Art Center East launches contest for aspiring artists
The Observer
LA GRANDE — In
celebration of Art Center
East’s 45th anniversary
this year, the organization
has launched an annual
Aspiring Artist Contest.
Each year in March, all
aspiring artists ages 16 to
22 in ACE’s 10-county ser-
vice area will be invited to
submit designs for an ACE
iron-on patch. The con-
test is open to residents
of Baker, Gilliam, Grant,
Harney, Malheur, Morrow,
Wheeler, Umatilla, Union
and Wallowa counties.
The winning design will
become the year’s featured
patch and the artist will
receive an award. This year,
designs must be submitted
to ACE by Thursday,
March 31. The winner will
be announced April 1 at
5 p.m. on ACE’s online and
social media platforms.
The iron-on patch will
be sold in the ACE Gift
Gallery at the art center,
1006 Penn Ave., and
online. All proceeds from
the patches will go toward
ACE’s Youth Scholarship
Fund. This fund provides
youth up to 18 years of age
with reduced-cost (50%
off ) classes and opportuni-
ties to engage in arts of all
kinds (take-home art kits,
music ensembles, etc.).

pastel, watercolor, colored
pencils, scratchboard, col-
lage, chalk pastel, digital
art, photography, charcoal,
encaustic, or mixed media.

Orders due for weekend Irish
dinner order
LA GRANDE — The Union
County Senior Center is off ering a
special take-out St. Patrick’s Day-
themed weekend dinner, to be picked
up Friday, March 18. The $40 meal
will serve a family of four, featuring
corned beef and cabbage, colcannon,
glazed carrots, Irish soda bread and
bourbon chocolate cake.
Pick-up time for the meal is
2-3 p.m. at the senior center, corner of
Albany Street and Cove Avenue, La
Grande.

Wallowa Fiddle Camp
returns this summer
WALLOWA — The Wallowa
Valley Music Alliance announced the
16th annual Wallowa Fiddle Tunes
Camp will be held July 10-15 at the
Wallowa School campus.
This event was begun in 2005 with
the goal of off ering aff ordable, group
fi ddle instruction for individuals and
families in a relaxed, week-long camp
format. Participating in a musical
community through music and dance
has resulted in the addition of instruc-
tion in other accompaniment string
instruments as well as on-site tech-
nique of ensemble participation.

istration fee for this year’s camp
is $200, ($100 for Kidz Fiddle and
Beginning Ukulele), and lunches cost

2:10 a.m. — La Grande police responded to the 2200 block of
Adams Avenue on a report of a fi ght. Offi cers counseled the par-
ties involved.
6:31 a.m. — A caller reported a possible trespasser at La Grande
Retirement Apartments, 1612 Seventh St. An offi cer made contact,
found the subject has mental health issues and provided resources.
11:15 a.m. — La Grande police responded to the 1900 block of
Cedar Street on a report of a vehicle theft. Police arrested Alden
Casey White, 87, for unauthorized entry into a vehicle, vehicle
theft, trespass and felon in possession of a fi rearm.
2:22 p.m. — A caller at a business on the 11600 block of Island
Avenue, Island City, reported telephonic harassment. A Union
County sheriff ’s deputy warned a person.
3:09 p.m. — La Grande police received a complaint about the
theft of a vehicle on the 2700 block of Island Avenue. An offi cer
responded and took a report.
5:04 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff ’s Offi ce received a report
of a suspicious person in the area of 68800 Indian Creek Road,
Elgin. A deputy responded and recovered a stolen vehicle.
7:18 p.m. — Union County sheriff ’s deputies at Division Street
and North 10th Avenue, Elgin, arrested Maegan Renee Criswell, 36,
for fi rst-degree theft and vehicle theft.
8:33 p.m. — A caller at Sixth Street and K Avenue, La Grande,
reported harassment. An offi cer responded and counseled
juveniles.
SUNDAY, MARCH 13
12:54 a.m. — Local law enforcement received a request for
a welfare check in the area of 63200 Highway 203, La Grande. A
Union County sheriff ’s deputy responded and arrested Rachelle
Diahann Smith, 52, for assaulting an offi cer and resisting arrest.
1:05 a.m. — La Grande police during a traffi c stop on the 2200
block of Adams Avenue arrested John Phillip Fellows, 40, for driv-
ing under the infl uence of intoxicants.
12:14 p.m. — A caller reported a domestic disturbance on the
1400 block of Hall Street, La Grande. An offi cer responded, found
this was verbal only and the parties separated.
4:45 p.m. — La Grande police received a call about a burglary at
the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, 107 20th St. An offi cer
made contact and took a report.
7:06 p.m. — Union County sheriff ’s deputies responded to the
600 block of Cedar Street, Elgin, for a disturbance. The subjects
agreed to separate for the night.
9:22 p.m. — A caller reported a vehicle accident in the area of
59000 Foothill Road, La Grande. A Union County sheriff ’s deputy
responded and took a report.
9:59 p.m. — La Grande police received a complaint about a dis-
turbance on the 1500 block of Z Avenue. Offi cers responded and
the parties separated.

Landscape exhibit at
the Josephy Center for

This year, the exhibit
focuses on the Imnaha
terrain and what makes
it wild. Artists are
invited to a noon lunch
and lecture Saturday,
April 30, to kick off
the event at the Imnaha

ensemble in the pleasure of making
music together.
All skill levels and ages are wel-
