Joseph
Mikel “Terry” Holbrook, 81, of Joseph, died March
27, 2022, at his home of heart failure. A celebration of
his life will be held April 8 at 11 a.m. at the Thunder
Room, Joseph. Arrangements are by Bollman Funeral
Home, Enterprise.

Learn about proposed school
district bond
LA GRANDE — The La Grande
School District will be conducting five
Bond Information Night programs this
month on the $4.485 million bond the
district will ask voters to approve in
the May 17 election. Money from the
bond would be used to replace the dis-
trict’s aging Annex building with a
new academic and athletic center.
Bond Information Nights will
be conducted on Tuesday, April 5,
in Greenwood Elementary School’s
gym; Thursday, April 7, in Central
Elementary School’s gym; Monday,
April 11, in the La Grande Middle
School’s commons; Thursday, April
14, in La Grande High School’s AV
auditorium; and Thursday, April 21,
in Island City Elementary School’s
library. Each of the information
nights will start at 6 p.m.
People who cannot attend in person
can watch the sessions virtually by using
the Google Meet link on the La Grande
School District’s Facebook page.

Actress sought for small role in
upcoming comedy
UNION — The Blue Mountain Old
Time Fiddlers will put on a show Sat-
urday, April 9, at the Catherine Creek
Community Center, 667 N. Main St.,
Union. Food will be for sale starting
at 5 p.m., with the music following
at 6 p.m. Admission is $5, or free for
ages 12 and younger.
BAKER CITY — Due to unfore-
seen circumstances, the Eastern
Oregon Regional Theatre in Baker
City is looking for an actress for a
small part in its upcoming produc-
tion of “Women Playing Hamlet,” by
William Missouri Downs. As a press
release stated, “Community theater
is all about learning together,” and no
experience is needed.
The comedy features an all-
female cast, and Playscripts.com
described it as “rip-roaring fun for
Shakespeare fans and haters alike.”

planned for April 9

LA GRANDE — A sensory-
friendly egg hunt for special needs
kids and their families will be held
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April
9, at the Riverside Park Pavilion. The
Easter Bunny will be there for pic-
tures. All ages are welcome, and par-
ticipants will receive gift bags and
snacks. Collection buckets will be
available if needed.
RSVP is encouraged so organizers

BAKER CITY — Oregon Trail
Electric Cooperative has updated its
list of unclaimed capital credits. In
accordance with OTEC bylaws and
policy, the names of OTEC members
entitled to and have not yet claimed
their retirements can be reviewed on

at the Union County Senior Center,
1504 N. Albany St., La Grande,
on weekdays. The meal is open to
the public and both sit-down and
grab-and-go options are available.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30
7:44 a.m. — La Grande police received a report of an
attempted burglary at a residence on the 300 block of Jeffer-
son Avenue. An officer made contact and took a report.
7:57 a.m. — A caller reported a kitten was stuck on the 800
block of North First Street, Union. An animal enforcement offi-
cer freed the kitten.
2:13 p.m. — La Grande police responded to 21st Street and
O Avenue for a vehicle crash without injuries. Police took a
report.
4:05 p.m. — The La Grande parking enforcement officer
cited a vehicle on the 100 block of Greenwood Street for park-
ing in the wrong direction.
4:48 p.m. — A resident on the 700 block of Adams Avenue,
La Grande, made a complaint about telephonic harassment. An
officer made contact and provided options.
4:59 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office received a
complaint about noise on the 700 block of Bellwood Street,
Union. A deputy responded and counseled juveniles.
7:43 p.m. — Union County sheriff’s deputies and Oregon
State Police responded to the 86200 block of Mount Glen Road,
La Grande, on a report of a possible assault. Law enforcement
found the situation did not rise to the level of a mandatory
arrest.
9:02 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office responded
to Walmart, 11619 Island Ave., Island City, and arrested James
Glenn Elliott, 20, of La Grande, for first-degree theft.
THURSDAY, MARCH 31
6:54 a.m. — A caller reported an assault on the 3000 block
of First Street, La Grande. An officer made contact and took a
report.
1:25 p.m. — La Grande police received a report of
identity theft at Denny’s Restaurant, 2604 Island Ave.,
La Grande. An officer made contact and took a report.
2:28 p.m. — A caller reported the theft of a vehicle from the
area of 69800 Haefer Lane, Cove. A Union County sheriff’s deputy
responded and took a report.
2:41 p.m. — A caller reported animal abuse on the
1600 block of Baltimore Street, Elgin. An animal enforcement
officer will follow up.
2:52 p.m. — La Grande police received a report of identity
theft at Pinehurst Apartments, 1502 21st St. An officer made con-
tact and took a report.
6:44 p.m. — A caller reported three dogs were run-
ning loose in the area of Cove Avenue and Portland Street,
La Grande.
8:20 p.m. — La Grande police received a complaint about sus-
picious circumstances on the 600 block of 18th Street. An officer
responded and determined it was a small pile of leaves.

