LA GRANDE —
Thanks to a grant from
Oregon Humanities, Art
Center East is now sched-
uling special talks with art-
ists who are featured in the
center’s galleries.
“We can educate the
public about the artists we
have in our space,” said
Jenn Durr, gallery director.
The first featured
Peter Clark, who talked
about the pop-up exhibit
#150mmchallenge.
“He told his story and the
background of that interna-
tional exhibit,” Durr said.
The next, set for Friday,
July 1, features Nancy Cof-
felt. Her talk coincides with
the closing reception of her
show “Wild and Whim-
sical.” The reception is from
6-8 p.m. Coffelt’s talk will
start at 6:30 p.m.
These events are free and
open to the public. Refresh-
ments will be available.
“We really want the
community to come in,”
Durr said.
The talks offer a chance
to hear about the artist’s
background, and the pro-
cess of how he or she cre-
ates art.
“I love to learn the way
different artists create,”
Durr said. “The what and
why is super important.”
Coffelt, who is also a
children’s book author and
illustrator, is known for
her whimsical and colorful
oil pastel pieces. She now
works with acrylic gouache
and metal leaf on birch cra-
dled boards.
After Coffelt, the next
artist talk features Nicole
Freshley on July 8, during
the opening reception
for her show “Tideline to
Alpine.”

Lilyan Margrete (Peters) Hale
May 21, 1941 - June 22, 2021
Lilyan Margrete (Peters)
Hale was born May 21, 1941,
in Haver, Montana, to Henry
and Rose Peters. She grew up
and graduated from high school
in Chinook, Montana. She often
commented about how cold it
was in the winter in northern
Montana and how she wanted to
go someplace not as cold.
Lilyan married Jim Hale
Nov. 10, 1966, in Greenup, Kentucky, and they were
married until his death in 2014. She and Jim met in
Germany when he was in the military and she was
working for the telephone company. They lived in Ohio
for several years in a home they built in Portsmouth on
Jim’s grandparents’ property. They moved to Chinook,
Montana, for Jim and Lilyan to help care for her
parents. In the early 1990’s they moved to Enterprise,
Oregon, because of Jim’s lungs, where they operated a
laundromat and carwash in Enterprise and lived above
the laundromat. They moved to Elgin in 1999 because
Jim was tired of driving the canyon to play music. Jim
and Lilyan brought her mother to Elgin before her death
so they could care for her in her later years.
Lilyan had many friends through her sewing groups
at Claudson’s Sew and Soak as well as her church
family at Summerville Baptist Church. She was so
loved by many in her community of Elgin. Lilyan loved
to sew and she became a very accomplished seamstress
and quilter. She sewed for many people. She loved her
dear friend Stacey Johnson, who became her adopted
granddaughter unofficially. Stacey cared for Lilyan
greatly during the past several years. Stacey was a
caregiver to Lilyan’s mother before her death, but their
friendship began when Lilyan fully altered Stacey’s
wedding dress to help her get ready for her wedding.
In the words of one of her dear friends Sheri Rogers,
“Lilyan Hale was extraordinary in her positive and
energetic response to anyone in need. Her love of
her Lord and her church family guided her on many
missions of mercy and provided her with a strong base
of acceptance and friendship she so desperately sought
after losing her husband. Her sewing and creative
talents endeared her to her circle of friends and many in
the community were recipients of her warm generosity.
Her hands were tirelessly busy, and despite advancing
arthritis, managed to complete dozens of beautiful
quilts that she shared with abandon. She loved to laugh
and make others laugh with her. She was a friend to
be treasured with a kind and merciful heart and shared
her love and the love of the Lord quite willingly. She is
so missed, but the warmth of her spirit still provides a
warm glow. Rest well my friend.”
Lilyan passed away on June 22, 2021, in Kennewick,
Washington, at Trios Health Southridge Hospital. She is
survived by her grandson, Anthony Hale and his son,
Wyatt; and her cousins, JJ Jamison and Kelly Riggs,
both of Ohio. She is preceded in death by her husband,
Jim; her sister, Rita Ash; and her parents, Henry and
Rose Peters.
A memorial service will be held at Summerville
Baptist Church on Sunday, July 3, at 4 p.m. Please join
us to celebrate the life and memory of this dear lady.
