“Crossing Swords”
“Movie: Brick Mansions”
This stop-motion-animated comedy
series follows the adventures of a good-
hearted peasant who realizes his coveted
position of squire at the royal palace
comes with definite drawbacks in the
form of libidinous monarchs, crooks and
charlatans. Worse, he’s now the black sheep
of his criminal family and his siblings are
intent on making him suffer. Nicholas
Hoult, Breckin Meyer, Tony Hale, Luke
Evans and Adam Pally head the voice cast.
(ORIGINAL)
Set in a dystopian Detroit of the near future,
this 2014 French-Canadian action film — a
remake of the superior 2004 French film
“District 13” — follows a heroic undercover
cop (Paul Walker) who joins forces with an
ex-con (David Belle, essentially recreating
the character he played in “District 13”)
to rescue the latter’s kidnapped girlfriend
(Catalina Denis) and save the city from
apocalyptic destruction. RZA also stars. This
was the last film Walker completed before
his death in November 2013.
“Movie: Gloria”
From Chile comes this 2013 comedy/
drama about a free-spirited older Santiago
woman and the realities of her whirlwind
romance with a former naval officer who
she meets out while clubbing. Chilean
stage legend Paulina García (“I’m Not
Lorena”) stars as the title character, in
a cast with Sergio Hernández, Diego
Fontecilla and Fabiola Zamora for director
Sebastián Lelio (“The Year of the Tiger”).
“Movie: The Conjuring”
The director who launched the “Saw”
franchise, James Wan, shows he has what
it takes to freshen up another horror
concept with this paranormal investigation
melodrama ... asurprisingly strong force at
the 2013 summer box office. Vera Farmiga
(“Bates Motel”) and Patrick Wilson
(“Fargo”) — also one of Wan’s “Insidious”
stars — play supposed experts on the
supernatural who end up in over their
heads when they probe a family’s haunted
farmhouse.
