our time to go home.”
Eastern (9-8-2) faces
Southern Oregon in the
semifi nals today. EOU was
originally slated to face
SOU in the fi rst round, but
the University of Providence
dropped out of the tourna-
ment due to internal issues,
which led to the reshuffl e
and the meeting with OIT.
A win by EOU and a win
by regular-season champion
Corban today would give
the Mountaineers the CCC’s
second automatic berth to
nationals.
EASTERN MEN LAND FIVE
ON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
The Eastern Oregon men’s
soccer team landed fi ve players
on the all-Cascade Collegiate
Conference squad, which was
announced Monday night.
Forward Javier Moran, the
Mountaineers’ leading scorer,
led EOU as a fi rst-team all-
CCC contributor. Moran had
six goals and three assists in
conference play, and seven
goals and four assists overall.
He was a key piece late in the
season for EOU, with three
goals and two assists during the
Mountaineers’ season-ending
fi ve-match winning streak.
Erik Mattice was a second-
team all-CCC honoree as
a defender, but also had an
important role on offense. The
junior scored three goals and
led Eastern with six assists. All
Mattice’s offensive contribu-
tions came during conference
play.
Three Mountaineers landed
on honorable mention — se-
nior Jack Rose, senior Jorge
Chavez and junior Calvin
Mitchell. Rose had two goals
and an assist, with both goals
coming in CCC play, and
started all but two matches for
a team that had four shutouts
on the season, including three
in its last fi ve regular-season
contests.
Chavez, a midfi elder and
defender, had a goal and two
assists during CCC play. Mitch-
ell, a midfi elder, added a goal
during CCC play, and had two
goals and two assists overall.
“Very happy to have guys
make all the levels (of awards),”
head coach Zach Mills said.
“Incredible to see those guys
get recognized even though we
had a wild season. Those boys
helped bring us back together
and get back on track.”

the EOU men after scoring six goals this season.
The Eastern Oregon wom-
en’s soccer team is one win
away from a third straight
trip to the Cascade Collegiate
Conference tournament
championship match.
Kaitlyn McLeod scored
what proved to be the winning
goal with about 24 minutes to
play, and the second-seeded
Mountaineers edged seventh-
seed Carroll College, 1-0, Tues-
day night in the quarterfinals
in Springfield.
“(The) ladies played very
well in the second half,”
head coach Jacob Plocher
said. “We had a lot of quality
chances. We were able to
capitalize and look forward
to playing Corban (in the
semifi nals). Savannah
(Hutchinson) had a great
game along with Cassidy
Quick and Cailin Koupal.”
Eastern had a sizable
shot advantage, with 22
shots overall, and 13 in
the second half, but was
unable to break through
until McLeod put home the
winning goal off a pass from
Koupal to lift EOU back to
the semifi nals.
The teams played
scoreless soccer for most
of the night, a contrast to
Eastern’s 2-0 win when

Jack Rose, shown earlier this season for EOU, hit what
proved to be the game-winning penalty kick Tuesday.

the teams met during the
regular season.
“They played a good
game. We had a few injuries
and it’s tournament soccer,”
Plocher said of why the re-
match was closer. “Anything
can happen.”
Three regular starters
missed Tuesday’s game, but
the Mountaineers’ depth on
the bench showed.
“We had a lot of girls step
up,” Plocher said.
Hutchinson had three
saves in net for EOU for the
shutout.
Sydney Green had eight
saves for Carroll.
The Mountaineers (13-2-2
overall) face eighth-seed
Corban today in the semifi -
nals. The upstart Warriors
upset top-seed Oregon Tech,
1-0, in the quarterfi nals.
“We get an opportunity to
have redemption from when
we tied Corban,” Plocher
said, referring to the teams’
2-2 draw in September.
