A quilt for Ukraine

A community-crafted sunflower quilt to
benefit those in need in war-torn Ukraine
hangs in the window of Community Kindness
of Eastern Oregon Thrift Store at the corner
of Adams Avenue and Fir Street on Thursday,
April 28, 2022. Tracy McKenzie, a local quilter
and instructor, hosted a fundraising event in
late March, and a handful of local residents
spent their day creating blocks for the quilt
that features sunflowers, the national flower
of Ukraine. The quilt will be displayed through
May 6, before being moved to the Union
County Chamber of Commerce to be raffled
off on May 9. Raffle tickets are on sale for $5
each, or five tickets for $20, through Venmo at
@Essentially-Loved.

Dance to live music of The
BlueMountaineers tonight
LA GRANDE — The BlueMoun-
taineers will play Saturday, April 30,
at the Union County Senior Center,
1504 N. Albany St., La Grande. The
end-of-the-month community dance
begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $5, or
free for ages 12 and younger. The eve-
ning also features a finger-food pot-
luck and door prizes.
Senior center announces
changes to takeout lunch
program
LA GRANDE — With in-person
dining again in full swing, the Union
County Senior Center is making
changes to its takeout lunch program.
Meals will still be available to pick up
at the kitchen’s back door from noon
to 1 p.m. on weekdays, but the cost
will be $7 for all beginning Monday,
May 2.
The community, and especially
seniors, are encouraged to come inside
for lunch and social time. On-site
meals are served from 11:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. with a suggested donation
of $4 for age 60 and older and $7 for
those younger than 60. For more infor-

Daddy-Daughter Dance returns
with two events on May 7
LA GRANDE — The La Grande
Rotary’s Daddy-Daughter Dance
returns after a two-year hiatus on Sat-
urday, May 7. The theme is “Ties and
Tiaras” and there will be two times
to choose from: 1-3 p.m. or 6-9 p.m.
The dance will be held at the Union
County Fairgrounds and is for girls
from kindergarten to eighth grade
accompanied by dads or other male
relatives, guardians or family friends.
Tickets are $30 per couple ($10 for
each additional girl). Tickets are lim-
ited. Purchase tickets at www.
lagrandelottery.org. For more informa-
tion, call 541-963-2262. Proceeds from
the event benefit La Grande Rotary’s
youth programs.
Eagle Cap Excursion Train
season begins next week
ELGIN — The Eagle Cap Excur-
sion Train, which offers scenic trips
along the Grande Ronde and Wal-
lowa rivers, opens for the 2022 season
on Wednesday, May 4, with a 10 a.m.
ride. Also in May, the popular Moth-
er’s Day Brunch excursion is on May
8, departing at 11 a.m., and another
ride is planned for May 28. Round
trips leave from the Elgin Depot.
Space is limited and reservations are
strongly encouraged.

who had tickets for canceled rides due
to the pandemic may contact the res-
ervations manager to reschedule on a
2022 excursion.
No more Elgin bingo, but you
can still play in Union
UNION COUNTY — The bingo
games hosted by the Elgin Lions Club
are finished for the season. Games
will return to the Elgin Community
Center after the summer.
In Union, bingo continues on
Wednesday evenings at the Veterans
of Foreign Wars High Valley Post
4060. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with
games starting at 6 p.m. The last game
of the evening is the jackpot, and
organizers say players could win up to
$500. All are welcome.
Reservations encouraged for
Mother’s Day brunch
Grande Lions Club invite the commu-
nity to a brunch on Mother’s Day, on
Sunday, May 8, served from 8 a.m. to
1 p.m. at the center, 1504 N. Albany
St., La Grande. The menu will feature
quiche, country potatoes, sausage,
muffins, yogurt, cheese platter, fresh
fruit and juice.
Tickets are $18, or $9 for ages 6-12;
those younger than 6 eat for free. Pro-
ceeds will directly benefit the Lions’
sight and hearing preservation efforts
and the center’s senior programs with
a focus on Meals on Wheels. For res-

Free hands-on computer
training offered
LA GRANDE — Training &
Employment Consortium, 1901
Adams, is offering free in-person
computer classes. Classes are entirely
hands-on training and run from 8:30-
11:30 a.m. Preregistration is required
by calling Coral at 541-633-2084.
A three-session QuickBooks class
is offered May 10, 12 and 17. The
course is based on building a sample
company and using the accounts to
make daily transactions, receive and
maintain inventory, pay bills, record
payments and review balance sheets
and reports.
On May 24, a Microsoft Publisher
class will explore building newsletters
and creating flyers by adding text, col-
oration and graphics.
Microsoft PowerPoint is taught on
May 26. Participants will build sev-
eral presentations using different tran-
sitions, timings and adding fonts,
graphics, sound and animation.
Training & Employment Consor-

