Whitney Meier converts a layup while being fouled
during EOU’s win over Simpson Saturday.
EOU
Continued from Page 7A
struggled from deep — and
a breakaway layup by
Slater to help keep Simpson
at bay. The Red Hawks did
get as close at 64-61 in the
fi nal minute before a Nel-
son layup and a pair of free
throws fi nished off the win.
“(In the) second half we
got tired and we made too
many turnovers,” EOU head
coach Anji Weissenfl uh said.
“Their pressure got to us,
and we didn’t play as confi -
dently as we did in the fi rst
half. We had some individual
decent performances, but
as a team we struggled to
shoot the ball tonight, (and)
we struggled to be strong
with the ball. Rebounding
was a positive. Bev (Slater)
stepped up on both ends, got
some rebounds (and) played
strong.”
EOU was just 5-for-27
from 3-point range, its
second straight off-game
from long range to open
the season. Nelson was the
exception, going 4-for-6.
“Her 3s were pretty clutch,
especially on a night when
others were struggling to
fi nd the hole,” Weissenfl uh
said. “Jane (Nelson) stepped
up when we needed her
(and) Whitney Meier stepped
up in the fi rst half and gave
us valuable minutes.”
Nelson said the confi -
dence instilled in the play-
ers by Weissenfl uh to keep
shooting was important
in her shooting effort, and
in being able to hit the big
triple late.
“She always tells us if
that’s your shot, even if you
haven’t been hitting it all
game, keep shooting,” Nel-
son said. “That’s what I love
about her. She always gives
us confi dence in our 3-point
shot even if we feel like it’s
not falling. I’m glad she
gives us the green light.”
Nelson also said she
doesn’t anticipate the cold
start from 3 this season to
continue.
“We have a lot of great
shooters. These last few
games we’ve been on a
roller coaster — they’ll fall
for a little while, and then
we won’t hit a lot. As the
season progresses and we
get our rhythm and fi gure
out how we’re supposed to
work together, they’ll start
falling more consistently.”
Emma Logan added 10
points and both Kylie Smith
and Meier added seven, and
all three had important bas-
kets in the third quarter to
fend off another Red Hawks
rally. EOU went 4:02 with-
out scoring to open the third
before Smith’s 3-pointer
gave it a 37-32 lead. Slater
hit a jumper, and then
subsequent 3-point plays
— one by Meier and one by

Logan — pushed the lead
to 45-37 with 3:56 to play in
the third quarter. EOU fol-
lowed with a 9-2 run to end
the third and take a 56-42
lead on a Nelson trey.
After its alumni game
and a scrimmage against
Umpqua Community Col-
lege next weekend, EOU
(2-0 overall) hosts George
Fox Nov. 2.
