SEASON SCHEDULE
For “Space Jam!” OES’s season open-
ing concert on Sunday, Nov. 6, Benson
will conduct John Williams’s “Star Wars
Suite,” featuring music from the beloved
fi lm series. Complimenting the program
will be Gustav Holst’s tone poem, “The
Planets,” a work that heavily inspired Wil-
liams’s score for “Star Wars.”
The Holiday Music Festival, OES’s
annual ecumenical celebration of the
holidays featuring a variety of community
groups, is Sunday, Dec. 11. In addition to
a performance by the symphony, under
the direction of Assistant Conductor Zach
Banks, this year’s installment will feature
the Pendleton Brass Quintet, Our Songs
Are Alive from the Umatilla Indian Reser-
vation, and Christmas carol singalongs by
Adam Lange.
After a winter break, Benson returns
on Saturday, March 11, 2023, to conduct
the spring concert “Some Like It Scot!”
featuring Felix Mendelssohn’s “Symphony
No. 3 in A minor, Op. 56.”
“Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony is
also known as ‘Scottish Symphony’ due to
its incorporation of Scottish folk melo-
dies,” Kindle wrote in a press release. “The
concerto will include yet-to-be-deter-
mined concerto work.”
The annual Chamber Music Festival will
take place in the Vert Clubroom (located
in the basement of the Vert Auditorium)
on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The festival
features a variety of small ensembles per-
forming chamber works with hors d’oeu-
vres and beverages provided by OES’s
volunteer board of directors.
Kindle said this concert is an optional
addition to the season ticket package (an
extra $20 for adults, seniors and students,
and extra $80 for a family season pass).
The season will conclude Saturday,
June 10, 2023, with “A Hero’s Life” con-
ducted by Benson.
Kindle said OES is programming works
by contemporary African American
composers in its symphonic programs
this season to continue the symphony’s
commitment to diversity. The fall concert
will feature Adolphus Hailstork’s fanfare
“Intrada,” the spring concert Jessie Mont-
gomery’s “Strum,” and the season fi nale
“Immerse” by Quinn Mason.
