EOU men split road trip
The Eastern Oregon University men’s bas-
ketball team split its road trip to Evergreen
State College and Northwest University,
claiming an 83-80 win Friday over Evergreen
but seeing a comeback attempt Saturday
against Northwest fall short in a 72-68 loss.
Jarek Schetzle had a monster game in
Friday’s win, scoring 29 points on 14-of-16
shooting and also collecting 14 rebounds. Max
McCullough and Landon Jones had 16 points
apiece, and Josh Brown added 12 points.
EOU’s starters combined for 80 of the team’s
83 points.
The Mountaineers scored the last 11 points
of the first half to take a 44-41 lead into the
break on a 3-pointer by Jamal Heckard, then
built as much as a 10-point second-half lead
on a field goal by Schetzle with 12:49 to play.
The Geoducks evened the score twice late,
jump (15-feet-7) and eighth in the 60 hurdles
(10.09).
Karli Bedard, in her first-ever pentathlon for
EOU, scored 2,418 points for 11th. The fresh-
man was ninth in the high jump (4-feet-10-1/2)
and shot put (27-feet-1/2), 10th in the long jump
(13-feet-7) and 800 (2:45.34), and 11th in the 60
hurdles (10.98).
On the men’s side, Coats scored 4,435 points
to place fourth in the two-day heptathlon. He
placed second in the long jump (20-feet-7) and
tied for second in the pole vault (14-feet-5-1/4).
He was also eighth in the shot put (34-feet-10-
1/2) and the high jump (5-feet-9-1/4), and 10th
in the 60 (7.69), the 1,000 (3:05.29) and the 60

(2:57.19), seventh in the 60 hurdles (9.15),
eighth in the 60 (7.53), 10th in the shot put (33-
feet-9-1/2) and 12th in the long jump (18-feet-7)
and the high jump (5-feet-7-3/4). He did not
clear a height in the pole vault.
Eastern returns to the track Saturday at the
Bronco Invite in Boise, Idaho.
including at 69-69 on a Raven Frazier field
goal with four minutes to go, but McCullough
scored the next seven for EOU to help push
the lead to 76-71 with 2:37 left, and Brown
hit a clutch 3-pointer with 41 seconds to go to
make it 79-73. EOU finished the win off at the
free-throw line.
On Saturday, Eastern fell behind by as
much as 17 in the first half and trailed 45-31
at the break, but rallied in the second half to
give itself a chance to knock off the Eagles.
EOU, though, never grabbed the lead in
the second half. The Mountaineers pulled
to within two points on numerous occasions
and got as close as 62-61 on a McCullough
3-pointer with 5:21 to play.
But the Eagles responded with an 8-1 run
to take a 70-62 lead on Ryan Ricks’ field goal
with 1:48 to play. Jones capped a 6-0 run with
two free throws to make it 70-68 with 43
seconds remaining, but Northwest’s Christian
Hakilimali scored with 16 seconds to play to
ice the game.
Schetzle again led EOU with 21 points and
13 rebounds. McCullough scored 17 points,
and Jones had 16 points and 11 boards.
The Mountaineers got little production from
their bench over the weekend, as the starters
scored all but five points in the two games
combined.
Eastern (9-8 overall, 3-5 Cascade Collegiate
Conference) visits College of Idaho Wednesday.
Zeb Ramsden (145) and Jonah
Staigle (220) won titles for the
Eagles. Ramsden pinned all three
opponents and took down Echo/Stan-
field’s Isaiah Lemmon in the final.
Staigle also won all his matches by
fall, winning in the final bout of his
round-robin format weight class by
fall over Irrigon’s Bradley Dawson.
Ronny Morello took second at
170 with a 1-1 record, pinning Bak-
er’s Jayden Clark in the semifinals
and losing by fall to Heppner/Ione’s
Conor Brosnan in the final.
Kennison Knifong went 3-1 to
take third at 145, pinning Cade Lind
of Baker in the third-place match.
Harley Miller (160) took sixth.
