JOSEPH — Saturday, June 5, Wallowology kicks off its summer activities with a field trip hike in Joseph Canyon led by ecologist David Mildrexler, PhD. Ison House concert series begins Saturday Music and movies in the park — free this summer BAKER CITY — This summer, the Ison House Bed & Brew will hold concerts on the lawn. The first is Saturday, June 5, featuring Eric “Sugar” Larsen. Gates open at 4 p.m. The house band Trailer Hitch plays at 6 p.m., followed by Larsen at 7:30 p.m. The music wraps up by 9:30 p.m. LA GRANDE — The Riverside Concert Series returns this sum- mer beginning July 1. Enjoy free live music from local artists in the park every Thursday from 6-8 p.m., rain or shine (if the weather is bad, the concert will move to inside the pavilion). The series is organized by La Grande Parks and Recreation and sponsored by the La Grande Arts Commission. The summer’s lineup will be announced soon. At Pioneer Park this summer — also free, thanks to Parks and Rec and the Union County Safe Communities Coalition — watch movies outside with family and friends. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks (remember to pack out what you bring in). The Friday night movies begin July 9 with “Robin Hood,” and “Onward” will be shown July 30. “Doolittle” winds up the trio of free movies in the park on Aug. 20. The mission is the same — pro- moting and celebrating pioneer skills and lost arts — but presented in a thoroughly modern format. June 1-4, a pioneer artist walks viewers through a prerecorded demonstration. The live broadcast each evening begins at 6 p.m. Nickie Sanchez (Custom Cre- ations by Nickie, San Diego, Cali- fornia) on Tuesday demonstrated patchwork sewing, hand-piecing nine-patch placemats using the card trick block, and on Wednesday, Andy Boyd (Boyd Blacksmithing, Lostine) pounded out rosehead clinch nails. Thursday’s broadcast features Justin Riley (Riley River Forge, Walla Walla) who prepares a hide for tanning and then tans a hide using brains. David Spurlock (YouTube’s “Hanging with Dave” and Little River Forge, Mountain View, Arkansas) on Friday shows how to find plants in your own backyard for medicinal and food use.
