This is a special day established in history to honor those who were believers in Jesus Christ during their lives. Hebrews 11 recounts many of the faithfully departed. Much of Instead of trying to what we believe comes change everyone else, let’s T ask God to help us become the person he has called us to be. It’s a good possibility that a portion of what we think is being interpreted through a lens that is dusty and out of focus. Have we considered embracing humility, setting aside our party bias and sincerely praying that God would reveal the individual he wants us to vote for? Can we agree that God knows who would be the best person for the job? And what about unity? Well, with God being abso- lute truth, the solution to seeing eye to eye would be for everyone to listen and follow our creator. This would allow us to be on his page with every subject, and we would all be cor- rect. Opinions are relative to the individual, but truth is God’s universal standard of right and wrong. Jesus prayed in John 17 that all who believe in him would be one with God the same as he is one with his father. You see, spiritual unity is established on our love for God and all people, and the less love we have for others, the less unity we will experience. I Tim- othy 2:1-2 encourages us, “I exhort therefore, that, fi rst of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” ——— Ordained minister and chaplain William “Billy” F. CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS LA GRANDE — The warn- ings and counsel of the ancient prophets Mormon and Moroni for our times are the subject of the Church of Jesus Christ of Lat- ter-day Saints’ “Come, Follow Me” lesson for the week of Nov. 2. This lesson is based on Mormon chapters 7-9 (found in the Book of Mormon) in which Moroni coun- sels us to “search the prophecies of Isaiah” (Mormon 8:23) and writes, “Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present” (Mormon 8:35). The faithfulness of the prophets, as they found them- selves alone in a world fi lled with wickedness, is a great and ever- lasting testimony to all who study their writings. Members are reminded to check with their local leaders for current meeting times and pos- sible opportunities to remotely attend Sunday worship services and lessons. — Observer straff Another write-in candidate possibility Ben Lonergan/East Oregonian A sign on the Wesley United Methodist Church in Milton-Freewater reads “Holy Spirit for President” as a parade of Trump supporters drive down Highway 11 through the city on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020. Words of the Buddha There is no more worldly existence for the wise one who, like the earth, resents nothing, who is fi rm as a high pillar and as pure as a deep pool free from mud. (Dham- mapada 7.95) Diffi cult to detect and very subtle, the mind seizes whatever it wants; so let a wise one guard one’s mind, for a guarded mind brings happiness. (Dhammapada 3.36) If one going down into a river, swollen and swiftly fl owing, is carried away by the current — how can one help others across? (Sutta Nipata 2.321) No mother nor father nor any other kin can do greater good for oneself than a mind directed well. (Dhammapada 3.43) Think not lightly of good, saying, “It will not come to me.” Drop by drop is the water pot fi lled. Likewise, the wise one, gath- ering it little by little, fi lls oneself with good.
