Crawford J. ‘C.J.’ Bryan
1935-2021 • La Grande
Crawford John Bryan,
85, of La Grande, died
March 13 at his residence.
Known as C.J., he was
born June 13, 1935, in Tali-
hina, Oklahoma, the fi fth
of fi ve sons born to Dick
and Bernice
“Sissie” Bryan.
He graduated
from Talihina
High School
in 1953 and
Oklahoma
State Univer-
sity in 1961,
with a bach-
elor’s degree
in forestry. He
served in the
U.S. Air Force from 1954 to
1957.
C.J. worked in many
locations throughout the
West with the U.S. Forest
Service and the Bureau of
Indian Aff airs, with a short
assignment to Humboldt
State University in Arcata,
California. He also worked
for the Oklahoma Division
of Forestry. In addition to
fi eld forester positions, he
had many administrative
assignments, the last being
Agency Superintendent,
BIA, Bethel, Alaska. After
retiring from the federal ser-
vice in 1992, C.J. worked as
a private consulting forester
with various Alaska Native
corporations throughout the
state until 2001, when he
retired to La Grande.
C.J. was a proud member
of the Choctaw Nation of
Oklahoma. His mother,
Sissie Pitchlynn, was an
original Dawes Commis-
sion enrollee of the tribe. He
was on the founding board
of directors of the American
Indian Science and Engi-
neering Society.
C.J. was a long-time vol-
unteer in the various com-
munities where he lived,
such as Little League
baseball coach, girls soft-
ball coach, school board
member, parish council
member, volunteer coun-
selor, Meals on Wheels
deliverer, Books for Seniors
deliverer, volunteer cook
and meal server. He was
a member of La Grande
Masonic Lodge #41, Union
Royal Arch Masonry, Baker
Valley Scottish Rite and the
Ecclesia Gnostica church
of Portland, a church of the
ancient gnostic tradition.
C.J. particularly enjoyed
hiking mountain trails with
his wife, Marian, and dog,
Choc, and being outdoors
where he felt closest to the
creator.
Surviving relatives
include his children,
Melissa Miller of Lakeside,
Arizona, Laurinda Bryan of
Eureka, California, Rebecca
Crook of McKinleyville,
California, Summer Bryan
of La Grande, Peter Bryan
of Pendleton, Debe Boston
of Eureka, California, and
Michael Bryan of Pend-
leton; brother, James Bryan
of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and
nine grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; brothers,
Richard, George and Billy
Joe; and wife, Marian
Goldberg.

Raymond K. Duggins,
82, of Cove, died March 15
at his residence. A grave-
side service will be held at
the Cove Cem-
etery March
18 at 2 p.m.

Raymond was born Dec.
3, 1938, in Corn, Okla-
homa, to Loy and Goldie

married to Shirley Ann
Clark for 62 years.
Raymond was a
mechanic, but he loved
woodworking and building
furniture the most.
Surviving relatives
include his wife, Shirley;

Cheri and Scott Doren
of Cove, Raymond K. Jr.
and Candy Duggins of
Nevada, and Cliff ord Dug-
gins of Oklahoma; and three
grandchildren.

Grant G. Tsiatsos
1952-2021 • Starkey
Grant Gregory Tsiatsos,
68, of Starkey, died March
6 at a local care facility. A
memorial service will be
held at the family ceme-
tery in Starkey sometime in
June.
Grant was
born June 30,
1952, in La
Grande, to
Gregory and
Doris (Gray)
Tsiatsos. He
attended Central Elemen-
tary School, the Imnaha
one-room school, La
Grande Middle School and
La Grande High School. He
married Christy Barklow
and they became the par-
ents of twins. They later
divorced.
Grant worked with his
father on ranches in Union
and Wallowa counties,
feeding and calving 650
cows for several winters.
He also worked at a bronze
foundry in Joseph. He
would bring his dog, Teddy,
with him every day. Veryl
Goodrite, the artist who cre-
ated the “Freedom Horses”
bronze work, insisted they
put Teddy’s pawprint on that
bronze. Grant later went
to work for ODOT at Sea-

