■ Baker City art center’s April open show

BAKER CITY — Patrons are
invited to check out the newest art
exhibit at Crossroads Carnegie Art
Center for April’s open theme show.
This year’s theme is “Puzzle.”
The show drew 44 entries.
Artists were encouraged to cre-
ate works that related to the theme
in some way.
Some are literal interpretations,
such as art created from actual
puzzle pieces.
Others offer a more abstract
view of the theme, such as a tran-
quil landscape where one may go to
puzzle out a problem.
“From the medium to the subject
matter to abstract thinking,”
Crystal Rainwater, community
art director, described the display.
“Some are straightforward; some
you have to puzzle at.”
Paul Hoelscher, for instance, used
a background of crossword puzzles
for his mixed media entries.
Pam Bingham’s ceramic eggs
offer an age-old puzzle: Which came
fi rst — the chicken or the egg?
Nancy Coffelt created three
different pieces under the head-
ing of “Stories Are How We Solve
Puzzles.”
The show opened Friday, April 2.
Patrons at the First Friday opening
reception voted on their favorite for
the People’s Choice award.
“Puzzle Bench” by Michael Mey-
er — a bench created out of large
wooden puzzle pieces — snagged
fi rst in the contest.
Second place went to “Four
Seasons by Four Artists,” a col-
laborative painting created by
Patti Burrows, Vicki Maddox, Ann
Eriksmoen and Pat VanAlstyne.
Third place was “Frogger” by
Tera Taylor.
