Magazine NORTH POWDER — This year’s edition of the North Powder Huckleberry Festival is expanding to two days, July 30-31, plus an extra night event on Friday, July 29, to kick off the weekend. That fi rst off ering is a movie night at North Powder School’s fi eld, sponsored by the North Powder Public Library. The fi lm, “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” begins at 9 p.m. Concessions will be avail- able, and everyone is encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and bug spray. SATURDAY, JULY 30 The festival starts early with an all-class breakfast at North Powder School at 7 a.m. If you’d rather exercise than eat, join the fun run/walk at North Powder Fire Hall — choose the 1-mile, 5K or 10K distance. Entry is $20 for adults and $10 for youth ages 12 and younger. At 8 a.m., more than 50 vendors — both craft and food — will open at the park. The Motor Madness Car Show begins at 10 a.m. Entry is $5 and awards are up for grabs in a variety of categories. The Huckleberry Festival parade begins at 11:30 a.m. Entries need to check in 10- 11 a.m. The theme is “Old America,” and fl oats can register the day of at the corner of Second and H streets. Following the parade is the messiest of athletic feats — the mud volleyball tournament. Entry is $150 per team, and the tourna- ment is limited to 10 teams — for informa- tion, call Thompson. For those who don’t like mud, the corn- hole tournament also starts at noon, and the rock climbing wall opens. The fi re hall’s annual tri-tip dinner be- gins at 5 p.m. Cost is $17. SUNDAY, JULY 31 For the second day of the festival, ven- dors open at 8 a.m. Then the contests begin: • 9 a.m.: Sidewalk chalk art contest — there are three categories: ages 3-10, ages 10-18 and ages 18+ • 10 a.m.: Pie eating contest • 11 a.m.: Tricycle races and dunk tank To enter any of these contests, call Thompson at the number above.
