Movies in the Parking Lot features two fi lms
■ Event starts at dusk at Churchill School
BAKER CITY — Audiences will
be treated to two documentaries
this Saturday during Movies in the
Parking Lot at Churchill School,
located at the corner of Broadway
and 16th streets in Baker City.
The fi lms will be shown on the
outdoor screen in the school’s park-
ing lot. Admission is by donation.
The lot opens at 7:30 p.m., and
the fi rst fi lm will start at 8:15
p.m. Those attending are asked
to observe physical distancing
guidelines.
The fi lmmaker is Matthew
McCormick, who lives in Spokane
and is a professor at Gonzaga
University.
“Buzz One Four” chronicles the
ill-fated fl ight of a Cold War B-52
bomber loaded with two thermo-
nuclear bombs. It crashed 90 miles
from Washington, D.C. — an event
that remained classifi ed.
But not for McCormick — the
pilot was his grandfather.
“The crash of fl ight Buzz One
Four is a story I grew up with, but
didn’t truly comprehend the sever-
ity of until I randomly Googled it
decades later as an adult,” he said.
“Buzz One Four” investigates the
details of the crash and other nu-
clear weapon accidents and leaves
us, says a press release, “wondering
if the United States was in greater
danger of nuking itself than being
attacked by the Russians.”

McCormick describes the
60-minute fi lm as half historical
documentation and half family
portrait.
The second fi lm, “The Deep-
est Hole,” runs for less than 13
minutes. It premiered in January
at the Sundance Film Festival. It
was his fourth fi lm to be invited to
the festival.
This experimental documentary
explores a little-known Cold War
race between the United States
and the Soviet Union — the race
to see which country could dig the
deepest hole to reach the Earth’s
mantle.
“This lack of public awareness
is particularly surprising,” McCor-
mick said, “seeing that one of the
countries may have also discovered

McCormick’s other fi lms include
“Some Days Are Better than Oth-
ers” and “The Subconscious Art of
Graffi ti Removal.”
In addition to documentaries,
the Spokane resident has directed
music videos for bands including

Broken Bells.

Take a train ride to Sumpter
SUMPTER — The Sumpter
Valley Railroad will have round-
trip Back to School train rides this
weekend, Saturday and Sunday,
Aug. 29 and 30.
Trains will depart from the
McEwen Depot, just south of High-
way 7 between Mileposts 27 and
