An offi cer took a report. 2 p.m. — La Grande police responded to the 1500 block of Adams Avenue for a disturbance. An offi cer explained options. 2:54 p.m. — La Grande residents on the 200 block of Sixth Street reported theft of mail. 4:59 p.m. — A resi- dent on the 700 block of Alder Street, Elgin, asked the Union County Sher- iff’s Offi ce to provide extra patrol due to vandalism. 6:39 p.m. — Union County sheriff’s deputies responded to a disturbance at a residence on the 200 block of North Main Street, Union, and cited one juvenile. 11:29 p.m. — La Grande police responded to a civil disturbance on the 400 block of Division Avenue. Recent Oregon State Police activity March 2, 3:28 p.m. — An Oregon State Police trooper stopped a Honda Civic heading west on Interstate 84 near milepost 278 for not having visible plates or a temporary reg- istration sticker. During the stop, according to OSP, the THE OBSERVER — 3A OBITUARIES Dorothy M. Hunt 1925-2021 • La Grande Dorothy M. Hunt, 95, of La Grande, died March 3 at her home. At her request there will not be a public service. Private burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Baker City. Arrangements are by Dan- iels-Knopp Funeral, Cre- mation & Life Celebration Center, La Grande. Dorothy was born April 19, 1925, in Portland, to Herbert E. and Sybil A. (Carpenter) Hunt. The J.R. Hunt and U.S. Car- penter families were early settlers in Baker Valley. Dorothy was raised and attended school in Portland and Baker City, graduating from Baker High School in 1944. Following high school, Dorothy joined the Cadet Nurse Corps. She com- pleted the nursing program at Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Spokane, Washington, and a nursing degree program at the Uni- versity of Washington. In 1953 she served two years of active duty in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, stationed at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Denver, Colorado. After her tour of duty with the Army, Dorothy returned to the Puget Sound area in Washington and was employed by the U.S. Veterans Administration. She worked at V.A. Med- ical Centers in Seattle and Tacoma until her retirement in 1982. In 1988 Dorothy moved from the Puget Sound area back to Eastern Oregon, settling in La Grande. She enjoyed outdoor activi- ties, crafts, traveling and volunteer work. She was a member of the Presbyte- rian Church and the Grande Ronde Hospital Auxiliary. Surviving relatives include her nephews, Mark Masterson of La Grande and Glen Masterson and wife, Nancy, of Arizona and Michigan. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Masterson. Memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of one’s choice. Mike was a kind and gentle soul. The stag- gering loss is bearable only because we had him in our lives, albeit for too short of a time. Surviving relatives include his parents, Ralph “Chris” and Elisia Dunn of Moselle, Mississippi; brothers and sisters-in-law, Brandon and Melanie Dunn of Missoula, Montana, and Kaylon and Amanda Dunn of Niceville, Florida; and sister, Heather Little of Pueblo, Colorado. Paxton 1932-2021 • Union Michael “Mike” Chris- topher Dunn, 21, of La Grande, died Feb. 21 at his residence. A service will be held at a later time. Known as Mike, he was born July 13, 1999, in Hermiston, to Ralph and Elisia (Walters) Dunn. He resided in La Grande and graduated from La Grande High School. Mike was employed with Northwood Manufacturing. He enjoyed woodworking, gaming, model building, hunting, fi shing, shooting and spending time with friends and family. William Charles “Bill” Paxton, 88, of Union, died Feb. 26 at a retirement com- munity in Baker City. A service will be held at a later time. Arrangements are by Daniels-Knopp Funeral, Cremation & Life Celebration Center, La Grande. Known as Bill, he was born July 8, 1932, in La Grande, to Charles Wil- liam and Jennie Belle (Tracy) Paxton. He was raised and educated in Elgin and Union, graduating from Union High School in 1950. Bill joined the U.S. Air Force and served most of his enlistment in Germany as a teletypist. After his honorable discharge in 1955 as a senior staff sergeant, he went to the Portland Radio and TV College and earned an associate degree. In 1956 he married Ann Schmidt in Portland. Ann died in 1988 after 32 years of mar- riage. In 1990 Bill married Betty “Betsy” Anderson in Union. Bill worked as a man- ager and technician in tele- vision and cable installa- tion and repair. He designed and installed the fi rst cable system in La Grande, Baker City and Hood River and also in Oroville, Cali- fornia. He also worked on the family ranch and ran the Pebble in Union. Bill was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars High Valley Post #4060 and the Oregon Defense League. He was an honorary member of FFA and received the FFA State Farm Award. