Briefs Little League parade canceled LA GRANDE — The La Grande Little League season is underway, but the annual parade in downtown La Grande will not be held. The Little League board voted to cancel the parade as it could create COVID-19 concerns “and we just want the kids to play without their season being aff ected,” according to a press release. Police sepa- rated the parties. 10:10 a.m. — A caller reported criminal mischief on the 2400 block of Riddle Road, La Grande. A Union County sheriff ’s deputy made contact and took a report. 1:33 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff ’s Offi ce received a report of a dog on the loose in the area of Island and Monroe avenues, La Grande. An animal enforcement offi cer responded but did not fi nd the dog. 2:22 p.m. — A caller reported fi nding a dog at Benton Park, La Grande. An animal enforce- ment offi cer responded and took the dog to the Blue Mountain Humane Association, La Grande. 3:34 p.m. — A caller reported a dog on the loose at Third Street and D Avenue, La Grande. Dispatch advised the animal enforcement offi cer. 3:58 p.m. — A caller complained about dogs at large in the area of West Arch and North 10th streets, Union. Then the owner called in so say they were picking up the dogs. 4:10 p.m. — And one more call about a dog. This time a caller reported fi nding a dog on the 1600 block of Alder Street, La Grande. An animal enforcement offi cer responded and returned the dog to its owner. 6:26 p.m. — La Grande police received a report of people being careless with all-terrain vehicles at O Avenue and Cherry Street, La Grande. An offi cer responded, found the juveniles at their home and counseled them. 10:20 p.m. — La Grande police responded to the 1500 block of 21st Street on a report of a disturbance. Offi cers resolved the situation. SATURDAY, MAY 22 6:26 a.m. — A caller reported a dog at large in the area of 63200 Highway 203, La Grande. 7:37 a.m. — Yes, another report of a dog on the loose, this one in the area of Sixth Street and O Avenue, La Grande. 10:03 a.m. — A caller reported animal abuse at a location in Elgin. An animal enforce- ment offi cer contacted the caller and took information. 10:19 a.m. — The Union County Sher- iff ’s Offi ce received a report of goats at large on Courtney Lane, Sum- merville. An animal enforcement offi cer con- tacted the owner about the goats. 4:21 p.m. — A caller complained about a dog at Riverside Park, La Grande. An animal enforcement offi cer took information. 8:07 p.m. — A caller reported a possible vio- lation of a no-contact order on the 1400 block of X Avenue, La Grande. An offi cer responded and arrested Katherine Danielle Ibarra, 39, for violating a no-contact order. 9:40 p.m. — A caller reported a suspicious person near the Dollar Tree at the La Grande Town Center, 2212 Island Ave., La Grande. Local students earn academic distinction KADEN MCCLURE, ELGIN ELGIN — William Kaden McClure, son of William Kirt and Misty McClure, was awarded a $2,500 renewable scholar- ship (total value $10,000) by Boise Cascade. The Elgin High School student plans to attend George Fox Univer- sity as a pre-med student and to pursue a career in pediatric cardiology. According to a press release, Kaden has been involved in sports and many after-school orga- nizations and has learned the value of working on a team and living a healthy lifestyle. MADDISON HARVEY, ELGIN UNION COUNTY — Maddison Harvey, Elgin High School, has been selected as the recipient of the 2021-2022 Union County PEO Tri-Chapter Scholarship. This $3,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior girl who will be attending Eastern Oregon University. Scholarship applications are evaluated for academic achievement, community service, fi nan- cial need and commitment to higher education. The scholarship is funded by the three local chapters of PEO, a philan- thropic organization ded- icated to the education of women. An offi cer determined the call was unfounded. 11:56 a.m. — La Grande police responded to the 2200 block of Gekeler Lane for a two-vehicle collision. Offi cers took a report. 3:22 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff ’s Offi ce Search and Rescue Team received a report of two children, ages 6 and 9, who had become sep- arated from their family off of the U.S. Forest Ser- vice 4305 Road west of Ladd Canyon, and the family’s search for them had been unsuccessful. Patrol deputies, search and rescue and Forest Service law enforcement responded. The SAR team reported the chil- dren found their way out to the family’s vehicle just prior to units arriving on scene. The team on its Facebook page reminded adults to talk to children about what to do if you get separated and make sure they are prepared with appropriate clothing and a signaling device, such as a whistle. 7:13 p.m. — A caller reported juveniles caused a disturbance on the 600 block of Elm Street, Cove. A Union County sheriff ’s deputy responded and took a report. Bett y V. (Williams) Alam 1924-2021 • La Grande Betty Verle Alam, 96, of La Grande, died May 18, 2021, at her home. Betty was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Silverton to Arthur B. and Hallie D. (George) Williams. She graduated from Silverton High School. Betty loved crocheting, tatting, knitting and sewing. She enjoyed the out- doors, four-wheeling and snowmobiling. Surviving relatives include her children and their spouses, John and Kim Satterlee of Ana- cortes, Washington, and Karen and Dennis Fenn of La Grande; two grand- children; and three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Bryant December 9, 1938 - December 3, 2020 Celebration of life will be held Sunday, May 30, 2021 beginning at NOON, Irish Wake style at the ranch. Dinner will be ready - bring a dish if you’d like. Marion was born Dec. 9, 1938 at home in Prince- ton, Ca. and passed Dec 3, 2020 home at the ranch where he wanted. Marlon graduated from Princeton High School in 1957. He was a supply sergeant in the National Guard for two years. He married Susie Roper in Reno, NV. Their meeting happened when he was dating her boss and one day, she was busy and suggested that Marlon and Susie go out instead and that was that. Marlon lived in Princeton for the first part of his life and then in Lostine in Eastern Oregon. He spent the rest of his life on his ranch in Elgin. He worked for Boise Cascade as a millwright (or millwrong as he put it) for 30+ years until he retired to the ranch with Carmie Bunde who loved it as much as he did. Marlon loved to hunt. He had elk camp with a special group of guys. His love of hunting even took him up to Canada where he bagged a moose and a lifelong friend Mary Dirkatch. He fished, went to the coast for tuna and loved being with the coast crew. He loved Nascar and rodeo and attended Pendleton Round-Up for 50 years, “Let ‘er Buck”. He did a lot of gardening and tree farming and hunting and just watching the wildlife. He loved and celebrated St Patty’s Day and Memorial Day in the spring. He would love to be remembered for: his Children, his Grandchildren, family and the Ranch he created for all, and for his love for all people. If he wasn’t your friend you hadn’t met him yet. Marlon loved 3 women in his life - Susie Roper, Mary Dirkatch and Carmie Bunde. With Susie he had 4 children; 2 daugh- ters, Lani Russell and Katherine Carradine and two boys; Juvi Bryant (deceased early), and Rowy Bryant. Marlon’s parents were Robert “Duke” and Jessie O (Chandley) Bryant. His grandpar- ents: Wesley and Henrietta (Franks) Bryant, Bert and Tina (Williams) Chandley. He is survived by his brother Dwace; his daughers Katherine and Lani; his son Rowy and 4 beautiful grandchildren; Jessie, Faith, Beulah and Haven. He was preceded in death and will be welcomed by three brothers; Brenhard, Rymun, and Lennard who died at birth; one sister, Sandra, who died young, both of his parents; one son and all of his grand- parents; his two wives, Susie and Carmie; many friends and his beloved pets Grik (a border collie who rounded up the kids) and a parrot, Jojo, who rounded up the grand- kids.
