Meetings
• COVE — A regular meeting of
the Cove City Council will be held
Tuesday, June 1, at 7 p.m. at Cove City
Hall, 504 Alder St. The public may
attend the meeting virtually. The
agenda and instructions are available
at www.cityofcove.org, or email a
request to cityadmin@cityofcove.org.
The agenda includes presentations
on this summer’s Cove Cherry Fair and
discussion and approval of the city
budget. Written public comment may
be emailed to cityadmin@cityofcove.
org before 6:45 p.m. the night of the

• IMBLER — A special session of the
Imbler School District Board of Direc-
tors begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 1,
in Room 1 of the high school to dis-
cuss the appointment of an interim
superintendent.
• LA GRANDE — The Union County
Democratic Party will meet virtu-
ally Wednesday, June 2, beginning
at 7 p.m. To register for the Zoom
meeting, email your contact infor-

• LA GRANDE — The city of La Grande
Urban Renewal District Budget Com-
mittee will hold a hearing Wednesday,
June 2, beginning at 6 p.m. Following
the hearing will be a general budget
committee hearing, a regular session
of the Urban Renewal Agency and
a regular session of the La Grande
City Council. The consecutive meet-

Pauline “Ann” Steele,
75, of La Grande, died
May 3, 2021, at Grande
Ronde Retire-
ment
Residence.
Known as
Ann, she was
born June 17,
1945, in Morehead City,
North Carolina, to Thomas
Pickett and Pauline Glee
(Crump) Gillikin.
She married Thomas
Glenn Steele in Virginia
Beach on May 16, 1961.
Ann and Thomas had four
children and had a loving
and adventurous marriage.
Thomas passed away in
October 2019.
Ann loved being with
friends and family and
especially loved being a
grandmother. She enjoyed
singing karaoke, telling
stories and being outdoors.
She surely had the “gift of
gab.”
Ann worked as an
insurance agent in La
Grande for many years and
enjoyed working with the
public. Her friendly, out-
going attitude made her
many friends and she will
be missed greatly.
Surviving relatives
include her children, Wil-
liam Steele, David Steele,
Connie Carter and Patti
Steele, and grandchildren
and great-grandchildren.

of 26th Street for a dis-
turbance and explained
options.
11:42 a.m. — The Union
County Sheriff ’s Offi ce
received a call about a bur-
glary at Howell’s Nursery,
10707 S. Walton Road,
Island City. A deputy
responded and took a
report.
2:53 p.m. — A caller
reported baby goats were
loose at Second and Patton
streets, La Grande. An
animal enforcement offi cer
contacted their owner to
round up the kids.
3:24 p.m. — La Grande
police took a report for
identity theft and explained
options to the victim.
4:17 p.m. — A caller
reported a disturbance
on the 1200 block of Hill
Street, Cove. A Union
County sheriff ’s deputy
responded and counseled
the parties involved.
4:52 p.m. — The Union
County Sheriff ’s Offi ce
received a report of the
theft of guns from the
56700 block of Lowell
Road, Union. A deputy
made contact and took
down information.
6:49 p.m. — A resident
on Dove Road, La Grande,
reported a dog bit a person,
who went to a hospital
emergency department.

10:34 p.m. — La
Grande police responded
to Mamacita’s Interna-
tional Grill, 2003 Fourth
St., La Grande, on a report
of a disturbance. Offi cers
escorted a person from the
business.

12:02 a.m. — A res-
ident on the 700 block
of South Second Street,
Union, called for assis-
tance for a person causing
a disturbance and refusing
to leave. A Union County
sheriff ’s deputy responded
and arrested a 30-year-old
woman for trespass.
6:55 a.m. — A Union
County sheriff ’s deputy
responded to a residence
on the 200 block of Second
Street, North Powder, and
took a report for a burglary.
10:31 a.m. — La Grande
police responded to the
2000 block of Fourth Street
for a disturbance. Offi -
cers separated the parties
involved.
2:53 p.m. — Oregon
State Police received a
report of a domestic distur-
bance on Interstate 84 near
milepost 272.
5:42 p.m. — La Grande
police responded to Max
Square for a disturbance.
An offi cer counseled the
party.
9:25 p.m. — La Grande
police responded to a resi-
dence on the 1500 block of
21st Street on a call about a
possible stalking situation.
Police arrested Sean Robert
Stellings, 26, for a stalking
order violation.
10:47 p.m. — A Union
County sheriff ’s deputy
responded to a residence in
Elgin for a person threat-
ening self-harm. The
deputy gave the person a
courtesy ride.

for all ages.
The Summer Reading
Program kicks off Monday,
June 14. This year’s theme
is “Reading Colors Your
World.” We have program
tracks for children, teens
and adults. Register at

gram will conclude Aug.
6. This year we’re giving
away lanyards to those
who want to keep track of
the badges they earn with
corresponding buttons.

Book Clubs. Teen activi-
ties include a photo scav-
enger hunt, bingo cards
and monthly Take & Make

DIY activities in the
library in June will fea-
ture a tissue paper fl ower
craft, I Spy display, mosaic
sticker mural and a Wings
of Color photo back-
drop. Adults may enter a
drawing for a prize basket,
one ticket per book read.

A new book will be
installed along the River-
side Greenway: “Maybe
Something Beautiful” by
Isabel F. Campoy, based
on the true story of the
Urban Art Trail in San
Diego.
Tangled Tiles craft
kits for teens and adults
include a pen, a ceramic
tile and design inspira-
tion. These Take & Make
kits will be available for
pickup starting Monday,
June 7.
Children’s Book Box
registration for July and
August will be open soon.
Book boxes contain library
books plus treats to keep.
Oregon Battle of the
Books selections for
2021-22 are available.
OBOB is open to students
grades 3-12 through local
