Monthly puzzle
exchange planned
LA GRANDE — The pan-
demic has meant lots of time
devoted to indoor activities.
For many, that includes jig-
saw puzzles. For those who
have worked through the
ones you have and are look-
ing for more, Art Center East
is hosting a puzzle exchange
on the third Saturday of the
month from 1-2 p.m. The
monthly in-person exchang-
es will require face coverings
and social distancing. ACE
staff will disinfect puzzles
and surfaces.
The next exchange will
take place Saturday, July
18. Bring a puzzle and take
one home. The center has a
selection of donated puzzles
to kick things off. There is a
suggested donation of $5
per puzzle taken home or
exchanged, all proceeds
benefi ting ACE.

received a report of a distur-
bance on the 1600 block of
Gekeler Lane..
2:19 p.m. — An employee at
the Chevron Shop N’Go, 1519
Adams Ave., called police about
a customer refusing to wear
a mask and causing a distur-
bance.
3:52 p.m. — The Union
County Sheriff’s Offi ce arrested
Joshua David Toy, 29, of Elgin,
for felon in possession of a
weapon, reckless driving and
second-degree trespass.
9:52 p.m. — La Grande police
arrested William Troy Mitchell,
39, of La Grande, for violating
parole, felony methamphet-
amine possession and tamper-
ing with evidence.
10:41 p.m. — The person who
La Grande police trespassed
earlier from the Chevron station
on Adams Avenue returned.
11:58 p.m. — And the person
returned to the Chevron station,
and again offi cers arrived and
told the person to leave.

Bett y J. (Bunten)
Gulzow
1924-2020 • La Grande
Betty Jonita Gulzow,
95, of La Grande, died July
11. A graveside service
will begin at 11 a.m. July
17 at the Island City Ceme-
tery. Arrangements are by
Daniels-Knopp Funeral,
Cremation & Life Celebra-
tion Center.
Betty was
born Nov.
12, 1924, in
La Grande,
to John
and Bessie
(Hoffman)
Bunten. She spent her
fi rst years on Cabbage
Hill and attended a one-
room schoolhouse in her
early grades. Her family
then moved to the Island
City area and she attended
a one-room schoolhouse
on Red Pepper Lane. She
didn’t fi nish her schooling
past the eighth grade
because she needed to
work to help the family.
On March 5, 1941,
Betty married Bob Gulzow
in Weiser, Idaho. They
were married 60 years
before his death in 2002.
Betty and Bob were long-
time farmers in the Grande
Ronde Valley. They
enjoyed traveling in var-
ious countries and going
south for many years. They
spent several years living
on the Coast and then
Salem, where Bob passed
away.
Betty enjoyed gar-
dening, restoring old
furniture, cooking and
traveling.
She was a 4H leader and
crew boss for Del Monte.
She and Bob were long-
time members of the First
Christian Church and the
Good Sam Club.
Surviving relatives
include her children,
Karval Watts of Salem,
Mike Gulzow and wife,
Jackie, of La Grande,
and Sandra Gulzow of
Salem; sister, Janie Bates
of Casper, Wyoming;
fi ve grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren; and
many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in
death by her parents; hus-
band, Bob Gulzow; sister,
Juanita Cross; brothers,
Bill, Raymond, Leroy,
Vernon and Fred Bunten;
and grandson, Kevin
Wilson.

Edward Hua
1972-2020 • La Grande
Edward Stanley Aukai
Hua, 48, of La Grande,
died July 7 at a friend’s
residence. A service will
be held at a later time.
Edward was born Jan.
16, 1972, in Hilo, Hawaii,
to Albert and Marilyn
(Wong) Hua. He attended
Santa Ynez Valley High
School.
On March 8 of this
year he married Amanda
Shrout. Edward was an
auto detailer and enjoyed
doing freehand art.
Surviving relatives

