Offi cers determined people were arguing and warned them for disorderly conduct. 11:43 a.m. — A caller reported possible animal abuse in the area of 76400 Palmer Junction Road, Elgin. 1:57 p.m. — A caller reported a person was yelling and being threatening at a res- idence on the 1600 block of Carolyn Ter- race, Elgin. A Union County sheriff ’s deputy responded and trespassed the person. 7:51 p.m. — A caller reported juveniles at Walmart, 11619 Island Ave., Island City, rode a motorized cart from a store. An offi - cer responded and found the cart. 10:13 p.m. — La Grande police during a traffi c stop at Cove Avenue and 21st Street arrested Brice Edward Waite, 35, of Union, for driving under the infl uence of intoxicants. THURSDAY, FEB. 10 9:55 a.m. — A caller complained about animal cruelty in the area of 68100 Moses Creek Lane, Elgin. An animal enforce- ment offi cer attempted contact and left a message. 11:07 a.m. — La Grande police responded to the 2500 block of Depot Street on a report of a civil issue. An offi cer made contact and explained options. 11:54 a.m. — A Union County sheriff ’s deputy responded to the 1600 block of Division Street, Elgin, on a report of a sus- picious person and trespassed the subject. 12:32 p.m. — The Union County Sher- iff ’s Offi ce received a complaint about van- dalism on the 1100 block of North Main Street, Union. He passed away in Herm- iston on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, at the age of 72 years. Robert lived in Pendleton during his childhood where he at- tended school. He graduated from Pendleton High School in the class of 1968. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He served as a boatsman’s mate aboard the USS Ajax. He served in the Navy for a total of four years and received the Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge, Robert returned to Oregon and began his career with the U.S. Postal Ser- vice. He worked as a mail carrier and a clerk at the La Grande Post Office until retiring. He moved from La Grande to the Hermiston area in 2005 where he lived until his death. Robert enjoyed many activities such as fishing, gold mining, hunting, golfing and woodworking. He is survived by his two sons, Nate Conklin and Nick Conklin; two granddaughters, Addison and Alivia Conklin; and his two dogs, Jack and Jill. Eric Eugene Bates November 2, 1990 – February 1, 2022 Eric Eugene Bates, 31, of Union, passed away on Tues- day, Feb. 1, 2022, at his resi- dence. A memorial service will be held at a later time. Eric was born on Nov. 2, 1990, in La Grande, Oregon, to Eugene and Carla (Thomp- son) Bates. He was raised in Union and graduated from Union High School. Dorothy “Jean” (Ledridge) Dillon November 25, 1925 – January 31, 2022 Dorothy “Jean” Dillon, age 96, of Island City, died Jan. 31, 2022, at her home. At her request there will be no public services at this time. Jean was born on Nov. 25, 1925, the daughter of Samuel Owen and Princess (Bond) Ledridge in La Grande. She graduated from La Grande High School with the class of 1943. On Sept. 4, 1945, she married Vernon Dolph Dillon in Vancouver, Washington. She worked as an of- fice manager for Bonneville Dam until her retirement. They moved to La Grande in 1991, and he preceded her in death in 1993. She attended the La Grande Church of the Nazarene. She was a longtime member of the Quilt Questers and enjoyed quilting. She also enjoyed rock mining and spending time with her nieces and nephews. Survivors include her brother, Jim Ledridge of Lake Oswego; niece and caregiver, Cody and James Eby of Island City; and nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by brother, Samuel Ledridge, and sister, June Gibson. Joan Frances Johnson June 26, 1930 - January 30, 2022 Joan Frances Johnson, 91, died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Jan. 30, 2022, at her daughter and son-in-law’s home in Portland. Joan was born on June 26, 1930, in Steubenville, Ohio, to James Harvey and Helen Fran- ces Johnson. She was one of eight children, five girls and three boys. She is survived by her sister, Eliz- abeth Justine; her children, Victoria Jassenoff, Colleen and Jeff John- son, Steve Tillotson, and Rhonda Pehrson; grandchildren, Matthew Jassenoff, Michael Tillotson, Ra- chel Pehrson, Cody Pehrson and Cassidy Pehrson; and great-grandchildren, Sonny Pehrson and Lincoln Tillotson. Joan moved to Long Beach, California, in 1944 with her family and graduated from St. Anthony’s High School in 1948. She at- tended nurse’s training at Orange County Hospital and subsequently spent her career in the medical profession. She worked in a variety of medical settings, including laboratory and X-ray departments and five years in obstetrics and traumatic medicine in Big Bear Lake, California. In 1966 she took a position at Bristol Park Medical Group in Costa Mesa, California, and re- mained there for 29 years. She started as a part-time insurance clerk in 1966 and was promoted to office manager in 1970 where she was responsible for the reorganization of the business department. In 1979 she was appointed assistant administrator, a position she held until her retirement in 1995. As assistant administrator she helped to oversee the expansion of BPMG from a single office to a corporation with multiple offices around Southern California. After retirement, Joan moved to La Grande, Oregon, to be closer to her chil- dren. She was actively involved in Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church and various community organizations. She loved dancing, reading mysteries, playing cards and sitting on her porch watching the world go by. Her favorite poem was “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer. She was happiest when surrounded by her family, in particular her grandchildren, whom she adored. She will be greatly missed. Her family plans a celebration of her life in the spring in La Grande, Oregon.
