OPB Oregon Experience episode
“Oregon’s Black Pioneers.” Watch
the 30-minute episode at www.
watch.opb.org/video/oregons-black-
pioneers-zxzlwp/, then attend the
free virtual Brown Bag at noon
Tuesday and join in the conversa-
tion, hosted by the Josephy Center.
Here’s what OPB says about the
episode: “Long before Oregon be-
came a state, black people were in
the Far West. Some were brought
to the region as slaves, but many
others arrived as freemen looking
for a new life. They opened board-
ing houses and stores, worked
farms and mined for gold. But as
more white settlers arrived over
the Oregon Trail, the newcomers
passed discriminatory laws to keep
African Americans out. Oregon
Experience examines the largely
unknown history of Oregon’s black
pioneers.”
Writing workshop focuses
on joy as a source
ENTERPRISE — Fishtrap is
hosting a virtual two-day writing
workshop, “Writing for Resil-
ience: Finding and Using Joy as a
Source,” led by Perrin Kerns.
The workshop is now scheduled
to take place on consecutive Sat-
urdays, March 13 and 20, from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
According to Kerns, “Following
in the tradition of Ross Gay, we
will focus on writing about joy in
the midst of pandemic, protest,
climate change, and solitude. This
is a generative writing class, where
most of our time will be spent writ-
ing to prompts. At the end of our
time together, we will share pieces
we have pulled together from our
shorter writings, and thus explore
the lyric essay as a celebration of
the fragment and the collage.”
Be safe, wear masks,
stay distanced: we will
get through this.
Thank you. Mae
