TRAILS
Continued from Page 1B
The Trails Association has more
than 40 members.
West said he’d like to see that
number grow — and see the group’s
geographic range spread.
That’s one of the purposes of a plan-
ning meeting Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 5:30
p.m. in the Colleen Johnson Meeting
Room at the Cook Memorial Library,
2006 Fourth St. in La Grande.
West said the group would like to
schedule trail work trips this summer
in the Elkhorns.
Working with the Forest Service,
the Trails Association supplies train-
ing as well as equipment, including
the crosscut saws used in wilderness
areas. Chain saws are allowed outside
wilderness areas, including much of
the Elkhorns.
“We want to supplement what the
Forest Service is doing, not supplant
it,” West said. “I think we’re making a
signifi cant contribution to trail main-
tenance.”
THE OBSERVER & BAKER CITY HERALD — 3B
Sweyn Wall, recreation specialist
at the Wallowa-Whitman’s Wallowa
Mountains offi ce, lauded the efforts of
the Trails Association.
We continue to develop partnerships
and volunteer opportunities to help
maintain trails and facilities in these
areas, and the Wallowa Mountains
Hells Canyon Trail Association plays a
valuable role,” Wall said. “We’re excited
to see their growing ranks and on-the-
ground accomplishments, and we’re
looking forward to another successful
fi eld season together.”
Big game hunters’
comments sought
The Oregon Department
of Fish and Wildlife is asking
big game hunters to comment
about current hunting sea-
sons through an online forum
open through March 3.
The agency has been
working for the past several
years to streamline hunting
regulations.
