COFFEE BREAK B6 — THE OBSERVER & BAKER CITY HERALD THuRSDAY, DECEmBER 9, 2021 Divorced dad carries torch 10 years later moved in with other people. I am currently single; she’s still in a relationship. She recently called and asked me for advice because she’s not happy in her current relationship. I have never stopped loving her, but I don’t want to take advantage of her present situa- tion. My kids know how I feel and so do my friends, so she probably does, too. Would it be wrong of me to try to rekindle what we once had, even if there’s the slightest chance of she and her current partner working through their issues? I’m not sure she feels the same way about me as I do her. — TORN IN WISCONSIN DEAR TORN: When your ex-wife called to tell you things aren’t going well between her DEAR ABBY: I am a 45-year-old divorced father of three. Two of them I share with my ex-wife. We were married for 14 years and have been divorced for 10 years now. Our mar- riage started falling apart when I became addicted to prescription pain medication. I was using for a couple of years, but I’m sober now. Our divorce was amicable, and I think we still maintain a great friendship. We call each other occasionally and talk about things other than the kids. After our divorce we both dated and three roommates. In the course of my interview, the screening process to see if I’d be a good fit for the house, I neglected to men- tion that I have a girlfriend. Nat- urally, I’d like to have her see the place, meet my roommates and sleep over, but I also don’t want to ruffle any feathers or be pre- mature in having company over. When would be an appropriate time to have this discussion with them? — PONDERING IN THE PRESIDIO DEAR PONDERING: If you want a good relationship with your roommates, NOW would be a good time to raise the sub- ject. If you do, you may be pleas- antly surprised to find they have no objection. If they did, they should have mentioned some- thing during your interview. family now. Please advise. — HESITANT GRANDMA IN OHIO DEAR HESITANT GRANDMA: I am sorry for the pain you are experiencing regarding your son’s diagnosis. Your husband wants to make the move, and your son has told you he does not want you to change your plans. If it’s financially fea- sible, it might make sense for you and your husband to rent a place in Florida for a year and, depending upon how well your son is doing, decide later if you want to make it permanent. Per- haps your husband could go ahead without you if you choose to stay behind. DEAR ABBY: I have just moved into a room in a shared house. I like the location and my and her current partner, she opened the door to you doing what you are contemplating. If they are not married, you have every right to tell her you have never stopped loving her and ask if she might have similar feel- ings. If she doesn’t, it would be better for you to know that. But if her answer is yes, it would be worth a try. DEAR ABBY: My husband and I always planned on retiring to Florida. Our son, who is mar- ried with children, has been diag- nosed with a slow-progressing but deadly disease. My husband still wants to move, but now I am not sure. Our son said we should live our life because we worked hard to retire and should go. I don’t know if I could be happy that far away from him and his NEWS OF THE WEIRD ‘Cheugy,’ ‘omicron’ among 2021’s most mispronounced words in lost trade. Many news- casters mistook the name of the ship as “Evergreen,” the name of the company that owns the vessel, which was printed on its hull. • Glasgow: The host city of November’s United Nations Climate Confer- ence was mispronounced by both President Joe Biden and former president Barack Obama. • Kelce: The Philadel- phia Eagles center Jason Kelce revealed on radio this year that his teammates and the media had been mis- pronouncing his name for years. • Omicron: A new variant of COVID-19 first identified in November, named in keeping with the World Health Organiza- tion’s system of identifying variants with Greek let- ters. (Touma notes it’s pro- nounced differently in the U.S. and the U.K.) • Shein: The Chinese fast fashion company at the center of the “Shein haul” trend, in which participants record themselves trying on numerous different outfits from the company. • Stefanos Tsitsipas: Cur- rently ranked as the world’s No. 4 tennis player, the Greek athlete rose to inter- national prominence when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the final of the French Open in June. • Yassify: A popular trend in which multiple beauty filters are applied to well-known pictures or por- traits for comic effect. The Associated Press LOS ANGELES — “Cheugy” is apparently a lot to chew on. Grammy Award-winning sing- er-songwriter Billie Eilish and Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce have something in common — broadcasters butcher their names. And virtually everyone is having trouble with “omicron.” All four made it onto this year’s list of most mis- pronounced words as com- piled by the U.S. Cap- tioning Company, which captions and subtitles real- time events on TV and in courtrooms. The list released Tuesday, Dec. 7, identifies the words that proved most challenging for newsreaders and people on television to pronounce this year. The caption company said it surveyed its mem- bers to generate the list, which is now in its sixth year and was commis- sioned by Babbel, a lan- guage-learning platform with headquarters in Berlin and New York. “Newscasters in the U.S. have struggled with 2021′s new words and names while reporting on key sporting events, viral internet trends and emerging celebri- ties,” said Esteban Touma, a standup comedian and teacher for Babbel Live. “As a language teacher, it’s always interesting to see that some of these terms are The Associated Press, File Billie Eilish, the grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, made it onto this year’s list of most mispronounced words as compiled by the U.S. Captioning Company, which captions and subtitles real-time events on TV and in courtrooms. usually new colloquialisms, or are rooted or borrowed from another language,” he said. “As a non-na- tive speaker, I must con- fess it’s fun to see English speakers stumbling a bit for a change.” Here’s how Touma breaks down the proper pronunciations for the most commonly misspoken words: • Cheugy: A trendy term sugar and baking soda, pop- ularized in Netflix’s “Squid Game.” (Touma notes that some speakers seem to pro- duce a ”K” instead of the ”G” in the middle syllable.) • Dogecoin: A divisive cryptocurrency that began somewhat ironically before being popularized by Elon Musk, causing its value to dramatically increase. • Eilish: The singer Billie Eilish, whose album popularized by Gen Z and used to mock an outdated and unfashionable aesthetic typically associated with millennials, such as “Live, Laugh, Love” signs. • Chipotle : The Amer- ican fast food chain became the center of a viral trend this year challenging Baby Boomers to pronounce the name. • Dalgona: A Korean treat made with melted weather | Go to AccuWeather.com “Happier Than Ever” was released this year to crit- ical acclaim and nominated for the Grammy Awards’ Album of the Year. • Ethereum: Another cryptocurrency that sky- rocketed in value this year amid the decentralized-cur- rency boom. • Ever Given: The name of the ship that blocked the Suez Canal in March, costing billions of dollars AROUND OREGON AND THE REGION Astoria Longview 39/47 Kennewick 38/46 St. Helens 37/47 TIllamook 38/48 39/49 39/47 36/48 Condon FRI Cloudy with a bit of snow Cloudy with fl urries Baker City 22 36 23 Comfort Index™ La Grande 2 0 3 0 38 29 Eugene 37 33 39 34 41 32 0 1 3 38 31 42 33 0 0 3 ALMANAC NATION (for the 48 contiguous states) High Tuesday Low Tuesday High: 86° Low: -22° Wettest: 0.42” 34° 30° 44° 33° 44° 36° PRECIPITATION (inches) Tuesday Month to date Normal month to date Year to date Normal year to date 0.00 0.06 0.20 5.07 8.41 Trace 0.08 0.49 10.06 16.01 0.34 0.60 0.97 22.64 23.15 AGRICULTURAL INFO.
