Laura was born Aug. 7, 1935, in La Grande, Oregon, the first of three children born to Floyd and Andrea (Ainsworth) Feik. The family spent most of Laura’s growing up years in La Grande until they purchased what would later become Two Rock Simmental Ranch near Summerville. Laura graduated with the class of 1953 at Imbler High School. A couple years later, on May 5, 1955, she married John “Dean” McKinnis in La Grande. After a short time in Clovis, New Mexico, while Dean completed his time with the USAF, they returned to the area, making their home La Grande for a couple years and then to Imbler. Laura held many jobs in her young married life, including working for Dr. Bud Ferdinandsen and operating a small cafe in Imbler. She went to work for Boise Cascade as a secretary, first in the forestry division and later for many years in the purchasing department until her retirement in 1997. After Dean passed away in December 1996, she stayed in Imbler until 2020 when she moved to Grande Ronde Retirement. Laura was artistic and enjoyed crafts all throughout her life. She was a huge music fan and you would find her clapping her hands, smiling and dancing whenever she was around music. Colwell January 23, 1933 - March 26, 2022 Bruce Leon Colwell, 89, of Union, Oregon, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 26, 2022. Bruce was born on Jan. 23, 1933, in Clovis, New Mexico, to George Lester Colwell and Jewell May (Sorrows) Colwell. Bruce proudly served in the United States Navy. He enlisted in 1949 and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was stationed in Guam on the USS Helena during the Korean War. Shortly after his return to the U.S., he met and married the love of his life, Jaqueline “Jackie” Mary (Prochnau) Colwell. They were married in Spokane, Washington, on Oct. 22, 1955. Bruce and Jackie were married 63 years before she passed away in January of 2018. Bruce and Jackie spent many years living in Crescent City, California, where Bruce served on the California Highway Patrol. He then moved his family to Union, Oregon, in 1970 and was employed by the Boise Cascade Particle Board Plant until his retirement in 1995. Bruce was an avid outdoorsman who felt more at home in the woods than anywhere else. He enjoyed big game hunting, and one of his favorite pastimes was to listen to or tell stories of past hunts. He loved cutting firewood and continued this activity well into his 80s. Bruce always took care to stay healthy and fit, and he was aided in this endeavor by his love of gardening, running and hiking. He ran many outdoor road races and competed in these events even into his 50s. Bruce was also a very talented carpenter and woodworker. He had a natural ability for building, and though his skills were mainly self-taught, he could make just about anything he set his mind to. He had a true servant’s heart and would employ his skills and talents freely for those he cared about, without a thought of return. Throughout his years, he accomplished many outstanding projects, as well as amazing works of art - including intricately carved and beautifully finished wooden boxes, large and small furniture pieces, cradles and even toys with many working parts - all of which became immediate keepsakes for anyone lucky enough to receive one of them. Though he could easily have sold his work, that was not his way. He was extremely humble and created solely for the satisfaction of the work, and the joy of giving to those he loved. There was nothing more rewarding in the world for Bruce than to sit with Jackie after a long day of hard work or activity and drink a cup of tea. After 60-plus years of marriage, he still enjoyed listening to the stories his wife would tell over and over, chuckling each time as if it were the first time he heard it. Bruce was kind, friendly and easygoing. He had a great sense of humor and never passed up an opportunity to entertain with his wit and charm. He was the kind of man every man should strive to be, the kind of father, grandfather, brother and son any boy could hope to become, and the kind of husband whose love and devotion is what every woman hopes to find. Bruce is survived by his seven children with Jackie, Dan Colwell of Sandy, Utah, Sally Allen of Ontario, Oregon, Sue Garwood of La Grande, Oregon, Nic Colwell of Richland, Oregon, Dave Colwell of Paradise, California, Norm Colwell of Hood River, Oregon, and Chris Colwell of Imbler, Oregon; sisters, Nona Turner of Cottage Grove, Oregon, and Nell Hammond of Boise, Idaho; and brother, Gary Colwell of Arizona. Bruce was affectionately known as “Pop” to all his children and their spouses, as well as his 28 grandkids and 21 great-grandkids. Bruce was an amazing man who will be remembered fondly by anyone who had the great pleasure and honor of knowing him. A celebration of life memorial will be held at Catherine Creek State Park (in the day-use area across the creek) on Sunday, May 29, 2022. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.lovelandfuneralchapel.com. Mikel Terry Holbrook, 81, of Joseph, passed away at his home of heart failure. Hasse December 5, 1950 - March 30, 2022 David “Dave” James Hasse, 71, of Anacortes, Washington, passed away in La Grande, Oregon, on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at a family home. A service will be held in La Grande at a later time. Dave was born on Dec. 5, 1950, in La Grande to Donald and Doris (Fager) Hasse, the second of three boys. He graduated from La Grande High School in 1969, and married his high school sweetheart and one true love, Coralee Tucker, in June of 1970. They had their first son, James, while living in La Grande and attending Eastern Oregon University. They then moved to Philomath, where Dave and Coralee both graduated from Oregon State University and had their second child, their only daughter, Angela. Their third child, Robert, was later born in Vancouver, Washington. Dave was a civil engineer in construction. He took advantage of various job opportunities and he and his family lived in several cities throughout Washington and Oregon, and even a remote camp job in Snettisham, Alaska. Later, when his kids were grown, he and his wife explored the East Coast with jobs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Mystic, Connecticut, before finally settling down in Anacortes, Washington. He and his family enjoyed white-water rafting, rafting the Salmon, Snake, Rogue, Deschutes, John Day, Owyhee and Grande Ronde rivers. And in all his rafting adventures, he never flipped a raft! Dave and Coralee loved camping and taking road trips together. They would load the camping gear into the car and get “on the road again.” They set foot on the ground in all 50 states while exploring national parks and scenic areas. One of Dave’s favorite destinations was Hawaii, where he loved to hike, snorkel, golf and experience the beauty of Hawaii. Earlier this year, he even talked Coralee into ziplining the Kohala Coast. Dave enjoyed many a yard sale and was often quoted as saying, “I bought it for a dollar at a yard sale.” Dave loved boating and crabbing in the San Juans, where he had built a cabin with lots of help from family and friends. He enjoyed fishing, “where the fishing was good, though the catching not so much.” He was the family photographer, capturing faces and memories wherever he was, and he had recently taken to studying family genealogy. Dave was a handyman, Mr. Fix-It extraordinaire, and was always there to lend a helping hand to friends and family. He believed you could never have too many tools. If one is good, more is better! He was often found tinkering in his shop when he was home. Dave is survived by his wife, Coralee; children, James Hasse (Karmin) of La Grande, Oregon, Angela Bothwell (Robbie) of Sammamish, Washington, and Robert Hasse of Cove, Oregon; brother, Joel Hasse (Leslie) of La Grande, Oregon; father-in-law, Collins Tucker of La Grande, Oregon; sister-in-law, Corliss Howard (Mike) of Cove, Oregon; brother-in-law, Allen Tucker of Pendleton, Oregon; four grandchildren, Braden, Brynnlee, Alyssa and Ashlyn; and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Doris, and brother, Gene Hasse. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.lovelandfuneralchapel.com.
