Meetings
• ELGIN — The Elgin
Museum and Historical
Society will hold its fi rst
meeting of the year Monday,
June 1, at 6:30 p.m. The
meeting is scheduled at the
Elgin Depot, but if there are
any complications, the board
members will move to the
museum.
The agenda includes the
status of the newsletter,
opening dates for the
museum, organization of the
displays and progress of the
old jail.
The meeting is for museum
board members and associ-
ates. Members of the public
are welcome to attend.
• COVE — The City of Cove
will hold its regular council
meeting Tuesday, June 2, at
7 p.m. at Cove City Hall, 504
Alder.

Flora School moves annual
pioneer celebration online
WEDNESDAY
8:20 a.m. — A caller in Summerville asked to
speak to someone with the Union County Sheriff’s
Offi ce about options for moving some cattle. A depu-
ty contacted the person and discussed the situation.
10:54 a.m. — A caller reported vandalism to a vehicle
on the 2500 block of Adams Avenue, La Grande. An
offi cer responded and took a report.
11:45 a.m. — La Grande police responded to the 800
block of Grandy Avenue for a possible fi ght. Offi cers
separated the people involved and determined the inci-
dent did not rise to the level of a mandatory arrest.
2:33 p.m. — A caller on the 67100 block of Miller
Lane, Union, reported someone was the victim of a
dog bite. An animal enforcement offi cer responded
and took a report.
8:42 p.m. — A caller reported a careless driver on
the 200 block of 16th Street, La Grande. A call 11 min-
utes later reported a careless driver on the 700 block
of West Delta Street, Union. Law enforcement did not
fi nd the drivers.
10:34 p.m. — La Grande police responded to the
1500 block of 21st Street for a possible residential
burglary.

FLORA — The corona-
virus outbreak has led to the
cancellation of School Days
at Flora School. But the Flora
School Education Center is
working on a Virtual School
Days for 2020.
Normally held the fi rst Sat-
urday in June, the pioneer cel-
ebration will go virtual if at
all possible on Saturday, June
6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
the Flora School’s Facebook
page.
More information will
be available on the school’s
Facebook page, website and
newsletter.
The Flora School Board
also voted to cancel all
classes and activities for the
remainder of 2020, though
some may be held when
the “stay home” orders
lift in Oregon, Idaho and
Washington.
The school is about 35
miles north of Enterprise in
Flora and close to the border
of each state. The school will
reschedule classes and activi-
ties into 2021.

Pioneer demonstrations and activities are featured during Flora
School Days 2019. The annual event helps raise money for the
Flora School restoration project and to highlight the folk arts.
The school moved the 2020 celebration online to the school’s
Virtual School Days 2020 group Facebook page.
10:20 a.m. — A caller reported a vehicle struck a cat
on the 2100 block of Second Street, La Grande. The
animal enforcement offi cer responded and took the cat
to an animal care center.
1:32 p.m. — A La Grande resident reported harass-
ment. An offi cer contacted the person, took information
and referred that to a domestic violence detective.
3:40 p.m. — A caller reported horses on the loose on
Deal Canyon Road, La Grande. Dispatch contacted the
owners of the horses, which were returned.
4:42 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Offi ce cited
Mitchell Dean Day, 50, of Union, on accusations of
driving under the infl uence of intoxicants.
5:48 p.m. — The Union County Sheriff’s Offi ce
received a request to check on the welfare of an Elgin
resident who has mental health issues. A deputy deter-
mined the person was fi ne.
9:12 p.m. — La Grande police responded to a request
to check on someone also suffering mental or emotion-
al problems. The person also was deemed OK.
OBITUARIES
Miriam E. (Carter) Hill
La Grande • 1920-2020
Miriam Elizabeth Hill,
99, of La Grande, died
May 23. A private grave-
side service will be held.
Miriam was
born Oct. 27,
1920, at her
grandmother
Yates’ home in
Ogden, Utah,
to Francis
Edgar and Mary (Yates)
Carter. She grew up in
Park Valley, Utah, on her
family’s ranch.
After graduating from
Box Elder High School
in Brigham City, Utah,
Miriam attended beauty
school and worked in
shops in Ogden and
Morgan, Utah. When
World War II started,
there was a demand for
war plant workers so in
February of 1943 Miriam
started working in the
payroll department at the
Army Supply Depot in
Ogden.
Miriam married Ralph
Arnold Hill in the Logan
Temple of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints on June 22, 1945.
They resided in Utah and
California but lived most
of their married life in the
Grande Ronde Valley.
Miriam was a 4-H
sewing club leader for sev-
eral years and not only
taught her own daughters
how to sew but many other
girls. She worked for Fed-
eral Crop Insurance for a
couple of years before she
and Ralph bought Zimmer-
man’s Furniture and Hard-
ware Store in 1972 and
ran it together until their
retirement in 1988.
In retirement, Miriam
and Ralph worked hard in
their yard and their farm
in Cove. They enjoyed sev-
eral winters in St. George,
Utah, until Ralph was
too ill to make the trip.
Miriam then spent her time
taking care of her husband
until his passing in 2005.
Miriam was a member
of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints
and served in many capac-
ities, including years in
the Cub Scout and youth
programs. A very com-
passionate person, she
was always taking food to
others and serving in any
way she could. She has left
her children and grand-
children a great example of
how to serve others.
Surviving relatives
include her children and
their spouses, Ralph “Bill”
and Marcia Hill of Cove,
Frank and Linda Hill of
Lake Forest, California,
JoAnn and John Huntsman
of Athena, Tamra Hooton
of Hyrum, Utah, and
Duane and Dawn Hill of
Owings, Maryland; and
27 grandchildren and 54
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded
in death by her hus-
band, Ralph; infant son,
David Carter; son-in-law,
Craig Hooton; and three
great-grandchildren.

