CRAPPIE Continued from Page 1B I decided to put on a Lake Fork Trophy Lures 2¼-inch Sickle Tail Baby Shad. After 45 minutes I’d caught six and Koko had only caught a couple. I told her we were switching hers to a LFTL jig. It also helps to put a Pautzke It was a very short hike. We made it to just past the place where the trail crosses the route of the wooden pipe- line that carried water from Olive Lake to the Fremont Powerhouse. The pipeline — long sec- tions of which remain intact — is maybe a tenth of a mile from the trailhead. The trail was snow-covered, and worse yet I could see at least half a dozen trees lying across the tread up ahead. Crappie Fireball on the hook. Right away she started smoking them too. Also, usually I’ll put a couple of splitshots 6 inches above the jig. When I changed Koko’s jig, I removed her splitshots. LFTL makes the best plas- tics. They have slots cut in the tail so any movement causes the jig to quiver realistically. SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 2020 I’m naive but not utterly incapable of facing reality. I knew the promise of breakfast burritos and geo- caches wouldn’t compensate for soggy shoes and scratched legs, so we turned back. I was disappointed, as I always am when a hike is thwarted, but only slightly. We were still out in the woods on a fi ne day, and I was sure we could cobble together an alternative itinerary. Our fi rst goal was a pair Here’s what was working for us: They were spawning so we’d cast right up close to the shoreline. We’d lift our rod tip and then reel in slowly as we let it back down. You don’t want to reel too fast. Crappie are called papermouths for a reason. They have really soft mouths that can easily rip out so be gentle when of geocaches, both of which were supposed to be near the pipeline, and less than a mile back down the road toward Granite. We found both caches — the second rather more quickly than the fi rst, which was hidden, in cunning fash- ion, inside a carabiner lashed to a juvenile lodgepole pine. But it was pleasant enough to tramp around in the snowy forest, listening to the wind brushing the limbs and the working them. Don’t set the hook. Just lift your rod tip and reel steadily to keep pressure on. The bigger (heavier) they are, the more likely they’ll rip off when hauling them into the boat. So I net all of mine. I haven’t documented it but I bet you’ll lose 15% to 20% if you try to lift them in so that’s why I use a net. Kolby and I both wondered, did the gurgle of snowmelt. Max had a small red fl ying disc — a potential item to swap for another in a geocache — and he giggled with delight as he watched it tumble along in the freshet fl owing beside the road. He was happier still when, after grudgingly agree- ing to let me toss the disc into a culvert, it rushed out the other end where I plucked it from the icy water. See Detoured/Page 8B fishing get hot because the sun was going down or had we just missed this little crappie stronghold when we went by the first time? I don’t know but I think we’re going back again near dusk and try to do a repeat. If you haven’t been out crappie fishing this spring, then you better get out fast and get in on the fun!
