Pick up school lunches
for La Grande students
beginning Monday
LA GRANDE — Begin-
ning the fi rst day of school,
Monday, Aug. 31, La Grande
School District will be serv-
ing grab-and-go lunches to
the district’s K-12 students.
Every school day, one
meal per enrolled student
may be picked up between
11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the
main entrance of any of the
three elementary schools.
Meals must be eaten else-
where.
All meals for students in
kindergarten through eighth
grade will be free. Meal
charges for high school
students will be determined
by their status based on the
Free & Reduced Meal ap-
plication, which can be com-
pleted at lagrandesd.org.
Anyone else may purchase
a lunch for $3.80.
Unlike last spring, stu-
dents must be identifi ed
when meals are picked up.
The use of student identi-
fi cation cards is strongly
encouraged. Kindergarten
through eighth-grade stu-
dents received new ID cards
at registration. High school
students will use last year’s
cards. Parents may pick up
the meals for their children,
but they must provide iden-
tifi cation of each student.

Charlton, 55, of Elgin, died
Aug. 22 at her residence. At
her request, there will not
be a service.
Known
as Bev, she
was born Oct.
12, 1964, in
Baker City,
to Ira “Slim”
Charlton and Harriet Laird.
She resided in Union, La
Grande and Elgin. She
graduated from Union High
School.
Bev was employed at
Our Place, The Smoke-
house, Golden Crown,
Best Western and Jensen’s
Tree Service. She enjoyed
yard sales, shopping and
spending time with her
grandchildren.
Survivors include
her signifi cant other of
38 years, Craig Howard
of Elgin; children and
their spouses, Bradley
and Raechel Charlton of
Bend, Cassie and Robby
Thompson of Elgin,
Brandy and Ken Roshon
of Weston, and Rebecca

Scott Preston Hoadley,
55, of La Grande, died Aug.
21 at Providence Hospital
in Spokane, Washington. At
his request, there will not

Scott was
born July
15, 1965, in
Quincy, Wash-
ington, to
Robert and
Annette (Taal) Hoadley. He
graduated from La Grande
High School.
Scott was a horse trainer.
He enjoyed spending
time outdoors, being with
family, attending local
fairs and rodeos, and back-
country horseback riding.
He also enjoyed horse
racing, hunting, fi shing and
watching NASCAR.
Scott was a member
of the Union County Fair
Board and the La Grande
Maverick Club. He was
“Kit Carson” during the
1992 Carson Days in
Nevada.
Surviving relatives
include his children, Robert
and paternal grandparents,
Wayne and Mary Hoadley.

announced it has renewed
its accreditation with the
Land Trust Accreditation
Commission.
Blue Mountain Land
Trust President Linda Her-
bert in the press release said
443 out of more than 1,300
land trusts nationwide have
achieved accreditation from
the Land Trust Accredita-
tion Commission.
“It speaks to our dili-
gence, transparency and
professionalism as we work
to preserve and protect the
lands of the Blue Mountain
region,” Herbert said.

toward school supplies

Lions Club voted to send
$600 for school supplies to
the Elgin School District.
The club in a press
release reported it recently
held a picnic meeting with
about 25 members at the
home of Daryl and Bar-
bara Hawes. Daryl Hawes
grilled the hot dogs and
hamburgers while Barbara
Hawes and Kathy Oliver

9:56 a.m. — A caller reported
a cow on the loose on the 66700
block of End Road, Summer-
ville. A Union County sheriff’s
deputy contacted the owner to
retrieve the cow.
2 p.m. — The Union County
Sheriff’s Offi ce received a report
of possible animal neglect at
North Bellwood and East Delta
streets, Union.
2:40 p.m. — A resident on
the 1200 block of Conklin Road,
Cove, asked to speak to a
Union County sheriff’s deputy
about an ongoing issue with a
neighbor.
5:44 p.m. — La Grande police

for students. Member
Everett Grandeen moved
to send the school $600 for
the paper supplies, and the
club voted in approval.
Members noted that
vision testing, bingo events
and basketball tourna-
ment are up in the air due
to coronavirus restrictions
and have to stay on hold for
now.
The club also discussed
having a roadside cleanup
in September, the press
release stated. Chair Bar-
bara Hawes will provide
information to the mem-
bers, and Oliver will con-
tact Foodtown regarding
the next case lot sale date
for groceries so the club
can collect items for the
local food bank.

1:53 a.m. — La Grande police
received a report from the 2300
block of Spruce Street of teens
out after curfew. An offi cer
responded and warned three
teens about the violation.
11:12 a.m. — A caller reported
a disturbance between a land-
lord and a tenant in Union. A
Union County sheriff’s deputy
made contact and explained
options.
3:14 p.m. — A caller reported
livestock on the 72100 block of
Highway 82, Elgin. The animals
were located safe on nearby
property.
5:06 p.m. — La Grande police
received a report of two aggres-
sive dogs on the loose on the
1500 block of 26th Street. The
dogs were gone by the time an
offi cer arrived.
8:11 p.m. — La Grande police
responded to the 600 block

Florence Irene Howell,
87, of Imbler, died Aug. 23

Florence
was born Dec.
10, 1932, in
Boise, Idaho,
to Stephen
and Blanche
(Johnson)
Carn. She always spoke
fondly of her early years
growing up in Camp 58 at
Starkey, and she cherished
the friends she made while
living there. Florence grad-
uated from La Grande High
School in 1951. She married
William “Bill” Howell on
March 5, 1955.
Florence was a very
devoted farmer’s wife,
mother, volunteer and
grandmother. She loved to
grow fl owers, work in her
garden, can fruit and veg-
etables and be involved
with most anything out-
doors. She enjoyed any
sport involving the Imbler
Panthers.
Florence was involved
in many local organiza-
tions, including Cattle-
women, Eastern Star, PEO,
Union County Fair Board
and Grande Ronde Hospital
Board. She was a member
of the First Presbyterian
Church.
Surviving relatives
include her husband of
65 years, Bill; children
and their spouses, Curt
and Annette Howell of La
Grande, Kristy and Vin
Searles of Salem, Ann and
Mike Spring of Dayton,
Washington, and Mark
and Tina Howell of Imbler;
nine grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren; and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in
death by her parents, Steve