saw juveniles on the railroad tracks
at Pioneer Park and warned them for
trespassing.
2:56 p.m. — A caller at the Cottage
Inn, 2116 Adams Ave., La Grande,
asked to speak to an offi cer regarding
a civil issue. An offi cer made contact
and explained options.
7:41 p.m. — A caller reported a
cow was at large in the area of Hunter
Road and Woodell Lane, La Grande.
Someone found the cow and placed it
inside a fence.
9:34 p.m. — A La Grande resident
reported telephonic harassment. An
offi cer responded and took a report.
Tuesday, March 16
10:23 a.m. — A resident on the
900 block of Dogwood Street, Elgin,
reported a possible burglary. A Union
County sheriff ’s deputy responded
and took information.
3:41 p.m. — The Union County
Sheriff ’s Offi ce responded to a report
of a fi ght on the 11600 block of Island
Avenue, Island City, and arrested
Steven Michael McBride, 39, for
fourth-degree assault.
Wednesday, March 17
3:56 a.m. — La Grande police
responded to a report of suspicious
circumstances on the 300 block
of 12th Street and arrested Steven
James Parker Jr., 24, of La Grande,
for driving under the infl uence of
intoxicants.
Recent Oregon State Police
activity
March 9, 3:07 p.m. — An Oregon
State Police trooper stopped a Mit-
subishi Eclipse Cross for speeding
on the eastbound side of Interstate
84 near milepost 278. The trooper
subsequently arrested the driver,
Jesus Martinez, 38, for DUII (con-
trolled substances).
March 11, 11:05 a.m. — A traffi c
stop for speeding on I-84 near La
Grande ended with an arrest and the
seizure of 9.3 grams of psilocybin
mushrooms and seven LSD tabs.

Around a quarter of Wal-
lowa County has received a
vaccine against COVID-19
through Wallowa Memorial
Hospital, according to the
latest numbers from WMH
Communications Director
Brooke Pace.
And the speed with
which vaccines are being
doled out has allowed the
county to get further down
the waitlist.
“We have been able to
move into Group 7, the
essential workers and people
under 45 (with underlying
conditions),” Pace said.
At WMH’s most recent
clinic on Tuesday, March
16, it gave out about 450
doses of the vaccine. Of
that, 205 were fi rst doses
of the Moderna vaccines,
145 were second doses and
100 were the new one-
dose Johnson & Johnson
vaccine.
“Some of those people
were in the age sequencing
that had passed up to this
date (on getting vacci-
nated),” Pace said of those

bound side of I-84 near milepost
262, according to state police, and
during the contact with the driver
smelled marijuana.
The trooper obtained consent
to search the car and found the

driver, Faith Emi Zarbock, 19, of
South Jordan, Utah, for possession
of both.
State police also took the drugs
to the La Grande Police Department
for eventual destruction.
March 12, 1:07 p.m. — An
Oregon State Police trooper stopped
a vehicle heading west on I-84 near
milepost 265 for failing to maintain
a lane. During the stop, according to
state police, the passenger tossed a
burning cigarette out of the window.

but gave the passenger, William
Raymond Reynolds, 30, of Mount
Vernon, Washington, a citation for
off ensive littering and throwing
burning material from a vehicle.

Grant was a kind, gentle
man. He loved his family
and friends. He enjoyed
snowmobiling and went on
yearly trips with a couple
of friends he met while
working at ODOT in Sea-
side. He liked laying tile and
did beautiful work for his
mother and father’s home.
Surviving relatives
include his children, Chris-
topher of Lostine and
Deena and husband, Daren,
of Etna, California; parents,
Greg and Doris Tsiatsos of
Starkey; sister and broth-
er-in-law, Sharon and Fred
