4 Thursday, November 12, 2020 GO! magazine — A&E in Northeast Oregon Art Center East opens for classes LA GRANDE — Art Center East galleries are open to the public. The center, 1006 Penn Ave. has new hours: noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday- Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. All staff and visitors are required to wear a mask or face shield when in the building. Classes are back — both in person and online. According to a press release, classes are an important part of Art Center East’s sustainability plan. They generate income for teaching artists, help fund ACE’s operational costs, and spread the joy of art. ACE has prepared the studios to be as safe as possible for in-person classes, including ample space for social distancing, mask and sanita- tion requirements for all students and teachers, and acrylic dividers between work spaces. Here is a list of classes for November. Register online at www. artcentereast.org. MACRAME AND MIMOSAS Macrame and Mimosas will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. This is an in-person class. In this 2-hour workshop partici- pants will learn the basics of mac- ramé and leave with a handmade plant hanger. And yes: mimosas! This is for ages 21 and older. Cost is $30 for ACE members, or $40 for nonmembers. The teacher artist is Katie Hall, a lifelong crafter and self-taught macramé artist. POETRY An online class titled “Poetry as Historical Fiction: Using Secondary Materials to Create Vivid Poems” is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 17, teaching artist is Katie Hall. COUNTRY DANCE FIDDLE ORCHESTRA On Tuesday, Nov. 17, a virtual even for Country Dance Fiddle Orchestra starts at 6 p.m. Partici- pation is free. Enjoy playing your bowed, plucked or wind instrument while expanding individual and ensem- ble skills in this fun and educa- tional musical group. This is offered the fi rst and third Tuesday of every month. ACE offers two macrame classes this month. PUZZLE EXCHANGE the art of macrame. It will be an in-person class on Saturday, Nov. 21, from noon to 4 p.m. Cost is $47 members, $56 nonmembers. The For those who have exhausted their supply of jigsaw puzzles, ACE will host a puzzle exchange on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at 1006 Penn Ave. Bring puzzles to trade for a new one. Submitted photo A batik watercolor workshop is set for Nov. 21 and 22 at Art Center East. It is an in-person class. from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The class will be held via Zoom. In this online class, participants will explore using secondary materials to create depth in their poetic voice and imagery. Students are welcome to bring secondary materials to use if they have ideas already in mind, or they can work with provided materials. Dur- ing the evening, participants will read sample poems and generate two to three poems from prompts. Participants will also share their writing (optional) to celebrate their accomplishments. Students are responsible for pro- viding a device with which they can participate in the class via Zoom. The teaching artist is Nancy Knowles, a professor of English/ Writing at Eastern Oregon Uni- versity. As a recipient of a Union County Cultural Coalition grant to participate in the Fishtrap Summer Gathering, she is paying forward lessons learned by sharing the joy of poetry with others. BATIK WORKSHOP A two-day workshop on batik watercolor is set for Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. This is an in-person class. Times are 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 21 and 1-2 p.m. Nov. 22. The class will create batik paint- ings using watercolor or acrylic paint, wax, and ink on a special type of paper. You’ll get step-by-step instructions for this unique paint- ing style while creating a unique composition. Please enter through the 5th Street door. Cost is $70 members, $85 non- members. Teaching artists Jan Clark and Denise Elizabeth Stone are both members of the Batik Convergence. They are multiple media specialists including experts at batik water- colors.
