The coronavirus was a central topic for both can- didates on Friday, Oct. 23, as Trump headed to Florida and Biden pre- pared to address the topic in Delaware. The night before in Nashville, the pair squared off on the pandemic, the economy, climate change and race — and the nature of presidential leadership itself. Trump pitched him- self to voters as the same disruptive candidate they elected to the White House four years ago. Biden offered himself as a more sober leader fi t for a nation in crisis. Both campaigns predict- ably claimed a boost from the televised showdown that drew an audience of tens of millions. But with nearly 50 million ballots already cast, it remained unclear how much the faceoff would alter the course of the campaign. The presi- dent rosily predicted that it will “go away;” Biden countered the nation was headed toward “a dark winter.” The Democratic nom- inee planned to reinforce that criticism with remarks Friday in Delaware on his plans to help the nation and the economy through the pandemic. It’s all thanks to a law approved decades ago that was intended to attract presidential candidates to a state they usually ignore because it’s so reliably conservative. While the statewide vote will clearly go to President Donald Trump, former Vice Presi- dent Joe Biden has a good chance of winning in the state’s 2nd Congressional District, meaning one of Nebraska’s fi ve Electoral College votes could go to the Democrat.