Lyle William Marshall
November 25, 1948 - July 10, 2020
Lyle William Marshall passed away
peacefully in his home on July 10, 2020,
surrounded by family, following a battle
with cancer. Family and friends are invit-
ed to remember and honor Lyle at Haines
Stampede grounds on Friday, July 17
at 10:00am, causal dress is encouraged.
COVID-19 precautions will be followed.
Attendees must wear a mask and practice
social distancing to meet COVID-19 guid-
ance. The service will be live streamed for
those who cannot attend. Go to lfc@love-

Lyle was born Thanksgiving Day,
November 25, 1948, to Orville and Barbra
(Lester) Marshall in La Grande, Oregon.
He attended school in La Grande, graduat-
ing from La Grande High School in 1967.
His passion for hunting and fishing and
love of the outdoors were instilled at a
young age by excursions with his dad and
grandpa Dallas (Dack) Lester.
Lyle married Pam Marks in June of
1967. They had two children, Sandy
Fay and Tad William. The coupled later
divorced.
Lyle met the love of his life, Donna
Villines in 1975 and they were married in
1981, becoming a dad to Tonia, Donna’s
daughter.
Lyle shared his passion of the outdoors
with Donna and the kids. In their adult
lives, the kids have continued to carry on
his love of the outdoors, fishing and hunt-
ing. One memorable vacation was a week
spent on a dock at the Snake River. Being
a kid at heart, Lyle took his family to
Disneyland, Knottsberry Farm and many
State Fairs. He also took them to the coast
where they enjoyed crabbing. These trips
created memories that will remain in their
hearts forever.
The summer of 2018, Lyle gave Donna
her favorite summer, hiking into seven
high lakes in the Elkhorns. They looked
forward to sharing many more of these
adventures, Lyle’s illness didn’t allow this.
Lyle worked at Ken Leavitt’s Philips 66
during high school, which created a life-
long friendship. In 1967, he began his life
long career at Boise Cascade Particleboard
Plant in the shipping department. After 45
years, Lyle retired as Shipping Supervisor.
Lyle gave credit for his success to the
Shipping Supervisor before him, Groover
Brooks. During his 45 years, many of his
co-workers were at the receiving end of
his love of pranks. Lyle was well liked by
his co-workers, which was evident in the
many friendships he built.
Lyle was an exceptional organizer. He
was responsible for starting, organizing
and running the Boise Cascade Bass
Tournament. He ran the tournament for
30 plus years and remained active in the
tournament after retiring. His love for
golf led to he and his brother, Bob Mar-
shall, continuing to host an annual golf
tournament in Jackpot, Nevada. In his
earlier years, Lyle attended a rodeo school
for bareback riding. He participated in
many local rodeos including the Haines
Stampede.
Lyle was a member of The Elks, The
Eagles, Cove Sportsman Club, Oregon
Hunters Association, Rocky Mountain
Elk Foundation and National Wild Turkey
Federation.
Family and friends were the center of
Lyle’s life. Friends say Lyle was a special
man, everyone that knew him liked and
respected him. He was never too busy to
stop and chat, made time for everyone.
Lyle was a loving, supportive son, hus-
band and father that will be deeply missed.
Lyle will remain in our hearts always
until we meet him again. He has joined
his father, Orville Marshall along with
many other loved family members. He
is survived by his wife, Donna Marshall;
children, Sandy Marshall of Milton-Free-
water, OR, Tad Marshall (Brandy) of
Cheyenne, WY, Zac Marshall of Portland,
OR and daughter, Tonia Springer (Scott)
of Baker City, OR; mother, Barbara Mar-
shall of La Grande, OR; sisters, Nancy
McCoy (Mike) of La Grande, OR and
Kathleen Cathey of Meridian, ID; brother,
Bob Marshall (Trena) of Spokane, WA; 6
grandchildren, Tanner, Cheyenne, Tianna,
Hunter, Walker and Diesel. He was
preceded in death by his father, Orville;
grandparents and brother-in-law, Richard
Cathey.
In lieu of flowers a memorial donation
may be made to, Hunt of a Lifetime Foun-
dation, Inc., 6297 Buffalo Road, Harbor-
creek, PA 16421, in Lyle’s name.