Cheryl K. Hafer, 77, of La Grande,
passed away on Tuesday, March 29,
2022, at a local care facility.
Cheryl was born on Aug. 26,
1944, in Promise, Oregon, to Gilbert
and Sadie (Carper) Lyon. She
resided in Wallowa, La Grande and
Cove, Oregon. She graduated from
Wallowa High School in 1962, then
attended Eastern Oregon College
1962-1964. She married her one true love, Guy Henry
Hafer, who was a teacher at La Grande High School, on
June 12, 1966, in La Grande, Oregon.
Cheryl worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph Hospital in
La Grande and later was a bookkeeper for Burr Courtright
Irrigation, House & Wasley Accountants, and Abstract and
Title. She enjoyed volunteering and was a member of the
La Grande Lions, Salvation Army Advisory Board, Knife
& Fork Club, Cove Booster Club, Coats for Kids, Santa
Mall, Star Promenaders Square Dance Club and multiple
scholarship committees. She also enjoyed watching
and cheering for children, grandchildren and all kids in
general. She earned the Woman of Year award for Union
County in 2005.
Cheryl is survived by her children, Lisa Murchison
(Dennis) of Cove, Oregon, and Russell Hafer (Sandra)
of Boise, Idaho; sister, Janice O’Malley of Pendleton,
Oregon; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren;
and too many nieces and nephews to count. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Guy Hafer; parents,
Gilbert and Sadie Lyon; and sisters, Barbara Whaley and
Colleen Neustel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made

McDowell, 48, of Joseph,
Oregon, passed away on
Tuesday, March 29, 2022. A
celebration of his life will be
held at the Cloverleaf Hall,
Enterprise, Oregon, on Monday,
April 4, 2022, at 1 p.m.
Marc was born on June 29,
1973, in Portland, Oregon, to
Durwood “Woody” and Marlene
(Teeney) McDowell. He resided
in Molalla, Joseph, John Day and La Grande, Oregon.
He graduated from Molalla Union High School and
later graduated from Iowa School of Taxidermy and
Oregon State Police Academy.
Marc was an outfitter at their family-owned
packing operation, the Eagle Cap Pack Station, and a
taxidermist. He later became an Oregon State Police
K-9 handler, a senior trooper and a sergeant. In his spare
time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, snorkeling, traveling
and seeing the world with his children.
Marc is survived by his daughter, Alysa McDowell;
son, Austin McDowell; mother, Marlene McDowell;
sisters, Monica Karcher (Bill) of Ponte Vedra, Florida,
Marcie Teeney of Joseph, Oregon, and Misty Beckman
of Joseph, Oregon; brother, Matthew McDowell
(Amber) of Enterprise, Oregon; aunts and uncles, Mitch
and Virginia Teeney and Dave and Lorraine Teeney. He
was preceded in death by his father, Woody McDowell.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be
made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude
Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Jo Anne Garrison Hunt, a resident of Enterprise, Oregon,
passed away on Sunday night, March 20, 2022, peacefully
in her room at the Wallowa Valley Senior Living.
She was born on Feb. 23, 1933, in Pittsburg, Kansas, to
Howard Jayson Garrison and Ada Pearl (Jones) Garrison.
There were six children born to Howard and Ada - Alice,
Grace, Dale, Jean, Mary and Jo - all of whom have gone
before her.
Jo Anne married Stewart L. Hunt on May 26, 1953.
There were three children in this marriage: John Stewart,
Jeanette Marie and Gary Howard.
Jo Anne went to Pittsburgh High School and to Kansas
University. She enjoyed her job with the Cypress School
District in Southern California as a teacher’s aide. Jo
Anne loved to go to the sporting events of her children
and eventually her grandchildren. She loved baseball,
specifically the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Later she watched
a lot of basketball and loved to cheer on Gonzaga as her
team.
We had many camping trips as a family and enjoyed
going on trips to Niagara Falls, Paul Revere’s house,
George Washington’s home on the Potomac, Kennedy’s
grave to see the eternal flame and Plymouth Rock.
After moving to the Wallowa Valley in the 1980s, Jo and
Stu enjoyed raising cows and sheep on their small acreage
outside of town. They enjoyed the country life as did their
family when they came to visit.
Joanne had strong convictions in her faith and attended
the First Baptist Church of Enterprise. Along with her
children, she enjoyed five grandchildren and eight great-
grandchildren: John and Patty Jo Hunt, John Hunt Jr.;
Jeanette and Mark Barnhart, Sam; Ernie and Charon Sams,
Jacob, Ethan, Eli; Tiffany and Michael Cox, Kalon; Evan
and Kendra Sams, Olive, London; Chad and Alice Sams,
Kendra, Kiera; and Gary and Cathy Hunt.
A memorial service will be held April 8, 2022, at 3 p.m.
at the Enterprise First Baptist Church. Bollman Funeral
Home entrusted with arrangements.
