resident
about harassment. A dep-
uty made contact and issued
a warning for telephonic
harassment.
10:55 a.m. — Union County
sheriff’s deputies responded to
the 64800 area of Sammyville
Lane, Elgin, on a report of a pre-
vious domestic disturbance.
Deputies arrested one person
at the scene.
3:16 p.m. — A caller
reported possible animal aban-
donment in the area of 68700
Mill Creek Lane, Cove. An ani-
mal enforcement officer made
contact.
8:35 p.m. — La Grande
police received a report of inde-
cent exposure at Max Square.
An officer then spoke to an indi-
vidual about a homeless camp.
City Hall/Fire Depart-
ment for replacement food
resources.

open seven days a week
right now and anyone in
need of food may stop in,
regardless of eligibility.
• The Wallowa Resale
Store is offering free

McDowell, 79, of Elgin, passed
away on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at
his residence. Per his request, there
will not be a service.
Mike was born on May 31,
1943, in Santa Monica, California,
to John and Lettie (Lawley)
McDowell. He resided in Colorado
and Oregon.
Mike enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, and building and
crafting with wood. He will be forever catching the big
ones in all his favorite lakes and “going on a drive.”
Mike is survived by his former wife, Laurie Elich-
McDowell of Elgin, Oregon; daughter, Michelle (Greg)
Mitchell of Enterprise, Oregon; son, Marc McDowell
of Fair Oaks, California; brother, Murray (Leslie)
McDowell of Vida, Oregon; sister, MaryAnn Sierra of
Oroville, California; nephews, Anthony (Lisa) Sierra,
Daniel Sierra and David Blair of Oroville, California;
niece, Elizabeth Sanchez of Eugene, Oregon; great-
nephews and nieces, Nino and Angelina Sierra of
Oroville, California, and Juan, Gabriel and Rebeca
Sanchez of Eugene, Oregon; grandchildren, Marc and
Tyler Nielson of Lake Tahoe, California; good friends,
Kevin Smith and the crew at Tatmandu in Walla Walla,
Washington; and many more who loved and cared
for Mike. He was preceded in death by his parents,
John Waldo McDowell and Lettie Millicent (Lawley)
McDowell.

Daniel Wayne Hamre was born
Aug. 5, 1960, in Fargo, North
Dakota. He attended high school in
Lynnwood, Washington, where he
was an athlete first in football and
then as the top varsity player in tennis.
Dan started college at Washington
State University then switched to
Texas Tech University, where he
finished both undergraduate and
medical school and became a physician.
During medical school Dan joined the U.S. Army
Reserves. He became an accomplished general and
vascular surgeon and for a time worked at a clinic in La
Grande, Oregon. During Operation Iraqi Freedom in the
early 2000s, Dan was called up and served two tours in
the Middle East, operating on the wounded in a forward
surgical hospital. He saved many lives and was awarded
several medals during these tours including a Purple
Heart, Bronze Star and the Valorous Unit Award for the
915th Medical Detachment.
Dan was injured and returned from the tour disabled.
He attained the rank of full colonel and received an
honorable discharge from the Army in 2007 and lived
much of his remaining life in Boise, Idaho. Daniel passed
away at his home in Boise on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022.
A brief service with military honors will be held Sept.
2 at 11 a.m. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, 10100
N. Horseshoe Bend Road, Boise. The family would ask

Michael “Mike” John Hug of
Hermiston was born Oct. 31, 1953,
in La Grande, Oregon, the son of
Russell and Laura (Schaffer) Hug.
He passed away in Kennewick,
Washington, on Saturday, Aug. 13,
2022, at the age of 68.
Mike grew up on his family
ranch near Summerville, Oregon,
and attended schools in nearby
Imbler. He graduated from Imbler
High School in the class of 1971. After high school, he
attended Eastern Oregon University for two years. He
then took some time to travel and visited Australia, New
Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii. Upon returning to Oregon,
he owned and operated a wood stove business in Elgin,
Oregon, for several years.
He moved to Hermiston in the mid-1980s and has
lived in the Hermiston and Umatilla areas since that
time. He worked as a manager for Coast to Coast
(which later became Ace Hardware) in Hermiston for
nearly 25 years.
Mike married Mary Woodard in Hermiston, Oregon,
on Dec. 7, 1985, and from this union two children,
Marci and Anthony, were born. The couple divorced
after 17 years of marriage.
He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, camping, riding
dirt bikes and ATVs, taking trips to Wallowa Lake and
spending time with his grandkids. He was a member of
Relay for Life in Hermiston and the Hermiston Rotary.
Survivors include his daughter, Marci Murray; son,
Anthony (Chey-Anne) Hug; grandchildren, Morgyn
Murray, Brooklyn Cowan and Casen Hug; brother,
David Hug; sister, Karen Hug; and several nieces and
nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday,
Aug. 26, 2022, at the Burns Mortuary Chapel, 685 W.
Hermiston Ave., Hermiston, Oregon. A private family
interment will be in Summerville Cemetery.

Daniel William Aschenbrenner died
while enjoying a beautiful day outdoors
on Aug. 7, 2022 on Cold Springs Ridge,
Oregon. He was 73 years old.
He
was
born
to
William (Bill) and Rita
Aschenbrenner on Sept.
19, 1948, in Enterprise,
Oregon. He attended school
in Enterprise and graduated
from
Enterprise
High
School in 1967.
He then attended Blue
Mountain
Community
College until he was drafted
by the Army in April of
1968. He attended Infantry
Noncommissioned Officer
School and graduated in
December 1968. He married his high
school sweetheart Donna Varney in
March of 1969 before being deployed to
Vietnam.
Sgt. Aschenbrenner served active duty
with the Bravo Company of the First
Calvary Division (Airmobile) until he was
wounded in battle on Nov. 17, 1969. He
received multiple awards including two
Purple Hearts, the Air Medal, a Bronze
Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Gallantry
Cross with Silver Star, and the Vietnam
Cross of Gallantry with Palm.
He was discharged from active duty
in April 1970, but remained in the Army
Reserve until 1974.
He and Donna lived in Spokane upon
his return to the states until the fall of 1970
when they moved back to Enterprise. He
ran Dan’s Phillip’s 66 Station for a short
time upon his return until he started at
Boise Cascade in December 1971. He
worked at Boise Cascade as a machinist/
millwright until his retirement in 2004.
Dan’s favorite place was the woods.
He loved hunting, fishing
and camping. After his
retirement he would spend
weeks at a time camping,
only coming to town to drop
firewood and get supplies.
His next favorite thing
was supporting his kids
and grandkids. He spent
countless hours on bleachers
and sidelines watching
track, football, baseball,
softball, lacrosse, volleyball,
basketball, tennis, horse
shows and any other activity
the kids were involved in. He was a talented
woodworker and Grampa Dan’s wooden
toys will be cherished by everyone lucky
enough to have one.
He is survived by his mother, Rita;
wife, Donna; his children, Julie and
Brent Hereford and Chad and Cindi
Aschenbrenner; his granddaughters,
Jessica Kooch, Sarah McLaughlin
and Regan Hereford; grandsons, Coy
Aschenbrenner and Peyton Hereford;
great-grandson Macrae McLaughlin;
brothers Larry (Judy) and Steve, as well as
multiple nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father
Bill and brother Stan.
There will be no services. In lieu of
flowers or food, please make a donation
to the Enterprise Education Foundation,
4-H, or the youth organization of your
choice.