John D. Finley

John David Finley, 90,
formerly of La Grande,
died May 22 at Salem Hos-
pital. A private family
graveside ser-
vice will be
held at Willa-
mette National
Cemetery.

John was born Feb. 24,
1930, in Baker City, to
Alvin Otis Finley, from
Smithville, Indiana, and
Hannah Mae Conner, from
Enterprise. He was raised
in La Grande.
When John turned 18,
he joined the U.S. Navy,
serving from 1948 until
1952, including two years
during the Korean War.
Returning to Northeast
Oregon, he married Joan
Marie Houston in 1952.
John and Joan had three
sons: Dennis, Randy and
Bruce.
John worked at var-
ious jobs having to do with
mechanics, machining and
welding for a variety of
companies, including but
not limited to Boise Cas-
cade Mill, Boeing and Pre-
cision Cast Parts. During
the middle years of his
working career, John
attended Linn-Benton
Community College and
graduated with an associ-
ate’s degree in metallurgy.

John was a Chris-
tian and believed deeply
in the Lord. He and his
wife were active in the
churches in which they
were members, most

Christian Church.

include his wife of 67
years, Joan; son, Randy
Finley; son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Bruce and
Joanne Finley; sister,
Laura Mae Feldhacker;
and two grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in
death by his parents;
brother, Jason Finley; and
eldest son, Dennis Finley.

chain until her retirement.
Kaye enjoyed bowling and
tole painting.

Victor Abbott
May 18, 1936 - May 10, 2020
Victor Abbott, 83, of Sum-
merville, died Sunday, May 10th
in his favorite hunting place in
the mountains between Unity
and Sumpter. Arrangements
are entrusted to Daniels-Knopp
Funeral, Cremation & Life Cele-
bration Center in La Grande.
Victor was born May 18th,
1936 in Huntington to Rob-
ert Wade and Muriel Ruth
(Greenslade) Abbott. In 1946 the
railroad moved his family from Huntington to La Grande
where he graduated from high school in 1954. After grad-
uating he joined the Navy and served with the sea bees as a
heavy equipment operator until 1962. After his honorable
discharge he worked for the railroad, then as a logger then
drove log truck and later purchased his own truck. On Sep-
tember 6th, 1984 he was married to Barbara Swope. In 1988
they made their home in Summerville.
Victor was a devoted member of the New Song Commu-
nity Church in La Grande. He loved hunting, fishing, camp-
ing and spending time in the outdoors. He also enjoyed
leather and wood working.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Barbara Abbott;
children, Tracy & Beth Abbott of Nampa, ID, Tim & Kris
Abbott of Fresno, CA, Randy Abbott of Boise, ID, Shari &
Bill Schaffer of La Grande, step daughters, Bonnie Campag-
na of Louisianna, Bette Daline of Arizona; siblings, Wade
Abbott of Port Orchard, WA, Kay and Harold Rogers of La
Grande, Nancy Sargent of Telocaset , Jim & Mary Abbott of
Deer Park, WA; 18 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren.
Victor was preceded in death by both of his parents.
He was a loving husband and father and very much
enjoyed his church.