7:12 a.m. — An animal enforcement officer responded to the
900 block of Sunset Drive, La Grande, for a dog at large. The officer
impounded the dog.
8:19 a.m. — A La Grande officer responded to a call about a
domestic disturbance on the 1100 block of W Avenue and resolved
the situation.
8:38 a.m. — A resident on the 60300 block of McAlister Road, La
Grande, asked for contact regarding fraud. A deputy made contact
and explained options.
10:03 a.m. — La Grande police received a complaint about child
neglect. Police took a report.
10:50 a.m. — La Grande police conducted a welfare check on
an individual on the 2100 block of Adams Avenue and called for
medical help.
10:50 a.m. — La Grande police received a report of possible
neglect. An officer made contact and took a report.
10:54 a.m. — A resident on the 1100 block of Alder Street, Elgin,
asked for contact regarding a possible restraining order violation.
A Union County sheriff’s deputy made contact and will follow up.
2:10 p.m. — La Grande police received a request for assistance
with trespassing people from a residence on the 100 block of Sixth
Street. An officer made contact and explained options.
6:15 p.m. — An Elgin resident on the 200 block of South 12th
Avenue reported a relative took a dirt bike. A Union County sher-
iff’s deputy made contact and explained options.
7:54 p.m. — A caller reported a person was causing a dis-
turbance at McDonald’s, 2308 Island Ave., La Grande. An officer
responded and cited a 38-year-old man for second-degree disor-
derly conduct.
1:19 a.m. — A caller on the 1100 block of Adams Avenue, La
Grande, made a complaint about fraud. A Union County sheriff’s
deputy made contact and took information.
9:40 a.m. — La Grande police received a complaint about litter-
ing on the 2200 block of 26th Street. An officer responded and tres-
passed one person.
11:12 a.m. — A caller at Grocery Outlet, 11301 Island Ave.,
Island City, reported locking keys and an infant inside their vehi-
cle. Law enforcement contacted Legacy Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram
dealership, which assisted.
11:51 a.m. — A caller reported a horse and donkey on the loose
in the area of M Avenue and Alder Street, La Grande. An animal
enforcement officer responded and returned the animals to their
owners.
3:12 p.m. — La Grande police received a report of a runaway. An
officer made contact and returned the person home.
3:21 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office took a report for
a sex crime in Cove.
9:47 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office received a request
for a welfare check on an Elgin resident. The person was fine.
11:06 p.m. — Union County sheriff’s deputies responded to a
report of a domestic disturbance in the area of 64100 Case Road,
Cove. Deputies found there was no crime and the parties had
separated.

Thomas R. Knowles
March 17, 1943 – March 2, 2022
Thomas Ray Knowles, 78,
of La Grande, passed away on
Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at a
local care facility. A service for
Thomas has already been held.
Thomas was born on March
17, 1943, in Gainesville,
Florida, to John T. and
Elizabeth (Rook) Knowles.
He resided in Gaston, North
Carolina; Modesto, California;
Union, Oregon; and La Grande,
Oregon. He married Sandra Morris.
Thomas was a mechanic. He loved building cars,
working on cars and fixing cars for other people, until
his retirement. He liked NASCAR and collected and
sold memorabilia for all sports.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Sandra; children,
Bethany Troutman of Union, Oregon, and Thomas
R. Knowles of Charlotte, North Carolina; six
grandchildren, Adina Christine, Micah Troutman, Jesse
Troutman, Rebekah Troutman, Joshua Troutman and
Gabreil Troutman; three great-grandchildren, Ryleigh
Troutman, Emmett Troutman and Jaxon Troutman. He
was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas
Knowles and Elizabeth Knowles.

Torry A. Hardenbrook
July 19, 1968 - April 25, 2022
Torry Alan Hardenbrook, 53,
of La Grande, passed away on
Monday, April 25, 2022, at his
residence. A celebration of his
life will be held at 66610 Hunter
Road, Summerville, Oregon, on
Friday, April 29, 2022, at 5 p.m.
Torry was born on July 19,
1968, in Beaumont, Texas, to
Vernon and Patricia (Rumgay)
Hardenbrook. He had a gypsy
soul. He laid his head a lot of
places, but his heart always resided in the Grande Ronde
Valley. He graduated from La Grande High School. He
married Cleona Hamner and they later divorced. He
then married Sherri Miller and they later divorced.
Torry was a jack of all trades, Master of One. He was
THE machinist at Woodgrain Particle Board. He was an
exceptional metalworker and gunsmith. He enjoyed elk
hunting, archery, hunting mushrooms, riding dirt bikes
and four-wheelers and was an avid outdoorsman. He
especially enjoyed watching his boys wrestle and his
sweet pea show horses. He was a lifetime member of
the NRA and the RMEF.
Torry is survived by his children, Andy
Hardenbrook (Megan) of Thompson Falls, Montana,
Tylar Hardenbrook of Eagletown, Oklahoma, and
Amie Wade (Mitch) of Eagletown, Oklahoma; father,
Vernon “Skip” Hardenbrook (Sheila); stepfather, Bill
Carson; sister, Traci Hoadley (Allen) of La Grande,
Oregon; stepbrother, Michael Smith of La Grande;
seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia
(Rumgay) Carson; grandfather, Vernon Hardenbrook;
grandmother, Dorothy Howard; and stepsister, Mellisa
Smith.
