SOUND CHECK WHAT’S PLAYING AROUND THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST 15 JUNE 815, 2022 ‘Fractal Miniatures’ concludes symphony season Go! staff P ENDLETON — Oregon East Symphony wraps up its season with “Fractal Miniatures” on Saturday, June 11, at the Vert Auditorium, 480 SW Dorion Ave. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. General admission is free, thanks to a grant from the Round- house Foundation, said J.D. Kindle, OES executive director. For this fi nale concert, OES conductor and artistic director Dr. Beau Benson will lead the symphony in performing “Frac- tal Miniatures” by American composer Roger Zare, Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez and Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6. Kindle explained that “Fractal Miniatures” is inspired by Zare’s fascination with fractal images, which are “infi nitely complex patterns created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop.” “In the piece of music, Zare has strung eight short move- ments together that each refl ect his impressions of various fractals, taking them as pieces of art,” he said. In addition to the music, the audience will see a slideshow of photographs by Joe Cantrell, a Portland photographer who documents fractal patterns in nature. Also in the program is Márquez’s Danzón No. 2, which Kindle said is “one of the most popular and most frequently performed orchestral Mexican contemporary classical music compositions. It is based on the danzón, a slow, formal partner dance from Veracruz, Mexico.” Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, also known as his “Pathé- tique Symphony,” was the com- poser’s fi nal symphonic work and premiered Oct. 28, 1893 — nine days prior to his death. “Symphony No. 6 has been interpreted as a suicide note, especially due to the strong emotions conveyed therein and its quotations of the Russian Orthodox requiem,” Kindle said.
