Otherwise, healthy and quick witted until the end, she had a smile that could light up a room and had a persistent good nature that was an inspiration. “Isn’t that wonderful” was a phrase you could count on during most any visit with her. A memorial service will be held at the La Grande Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at 10:00am. Born December 28, 1916 to George Frederick and Martha Ella (Hopkins) Hagey in Starkey, Oregon, she was the sixth of nine children. She shares that birthday with two great-great-grandchildren and reveled in that. She was a precocious child. During one visit to town, she was fascinated watching a barber working while sitting in the car waiting for her father. She took the 50¢ she was given to buy a treat and instead got herself a haircut. She was a hard worker, starting at a young age doing many different jobs but after attending beauty school she spent most of her career as a beautician, working for several shops as well as running her own business at various times. Mildred married Sheldon Hyde in 1941 and worked at her in-law’s store in Island City. Linda Rae (Raylene) and Janet Irene were born of this union. Sheldon had a problem with the bottle which led to divorce. Five years later, Mildred married Harold Hamblet, a widower with three children: Wayne, Judith and Linda. After that marriage ended, Mildred found the love of her life and married Sidney McMurphy on June 19, 1967. They had many adventures traveling around the country and were quite a pair, with matching sunny outlooks. Mildred treated her step-children Wayne, Judy and Linda as well as Ron and Robert McMurphy and all the grandkids, great-grands and great-great-grands as her own. Many fond memories were created by this extended family around her table in Union at the apartment under her beauty shop in the old church as well as their house on Dearborn Street. A persistent and prolific letter writer, she always seemed to keep one letter ahead of us all, and those letters inevitably left the reader with a smile and an uplifted outlook. Mildred was baptized into the LDS church in 2004 and she spoke warmly of the members of her congregation and the love they showed her. The family is very grateful for that care and concern. Mildred is predeceased by her husband Sid; parents, Fred and Martha; siblings, Edna, Fred, Dale, Evelyn, Willard, George, Gertrude and Theodore as well as daughter, Raylene; step-son, Wayne, and grandson, Quinn Bristow. She is survived by daughter, Janet; step-daughters, Judy and Linda; step-sons, Ronald and Robert; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 35 great-great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-great- grandchildren. In lieu of flowers please direct any memorial gifts to the charity of your preference in her name. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.lovelandfuneralchapel.com.
