■ ■ NaNoWriMo offers a program for grades 1-12
BAKER CITY — November is
National Novel Writing Month,
and each year the Baker County
Public Library runs a program to
help kids pen their own novel.
Missy Grammon, youth services
coordinator for the library, facili-
tates the NaNoWriMo program
(NaNoWriMo is the first few letters
of National Novel Writing Month).
The program is open to youth
in grades one to 12. This year
Grammon will run two different
age groups: grades one to six and
grades seven to 12.
This year’s writing challenge will
be virtual with online meet-ups to
work on the novels.
Interested youth can sign up
through the NaNoWriMo Young
Writers Program, and can choose
their word goal for the month.
“They can choose 100 words,
or 18,000 words. Whatever they
want,” Grammon said.
Writers then create their novel
throughout the month with the
goal of hitting their word-count
milestone.
Those who are 13 and older
can choose the adult version of
NaNoWriMo, which has a goal of
50,000 words.
To sign up, go to www.ymp.
nanowrimo.org. Young kids up
through sixth grade use the code
ABAQTMWF. Those in seventh
grade and older register with the
code XEDHXMQQ. The codes
can also be found on the library’s
Facebook page.
Kids winter book clubs
In other library news, young
readers can sign up for the library’s
winter book clubs in November.
Youth are encouraged to sign up
early to help choose the books.
There will be three age groups:
grades three to five, six to eight,
and nine to 12. As of now, book club
activities will be online.
