Celebrate a world of color at First Friday
■ Art shows open March 5 in Baker City
BAKER CITY — As spring
slowly approaches in Eastern
Oregon, the March art shows at
Baker City galleries are celebrating
a world full of color.
Prepare for spring’s arrival at
participating galleries during the
March 5 First Friday art walk in
downtown Baker City.
Crossroads Carnegie
Art Center
Patrons are invited to join
Crossroads Carnegie Art Center
on March 5 to see “A Cacophony
of Color” — the creative linocuts,
oil paintings, and silk screens of
Laurel Macdonald.
For First Friday, the art center,
2020 Auburn, will be open from 10
a.m. to 8 p.m. After 5 p.m., enter
through the door facing Second
Street.
At the door, sign in and sign up
for a gift certifi cate drawing (this
month’s prize is $25 to Peterson’s
Chocolates).
The March exhibit is sponsored
by Ace Nursery.
Like many others, Laurel Mac-
donald always looks forward to
the arrival of spring. The rebirth of
color after a long and dreary gray
winter acts as a balm for her eyes
and her spirit. She anticipates to be
inspired outside with the variety
of shapes, colors and textures that
nature offers, especially during the
global pandemic.
Growing up on a dairy farm with
six sisters in the Boise Valley, her
inspiration is directly tied to the
land, plants and activities.
Sustaining the connection with
the land and each other, Macdonald
has plenty of material to inspire
her: the tangled relationship with
her sisters, the diverse landscapes
of Idaho and those fi shing, biking
and kayaking amongst the scene.
Macdonald has been drawing
fl owers for years and also grows
her inspiration in her own garden.
To view scheduled classes or
upcoming events, go to www.
crossroads-arts.org or check the
center’s page on Facebook.
(Now that Baker County is in a
lower-risk category for COVID-19,
classes are resuming. A batik class
with Ginger Rembold is set for
March 18 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
To enroll, go to www.crossroads-
arts.org/product/2008233/batik-
with-ginger-rembold.)

with the traditional process of

time-consuming process, Macdon-

with watercolor and gouache.
She said she fi nds satisfaction
through the physical exercise of
the carving process for creating her
images.
In addition to First Friday, the
show can be viewed during the
