May 27 is National Poppy Day
Donations honor the fallen,
support today’s veterans
The Observer
LA GRANDE — The La Grande
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 43
encourages the community to honor
our fallen warriors and contribute to
the continuing needs of our veterans on
National Poppy Day, Friday, May 27.
Members of the local auxiliary
will be at BiMart from 9 a.m. to
6 p.m. to distribute bright red pop-
pies in exchange for a donation. The
Flanders Fields poppy has become
an internationally known and recog-
nized symbol of the lives sacrifi ced
in war and the hope that none died
in vain.
The American Legion Family
called upon Congress to proclaim
the Friday before Memorial Day as
National Poppy Day, which was offi -
cially designated as such in 2017,
according to information provided by
the Unit 43 auxiliary.
“Wearing the poppy on National
Poppy Day and throughout Memo-
rial Day weekend is one small way to
honor and remember our fallen war-
riors who willingly served our nation
and made the ultimate sacrifi ce for
our freedom,” said ALA Unit 43’s
poppy chairman, Margy Tucker. “We
must never forget.”
The poppy also honors hospital-
ized and disabled veterans who hand-
craft many of the red crepe paper
fl owers. Making the poppies provides
a fi nancial and therapeutic benefi t to
the veterans, as well as a benefi t to
thousands of other veterans.
When the American Legion
Family adopted the poppy as its
memorial fl ower in the early 1920s,
the blood-red icon became an
enduring symbol of honor for the sac-
rifi ces of our veterans from the bat-
tlefi elds of France in World War I to
today’s global war on terror.
The American Legion Auxiliary
raises about $4 million each year

Poppies are in full bloom in a fi eld near
Sommepy-Tahure, France, on Wednesday,
Oct 14, 2014. The poppy as a symbol of war
casualties started with a poem. In the spring
of 1915, a Canadian artillery unit brigade
surgeon named Lt. Col. John McCrae saw
bright red poppies blooming on the war-
torn fi elds where so many soldiers had lost
their lives, and he was moved to write “In
Flanders Fields.” National Poppy Day takes
place in 2022 on Friday, May 27.

June 10, 1953 - May 12, 2022
Linda L. Smith of Moses
Lake, Washington, peacefully
passed away May 12, 2022,
in Ephrata, Washington, at
Columbia Basin Hospital.
Linda was born in Baker
City, Oregon, on June 10, 1953.
She was raised in La Grande,
Oregon. After her high school
graduation in 1971, Linda moved
to Spokane, Washington, where
she attended Kinman School of
Business. While in Spokane she met and married the
father of her children, Darcie and Aaron. The family
moved to Walla Walla, Washington, in 1973 and then to
Moses Lake in 1975.
Linda worked as a lead supervisor at Sundstrand
Data Control for over 10 years where many of the
employees enjoyed working with her. After retirement,
Linda moved back to her hometown of La Grande for
several years but once again found her way back to
Moses Lake.
As a young girl, Linda enjoyed spending time
at their family cabin in the Blue Mountains, on her
grandparents’ ranch in Baker City and at her aunt and
uncle’s country home in Coeur d’Alene. At an early age,
Linda discovered she had a passion for reading, which
led to quite a book collection, and she struggled parting
with any book. As a young teenager, Linda took pride
in sewing her own clothes. In her earlier adult years,
she loved bowling and going out dancing with friends.
Linda will be missed for her ability to bring a smile
and a great attitude to almost any difficult situation. Her
family will always cherish the love and support she
gave them.
Linda is preceded in death by her parents, Everett
and Dolores Gilmore. She is survived by her children,
Darcie (Lance) Pope and Aaron Smith; her four
grandchildren, Zackery Smith, Jolie Smith, Brentyn
Smith and Kenneth Smith; great-grandson, Augustus
Smith; and her brothers, Louie and Jim Lyman.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on
May 24, 2022, at Kayser’s Chapel of Memories, 831 S.
Pioneer Way, Moses Lake, Washington.
