Powder Valley’s Dominick Grende, shown during the Special District 3 playoffs, scored
a touchdown that briefly tied the score at 28-28 in the fourth quarter before Camas
Valley scored 20 straight points to earn a 48-36 win in the 1A quarterfinals Saturday.
The Powder Valley Bad-
gers rallied from a 16-point

their 1A quarterfinal game
Saturday afternoon against
Camas Valley, but the Hornets
responded with 20 straight
points and held on for a 48-36
win over the Badgers.

Hoops takes two in Boston
Observer staff
The Eastern Oregon University women’s
basketball team locked down Fisher College
after the first quarter Saturday in Boston on
its way to a 58-31 win over the Falcons.
Eastern held just a 19-13 lead after one
quarter, then held the Falcons to 18 points
on 7-for-40 shooting the rest of the way as it
built as much as a 29-point lead.
Beverly Slater posted a double-double —
scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds
— to lead the Mountaineers. Rachel Fielder
also scored 10 points, and both Jane Nelson
and Megan Still had nine as 10 players
scored in the win.
The Mountaineers won in spite of having
a cold afternoon from the floor, shooting just
29.6% (21-for-71) and 18.4% from 3-point
range (7-for-38), but held the Falcons to only
22.6% (12-for-53) and forced 18 turnovers.
The teams met again on Sunday, with
EOU against posting a second win, 62-47.

their lead back up to 20 be-
fore the Badgers scored late
for the final margin.
“They hit hard, they
scouted us well, (and) they
were a good ball club,” Bad-
gers’ head coach Josh Cobb
said. “I was super proud of
the guys. We only have three
seniors on the squad.”
Cobb added that he was
pleased the team didn’t give
in even when the outcome
was determined.
“We scored with a minute
and a half left to get it within
12. They never quit,” he said.
“They’re a scrappy bunch of
guys. Quit is not ever in their
mindset. Wish we could have
played another week.”
Even with the season
ending in the quarterfinals,
Cobb’s squad gained a wealth
of postseason experience
that will help a team that is
mainly underclassmen.
“We got a whole crew of
sophomores and freshmen
that play, and getting them
playoff experience and win-
ning a tight barn burner
game (against Lowell last
week) was huge,” he said.
The Badgers’ season ends
with a record of 7-4.
