Competition
LA GRANDE — The
Union County Chamber
of Commerce announced
the inaugural county-wide
Holiday Decorating Com-
petition. Prizes (including
energy credits from Oregon
Trail Electic Co-Op) and
trophies will be awarded
for the best home in each
town, best business, best
street/neighborhood and
best town (based on num-
ber of contest participants).
Judges will consider the
uniqueness of the design and
creative use of lights and
decorations; maximum en-
ergy effi ciency; presentation
(color coordination, balance,
overall attractiveness); and
implementation and use of
a holiday-spirited theme.
Judging from the street will
take place Wednesday-Fri-
day Entry in the competition
must be completed by 5 p.m.

A resident on the 700 block of
20th Street, La Grande, reported a
male during the night knocked and
pounded on the door and wiggled
the door handle, but the caller did
not know the person.
La Grande police at 9:40 a.m.
received a report of possible
animal neglect at 26th Street and
Mulholland Drive.
La Grande police shortly before
11 a.m. received a report of a
vehicle theft on the 2200 block of
Jefferson Avenue.
The Union County Sheriff’s Of-
fi ce at 3:06 p.m. arrested Luke Allen
Sauer, 31, of La Grande, on a Linn
County warrant for felon in posses-
sion of a weapon and two counts
of fi rst-degree theft.
La Grande police at about 5:30
p.m. responded to the 1200 block
of Y Avenue on a report of juveniles
using marijuana. The offi cer found
no illegal drugs.
Oregon State Police arrested
Michelle Rene Daniels, 55, of La
Grande, for driving under the infl u-
ence of intoxicants.
La Grande police at about 11
p.m. responded to a report of a
vehicle on the railroad tracks at
Depot Street and Jefferson Avenue.
An offi cer arrived and arrested
Edward Henning, 57, of La Grande,
for fi rst-degree trespass and felony
methamphetamine possession.

Grande, died Nov. 29 at St.
Alphonsus Regional Medi-
cal Center in
Boise, Idaho.

born May 27,
1930, in Grants
Pass. He served in the U.S.
Army during the Korean
Confl ict in the early 1950s.
Earl loved La Grande, being
in the mountains, cutting
wood, hunting and fi shing,
and watching TV Westerns
in the home he built.

ment. There is no doubt that
he would have continued
working well into his 90s if
it were not for the accident
that took his life. He was a
very independent business-
man and employer and
helped many of the people
who worked for him.
Earl loved his home,
family and old friends, and
of course his dogs. He was
smart as a whip to the last.

include his daughter and
son-in-law; Carla and John
Allen; two grandchildren,
fi ve great-grandchildren
and two great-great-