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fi shing, mushrooming, huckleberry picking, gardening, any- thing out of doors. He also enjoyed model ship building and was an avid reader. Surviving relatives include his wife of 31 years, Betsy of Union; children and spouses, Wayne and Julie Paxton of Baker City, Bonnie and Gary Baxter of Baker City, and Donna Moss of Camas, Wash- ington; stepson and spouse, Steve and Faith Courtney of Union; nine grandchil- dren; and nine great-grand- trooper smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle. The driver, Matthew M. Keller, 33, of Spokane, Washington, did poorly on sobriety tests. The trooper arrested Keller for driving under the infl uence of intoxicants (controlled sub- stance) and booked him into jail in Union County. March 3, 12:57 a.m. — An Oregon State Police trooper responded to driving complaints about a Mercedes heading west on Interstate 84 near mile- post 273. The trooper caught up to the car near milepost 263 then pulled it over, according to state police. The driver, Her- bert Charles Byrd, failed sobriety tests, and the trooper booked him into the Union County Correc- tional Facility, La Grande, for DUII (alcohol). Michael C. March 13 — LORI GREENWAY: 3 p.m. Claytie L. ‘Lori’ (Nickell) Greenway 1959-2021 • Joseph Claytie Lorraine “Lori” Greenway, 61, of Joseph, died Jan. 10 at her home. A memorial service will be held March 13 at 3 p.m. at the Enterprise First Baptist Church. Arrangements are by Bollman Funeral Home, Enterprise. Known as Lori, she was born Dec. 2, 1959, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Wil- liam and Joy (Thorn) Nickell. The family lived in Joseph when she was a young child and her father was a Wallowa Lake Park ranger. Lori never forgot this special place. After spending nearly a decade in California and giving birth to four children, in 1985 Lori returned to Wallowa County with then-husband Pat Lynn and their children. Lori worked more than 30 years for the U.S. Forest Service in engineering and timber and retired at the end of 2019. On July 17, 1999, Lori married Perry Greenway in Enterprise, followed by an outdoor reception at Wal- lowa Lake. Together they enjoyed barbecues, fre- quent family gatherings, walks with their dogs, the mountains, road trips and camping. Lori loved photography, the outdoors, music and dancing. Over the years she traveled to all ends of the state to watch her grand- children and their team- mates compete in sports. She was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Enterprise. Lori had a huge heart and her door was always open. She was a thoughtful listener who didn’t judge others. She had a sharp sense of humor and kept those around her laughing with her quick wit and twinkling smile. After being diagnosed with ocular cancer two years ago and losing an eye, Lori showed her great ability to make lemonades from lemons by sporting an eye patch and creating pirate fun with her family and friends. Lori and Perry made many long treks to Portland for treatment and found time to enjoy the Oregon Coast together. They also took a long road trip with their dogs to visit loved ones last summer. Though she fought val- iantly to the end, treatments proved unsuccessful. Perry remained her faithful care- giver, aided by her chil- dren and her brother, Bill Nickell. Surviving relatives include her husband, Perry Greenway; daughter and son-in-law, Mandy and Joe Nelson of Enterprise; son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Mellissa Lynn of Joseph; sons, Michael Lynn and Patrick James Lynn of Enterprise and Max Gre- enway of Umatilla; mother, Joy Thorn of Joseph; sis- ters, Carole Parrish, Debbie Campbell and Lisa Kinkaid; brother, Bill Nickell; seven grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, William Ray Nickell Sr.; daughter, Tracy Lynn; and brothers, Kevin and Kenny Nickell.
